Gibbs stepping down ??

File this away dept.: There is some talk in the NASCAR circles that Redskins coach Joe Gibbs is ready to walk away from the NFL and go back to running his racing teams. The word is Gibbs is not having nearly as much fun coaching as he once did. If he leaves, look for Redskins defensive coordinator Gregg Williams to likely take over. Williams deserves another chance after his three-year run in Buffalo didn't end the way he wanted. He's a good coach who is as detailed and organized as any in the game.

This is crap. There was an article within the past 2 weeks where he definately confirmed he's coming back next year.

I think Larry Michael said that he heard Gibbs say over and over that he will coach out his contract. Since we are going to the playoffs as either the Division Champ or Wildcard...he'll be back.

I don't think he will but it would not surprise me if he did. The NFL is a totally different animal then the last time he coached. I think he is ajusting well and the players are buying in...I would hope that he wouldn't leave what he has started.

Seems like it's time to add a little spice to our day "let's bring up the old Gibbs' rumor"!!
Next week it'll be something about how the Redskins have little chance because of the "record" for the past 20 years against the pukes teams.
When are these people going to learn that stats are things that should be restricted to use by baseball or political idiots. They mean nothing! It's just the media types who bring up rumor and innuendo to sell and hype their storylines.

This very true in the fact that when Gibbs steps down the head coaching job will go to Williams. I know they made a verbal agreement when they hired williams. Gibbs will probably stay one more year if we don't make the playoffs or until we do.

i think for the moment it,s a rumor and a rumor only
but its something to keep in the back of your minds down the road and like i said if he,s a man of his word he will honor his deal for 5 years but if it were to happen i wouldn,t be suprised.for now it,s just a rumor trying to start something that has no merit at all.

Judging how other coaches have historically taken 3 years to turn a franchis around, bring in the players they want at each position....I can't see a healthy Joe Gibbs leaving us.
Especially if we make the playoffs or win the division. Gibbs will return.. The only way he leaves early is if we win a Superbowl. At that point, there is nothing else for him to accomplish.

you pretty much covered it when you said the media is trying to put their own story together and then create a rumor.
joe gibbs will have this ship sailing before too long.and i,m sticking with him no matter what cause he,s been here thru the good times and knows whats required to get them back there as well.

Point taken but did Gibbs make a promise that he wasn't going to leave before the end of his contract. Gibbs would only step down if he ran into a Martz situation. If he has a clean bill of health he's here for the duration and I wouldn't be shocked if he stayed longer.

I hope Williams doesn't find a head coaching job elsewhere. I hope he can wait around until Gibbs decides to step down.

Joe Gibbs is also 65 years old. Is it really so ridiculous that he feals he doesn't have it what it takes physically to coach an NFL team?
Again, I'm not saying the story is true. I'm just pointing out that Joe Gibbs is human, and that an early exit is possible (regardless of how likely).

I dont think TC or anyone else expect or believe Gibbs will work thru health complications at his age. I believe that he was reffering to Gibbs giving up and quitting on the team out of frustration or because of losing.

The only thing that would make him step down is his health. He is seventy something. I hope he stays healthy and all.

He's about 64. He's a better coach every week. His health is better than it was in '92 -- two steady months of migraines and insomnia to finish the season. He has a more accomodating owner: even though Snyder has made wacko decisions, remember that Jack Kent Cooke was one of the most difficult owners ever.

Good point but I think with a difficult owner like cooke I believe it brought out the best in Gibbs. Three out of Four superbowls is simply fabulous. They must have been doing something right dont you agree.
