What did Gibbs see in Cooley?

I think the whole Chris Cooley story is a tribute to Joe Gibbs and how he chooses players for his system. I mean, didn't we trade up to get him? I never really heard much out of him before the draft, and I wonder if any other teams, if any, even had him on there radar. A lot of people look at him as a TE, but he's not, so what other team would even want this type of player on their team? Yet, he's a playmaker in a Joe Gibbs offense. How would Cooley do in someone elses offense? It's a tribute to Joe Gibbs how he was able to sniff Cooley out and quietly trade up to get him, having the foresight of how he was going to use him in his offense. I mean seriously, this guy catches everything that's thrown to him, he's sometimes so wide open he could sit down and wait for the ball to come, and yet no one can really stop him even though they know darn well that Gibbs is going to him inside the 10 yard line.

What a great story this Chris Cooley kid is, but even better, is the fact that Gibbs had the intuition to go out and get him. Does anyone remember if he was highly touted pre-draft or not? I'm not too familiar with what he dit at Utah St., but he certainly didn't make the front page of any major sporting publications. I actually think he deserved to be a Pro Bowl starter as opposed to what, a second alternate?

His senior season, he led the NCAA in catches and yards by a TE, yet he was listed WAY down the list of Tight Ends on all the draft boards.

Didn't Cooley have been yards/stats that KW2 coming out of college? That may have been one reason to raise an eyebrow or two.

Yes, I was/am/always will be a Cooley fan!

I remember his stats being better than Winslow's out of college, buy Cooley came from a smaller school so no one really cared, except us I guess.

Well i live in mormon country UTAH, and let me say Cooley was a BEAST. I dont really watch Utah state as much as say the Utes, but i remember he led the nation in catches and yards his senior season coming out of college. I think teams had him pegged as a 3rd/4th rounder, hence The trade up to snag him. But as far as you question as to WHAT joe saw in him..... thats simple. Joe Saw....

 CAPTAIN CHAOS

Character, heart, playmaking, dedication, hands? He saw a Redskin, somebody who reminded him of Warren, Grimm, Monk, Bostic and Jacoby.

I hope Cooley stays a Redskin for life.

He wasn't from the U. so nobody saw any value in him except Gibbs. He lead the nation in catches and yards but that didn't catch anybody's eye except Gibbs.

Gibbs is good at that and maybe this coming draft he can find that diamond in the rough #2 receiver. There a lot of good WRs that come out HBCU's that don't get the chance. We all have seen that a big school does not make a good WR (i.e. Taylor Jacobs (Florida); Peter Warrick (Fla. State); Peerless Price (Tenn.); Kellye Washington (Tenn.), etc.)....

I like the guy but everytime he runs with the ball I hold my breath... it could pop out at any moment.

The guy has 3 fumbles in almost 2 full years, only one of which was lost, and he puts that fear into you?

The fumbling issue with Cooley was alarming because it cropped out of nowhere and happened often for a short span. That shows just how much faith and trust we had in the guy. He's no a fumbler and an injury could have contributed to his fumbles.

I think Gibbs saw perfection in the Hback system. He saw a large target, reliability, soft hands, intelligence, speed, agility, aggression, and passion.

i remember after the draft reading one of those "scouting report" thingies on cooley, and they were saying he would basically be OK but never special, never be much of a playmaker. HA!

Who was that TE that got drafted this year that was supposed to be all that? That cat could catch the ball upside down with his pinkie in college but dissapeared when he got in the NFL. Wasn't his name Matt? He used to be a QB?

My Giants-fan friend(?) says Cooley had his last 3 TDs of the year. I will be sitting next to him tomorrow and can't wait to do an "in your face" when Captain Chaos proves him wrong

Heath Miller, formerly of UVA, now with the Stillers?? He was doing alright at the beginning of the season, I think.

Cooly is a Te and can play well in any offense, not just Gibbs, he can block, recieve, and make plays. To say how would he do in any other offense sounds a little silly. They would just put him at Te and he would be the same player. I think the reason he wasn't a first round pick is he came from a small school.

Obviously you don't follow the Steelers, he is playing pretty well.

cooley was an all-state wrestler i think, and those wrestling guys are freakish athletes. we just had our Pack the Pit wrestling night at my high school and i'll tell you what, those guys are nothing short of amazing athletes. for being that big and strong, they are so agile and nubile, its almost impossible to match up against on a football field.

I think Joe was gunning for a TE to make a hybrid out of, and came away from the KW2 interview thinking that this guy was just no gonna fit.
What a great move.
