Palmers Injury: Career Threatening

Holy crap! What a shock that's got to be. At first people thought he might be back by TC, but now it could be career threatening!
I really like Carson Palmer too, I hope he comes back from this because that would suck if he only gets to play 2 years when he is already a star...
CINCINNATI -- Carson Palmer's knee injury was "devastating and potentially career-ending," involving numerous ligament tears, a shredded ligament, damaged cartilage and a dislocated kneecap, his surgeon said Thursday.

The Cincinnati Bengals quarterback tore ligaments in his left knee when he was hit by Pittsburgh's Kimo von Oelhoffen on his first pass during the Steelers' 31-17 playoff victory Sunday.
The team announced that he had torn the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments. The damage was much more extensive and severe, but Dr. Lonnie Paulos said surgery went well and Palmer could be back for the start of the season.
Palmer had surgery Tuesday in Houston. Doctors used grafts from other parts of his body and donated tissue to fix the damage during an operation that lasted more than two hours. Palmer headed back to California on Thursday to do his rehabilitation.
"It's not just like it was a torn ACL," Paulos said Thursday, in a phone interview from Houston. "It's a magnitude more difficult to recover from and repair. It can and has ended careers, without a doubt.
"However, I feel very comfortable with Carson as an athlete and the heart that he's got. In the end, that's the bottom line. I can see the look in his eye already. He's ready to get going," he said.
Paulos, an orthopedic surgeon who has worked with the U.S. Ski Team since 1983, replaced the anterior cruciate ligament, which runs through the middle of the knee and provides stability. He said the medial collateral ligament, which runs along the side of the knee, was damaged "real bad."

Man that sucks for him and that Franchise.
With that Offense and young Defense they looked to be good for many years.
If he can't come back from this it will set the Bengals back a few years.

Wow. Very unfortunate.
It was kind of nice to see the Bengals finally rise from the depths of the NFL being led by Palmer. I wanted to see him reach the status of his 2003 #1 overall stature.
Hopefully he can recover. You never want to see a potential star's career end too early (Bo Jackson).

Reminds me of Pennington, a little. While it's two separate and distinct injuries, neither is easy to come back from...and either is easily recurred.
it's a shame. Not for the Bengals, for whom I couldn't care less. Palmer, though ? Man, he's just a guy that made it, finally. That's awful sad.

palmer's got heart and i believe he can come back and have a hall of fame career. im not saying that becasue i've always liked him as a qb, im saying that because i truly believe it. he has evrything you look for in a franchise qb, and the bengals were smart to take him and let him learn for a year and then let him grown into his role. he will be back, and when all is said and done, he'll be in the hall.

Can you not recognise spin when you see it Jake? An aspiring and savy sports journalist in the making?
For somebody close to the Washington DC region, you should know the term by heart. It is not only an art. It is perfected to a science.
We will know the truth next season. I am not optimistic. The MD simply opened his mouth too much and told the truth in my view. Somebody told him shut up now and correct it!
There is too much money at stake Jake. Come on man.

RiC is right. These types of injuries, when compounded by others, can be insurmountable.
Palmer is not really a scrambler, by most responsible measures...but the position he plays requires two serviceable knees.

Wow, Thats awful, Palmers a very good quarterback with a bright future ahead of him, you just hate to see this kinda thing happen to anyone, Good luck Carson, I hope he can come back from this

It sure didn't look that bad when it happened. Terrible situation. I feel so bad for the guy.

Yeah, I hope he gets back on the field. It would be a terrible way to end a promising career. Today on SC they mentioned that the doc. said good chance he'll be back on the field come Sept.

Its a shame this happened in his break out year. I tihnk he'll pull threw. I doubt he'll be ready for next season though. He'll have a lot of rust to shake off. Look how long its taken Lavar to come back.

The doctor said that by "career threatening" he meant ACL injuries in GENERAL and not specifically Palmers. He also said his words were taken the wrong way and that Palmer has a VERY GOOD chance at coming back for the 06 season.

... but there's a reason why they ARE typically career threatening. When you have so much knee damage, NOBODY can predict with any degree of certainty whether or not you will be able to ever return to playing. Because it isn't a question of how good a shape you were in, or how good a care you take of it, it's a question of hoping that the ligament heals properly as well.
But 'properly' doesn't just mean the strength, it also refers to the mobility. Unfortunately, injuries to the knee ligamnet are very difficult to bring along properly. If you allow a patient too much mobility during the rehab, then the ligament can grow back 'floppy' or 'loose'... too stretched... no longer as stable as it originally was.
On the flip side, if the ligament does not get enough mobility, it grows back too tight, thus restricting motion and stability. This is what makes an ACL injury so 'career-threatening'.
Palmer will get the best rehab money can buy, but not even that can GUARANTEE that he can come back from a 'Noble.' First step is surgery going well... which it did... but it will still be a loooong road back for Palmer... especially by training camp.

Palmer has one great thing going for him and that's youth. I think he'll rebound next season, but the Bungles would be wise to either hold on to Kitna or look to FA to find a very capable number 2.

I know after I busted both of my knees up I've always had a degree of discomfort. For a long time my knee would lock up and wouldnt bend. A lot of the time they pop when I bend them. Theyve been better.
I can definately run on them fine, they just act weird and get sore at times.

I agree Jake - I took it that way too! ALL these types of injuries are career threatening per se BUT the Dr felt that there was a very good chance he would be ready by training camp.
A little more over-reaction from our wonderful reporters.

The guy that rolled into him knew right away. I was watching the game. I thought there was going to be something negative going on downfield and that Palmer was regretting the throw, really. When I saw the Steeler react how he did, I knew.

Oh yeah...when that poor Steeler guy was so upset then I knew....I felt bad for him too.
