Dungy's son, 18, found dead in Tampa suburb
ESPN.com news services
James Dungy, the 18-year-old son of Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy, was found dead at 1:30 a.m. ET Thursday in his apartment in Lutz, Fla., a suburb of Tampa, Debbie Carter, a spokesperson for the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, confirmed Thursday.

In a news release on its Web site, the Hillsborough County Sheriffs Office said it "responded to the Campus Lodge Apartments this morning at approximately 1:32 a.m. The girlfriend of James Dungy had returned to the apartment and discovered Dungy."

Police performed CPR on Dungy before he was taken to University Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The cause of death is pending an autopsy by the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner's Office.

Tony Dungy has left the Colts and is in Tampa, ESPN has learned.

The coach and his wife, Lauren, have four other children: daughters Tiara and Jade and sons Eric and Jordan.

The Colts (13-1) are at Seattle on Saturday.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

KFFL is reporting that Dungy is taking an indefinite leave to tend to things. Bill Caldwell will take over in his absence. I wonder if this will have a "Wellington Mara" effect on the Colts this weekend, or if they will come out flat and distracted.

As we fill our faces with food and drink this Christmas, and get worked up over a football game, this is a horrible yet timely reminder of the fact that there really are more important things in life.

I've always felt that Tony Dungy is one of the good men in football, and my heart goes out to him and his family.

AMEN to that my friend. Terrible news on a very difficult time. As I heard once: when you lose your parents, you become an orphan; there isn't a word in the dictionary to describe when you lose a son.

I know how it feels to lose a family member at Christmas, no amount of time lessens the pain.

I dont know if its been reported but there is a rumour it was a suicide.

There's no way to explain the pain he's going through right now, folks. Actually, at this point, he's most likely busied with making the arrangements...which is a very short-lived distraction.
No parent should outlive their child.

My thoughts and prayers will be for the Dungy family. Tony always struck me as being one of the men that truly live his faith, and I'm sure it will sustain him, but no matter how strong the faith, the death of a child is a pain that does not ever truly heal. I hope that they are able to find some peace in the coming days.

Kinda puts football, even possible playoffs, in perspective, doesn't it.
