Should the Skins re-work Lavar?

I know his has been mentioned in other threads but I wanted to start a thread on this tpoic only. I'm personally on the fence about this topic, If he gives 110% I want him but I don't want a lazy do what ever I want Lavar. You don't know what your gonna get from him.

His re-sign-worthiness improves only if he agrees to re-work his deal and reduce that cap number for 2006.
If what's happening with the team this year doesn't cause him to re-think his objectives, nothing will.
EDIT: triggered by FFA's accurate recognition of a missing hyphen.

Re-sign.
The only person that can "resign" Lavar is Lavar.

Personally I think that the Redskins should resign him, if they can. There are 2 obsticales, one his cap hit and two the obvious hard feelings that now exist between the team and him. When he is in, he is a player that has game changing ability, last Saturday is a good example. Granted, the defense did very well without him last year but he has contributed much this year that has made the defense better.

Um, wouldn't "re-signing" him require that he not already be under contract? If you're asking whether the deal should be reworked to be more cap friendly, that's another question entirely but, as it stands, LaVar is signed. I can't imagine that the FO would decide "well, one way or another we take a cap hit and it's better to NOT have him and take the hit then it is to KEEP him and take the hit."
Further, methinks LaVar's attitude re the reworking of his deal has become more favorable given the playoff appearance. The further the Redskins go, the more his disposition toward a renegotiation improves.

Your right I really ment to say re-work his deal or get rid of him. Either way the Skins will be fine, GW will have another key to that lock tight defense if he is not with us next season.

The big question is do they pay him the $6 million roster bonus he is due according to his contract. My guess, and answer would be no. If he gives ups the bonus and wants to come back they may keep him. If he insists on getting that roster bonus they will release him.
I remember Gibbs saying earlier in the season that he has apent more time talking to Lavar than any other player he has ever coached. To me, that's a sign that Gibbs would cut him rather than pay him more money.

If I were GM I would handle it like this. Let Lavar's agent speak to other clubs with the thought that no one will offer him a deal nearly worth as much as the one he has.
Once we have those numbers, then offer to restructure his deal to reflect the value he would stand to get if released. Restructure in a way that reduces the cap hit.
If he refuses, then cut him. If he accepts keep him.
He would have less incentive to refuse because he would then know that he won't fetch much from other teams.

D'oh! Re-work is the proper term.
I'd like to see them take a unilateral approach to making this work.
If the Redskins extend the first sign of willingness then we'll see just where LA's head and/or heart truly lie.
(or just how much of his ear the Postons still have)

Now I draw the exact opposite conclusion from that. First, whether or not the Redskins cut LaVar, they take a cap hit. To take said hit and get NOTHING would be insane. Secondly, Coach Gibbs does not strike me as a man who wastes his time. He sees the potential in LaVar and is willing to put in the time with LaVar to witness the fruit of that potential.

Anyone got the numbers on that - the cap hit we'd take keeping Lavar, and the hit we'd take cutting him? I'd love to see those figures.

I would love to see what would happen if Lavar could be healthy for the entire offseason and participate in all of the OTA's workouts etc.
He wasn't there yet and he was behind, but I think if we can retain him and he participates along with Sean Taylor, then we will have an awesome defense, even better than it is now.

Ah, thanks for the linkage. So it looks like he costs us $12M or so to have on the team, but I'm not sure what he'd cost to cut - how much, if any, of his signing bonus would be accelerated if he were cut this offseason?
It'd be great to rework him, but they'll have to do something. $12M is just too much for a guy they only use on a part time basis. Of course, I'd love to see him in there on most plays.

If you search the site, somewhere in some thread BH addressed this very topic, he's more knowledgeable about it than anyone else.

I completely agree! Lavar has taken big hits in the national media and it was the media that caused such an uproar. Lavar has always been a Redskin and wants to remain a Redskin. GW was the first Defensive Coordinator that he has had for more then a single season and when Gregg came in Lavar was injured. Let Lavar keep playing big in the playoffs let the defense become even more synergistic. Lavar brings so much excitement and intensity to this alreayd intense defense. Remember in the San Fran game when they finally unleashed him? Remember how we cheered? He's been through so much with us and us with him, I don't want to see him go.

Fios - did you use that word "search"? That just isn't done here!
But back to a point that I think a couple of people made in earlier threads - the simple fact of the matter is not what we want or what the team wants - this all comes down to LaVar.
IF he wants to be on this team he knows what he has to do - it really is that simple.
this is not up to Snyder, or Gibbs or Williams or even Lindsey - this is up to LaVar.
Now we can opine on it and some still do not want him and some may, but Lavar will have to make that call.
LaVar Arrington

Can you tell me if LaVar Arrington will be a Redskin next year? I hope that the Raiders sign him.
What's his status for next year?

Our most recent discussion on this.
You can also do a search, and you should find what you are looking for.
Hope that helps.

Al Davis loves old players, leaving their prime or allready out of their prime.

I can live with knowing that he may not be here next year.
I keep waiting for the big play. That interception was nice, but for all the hype...

The boy looked a bit cumbersome when he was running. I think he still has some healing to do.

If I were Lavar's agent, here is what I would have been doing or start doing right now:
Lavar is the face of the franchise, so I would have already or start to get him endorsement deals and other off-the-field opportunities in this area and nationally to compensate for the restructuring of his contract. He is still very marketable and can still play at a high level. I'd speak to the marketing team that put Ray Lewis back out there after his off the field issues in Atlanta. I'd also push Lavar in the commentating and analysis direction as well. Something that he can do after his playing days but still remain in Football..
Bascially set Lavar up with other avenues of income that will compensate for the loss in salary that he is "willing" to take to remain a Redskin.
I'd also test the waters out there to see what he would get from other teams, just to gauge what I am looking at from a marketing standpoint in terms of earnings in endorsements and other areas, to make up for the gap in restructuring his contract or what other teams would offer.
And ultimately, have a plan B in case all of this does not work out and look to move him elsewhere. But it would be all up to Lavar and his financial comfort level for his family and their futures.
