Keeping GW

I'm sure many of you read the Post's article today about Gregg Williams likely being a hot coaching candidate this year. The one thing I thought the article failed to mention was the single best way the Redskins can minimize the chances of him leaving: Going deep into the playoffs.

Because assistants under contract can't interview for head coaching positions until the season is over (except for a one week grace period before the Super Bowl) and many coaching vacancies are filled before the Super Bowl, it makes it tough for a coordinator on a successful team to leave.

This kept Charlie Weiss and Romeo Crenell from leaving New England for a couple of years. The longer the Redskins are in it, the fewer coaching vacancies will remain, and the more likely it will be that GW returns next year.

interesting, never thought of that.

I think he will stay no matter what happens. His family loves the area, and I heard that they already promised him the head coaching job after Joe leaves.

I wouldn't be surprised if Snyder makes Williams not just the highest paid assistant in the league but maybe one of the highest paid coaches, period.

I think that the pnly way he leaves is if he gets the KC head coaching job. Williams has family in KC and it would be a perfect situation for him because they already have one of the best offenses in the league so he would just need to improve the defense to make the Chiefs a legitimate contender. Hopefully Vermeil sticks around so that we don't have to worry about losing Williams.

I stayed after the game two hours to get autographs and talk to the players and whatnot. One of the last people to come out of the tunnel was GW. We called him over and I started talking to him about not leaving. I said you can't leave, "You know your kids love it here." He said, "You must have been talking to my wife." He continued to say that he wasn't leaving. Now obviously I know he wouldn't have said no pretty much, i plan on leaving at the end of the season, but he did seem very sincere. I got him, Robert Royal, and Marcus, and Samuels to sign my favorite Redskins hat, which now in turn needs to be retired. I really think GW will be stasying for more reasons than one.

Joe would never want to hold a guy back from furthering his career.
If he stays, it has to be because he really wants to, not because he doen't think he could pry Blache from the team or some similar deal.
I agree that if the KC job comes up, and they like him, he'll go. Everybody wants to go home and win for their hometown.
