Brunell: Keep him or ditch him?

As you all know Matt Leinhart will soon be entering the draft out of USC. You wanna know what I think? I think we should release Brunell and sign on Leinhart. That or wait till Brady Quinn comes out of Notre Dame. Brunell is good dont get me wrong, but now that we have one of the best coaches [in my opinion] in the NFL, we should maybe work on our Quarterback. But hey we are getting a helluva alot better kniw that we got rid of spurrier. I hate him just as much as the ravens.

We aren't in the running for the Leinhart lottery. That is to say, the top three picks in the draft may just well be Bush, Leinhart and Young (in whatever order), and we won't have a top three pick. And, even if we did some how manage to lose more games than we mathematically can in order to have the third-worst record, we don't get our first round pick next year because it was traded to Denver.

Brunell will cost us $5 million next year if he is here or not (maybe he can help develope JC) My 2 cents

What is Matt going to do to make him drop from the top pick OUT OF THE FIRST RD. :hmm:

The Redskins have NO SHOT at Leinart.

Unless they overpay on another unwise draft-day deal.

Brunell is doing fine... keep him ... trade Ramsey and get Campbell in the mix next pre-season. We need an extra 2nd or 3rd rounder since we don't have a first so trade Ramsey instead.

why don't we just sign Peyton Manning? And then sign Eli to back him up. Oh, and let's get Julius Peppers too!

First, welcome to the board. I think you'll like it here, it's a great place to be. The staff really work hard to make this place a good one for Redskins fans.

Now, having said that, there's simply no way we get either Leinhart or Quinn. In the first place, Joe already has Jason Campbell, who he perceives as being his QB of the future. He must've seen something in him, otherwise how do you explain the trade that was made in order to be in position to draft him? Second, we have NO chance to take Leinhart this year, he's projected right now to go either first or second in the first round of the draft, according to everything that I've read. That means that Houston, San Francisco, etc., will have a shot at him. I can't honestly see him lasting through the first round. Our first round pick belongs to Denver, so we are definitely out of the running for him, or Reggie Bush, for that matter.

Honestly, I think that what we need to work on during the offseason (after we go to the playoffs!) on the OFFENSIVE side of the ball, is the O-line. I'll admit that when Joe pulled Ramsey and put Brunell in, I thought "here we go again", but I was pleasantly surprised with the way Brunell played. He showed me a heck of a lot more than he did last season, which is why I'm glad it's Joe Gibbs, not me, that's coaching. Brunell, when given time and a little bit of protection, has shown that he still has the ability to pick apart a defense. I mean, how many interceptions has he thrown? Not that many, and of those, I think roughly half were caused by mistakes on the receiver's part. Also, when the O-line does its job, the running game, be it up the gut or on the outside, really can crank it out. But of late, there's been little protection, and few holes made. So the O-line needs to be addressed.

On the DEFENSIVE side of the ball, we desperately need someone that can get some pressure on opposing QB's. But in fairness, we've got largely the same personell as last season, but we've also had a lot of injuries on the defense, which is something that was limited last season.

So I think we can put any talk of Leinhart or Quinn to bed, and focus on some of the actual areas where it is realistic to look for improvement.

But you did hit nail one other point, and that is that we are a much better team, and a much better coached team, now that Spurrier has gone.

Next year is his contract year... He extended last year or the year before to save cap space last year

No way would Gibbs ditch Brunell before next season. He doesn't know what he's got with Campbell yet, and it's obvious that he doesn't have faith in Ramsey. He knows what he can get out of Brunell, and he'll keep him around as long as it takes for Campbell to develop.

Leinhart just isn't on the radar, but I can certainly see Gibbs taking a QB in the lower rounds of the draft next year, if he thinks Campbell is ready to move up to #2 or even start.

I don't suppose Denver would be willing to give us our first round pick back in exchange for Ramsey? Of course not, but I wonder what sort of offer we could get in a trade for him? If I could have my way, then they'd trade him for a lineman, on either side of the ball. Sure, defensive end is the biggest need, but I wouldn't be upset if they traded him for a nasty guard to replace Dockery - he looks like a lifetime underachiever to me.

I don't think Leinhart is that great, with the team around him im sure that i could go at least 9-2 with USC. Wouldn't surprise me if he's the 3rd QB takin in the draft behind, Vince Young,Texas and Jay Cutler, Vanderbilt.

I think that Campbell will start next year depending on how the rest of the season goes for Mark... If we make a run, we may stick Mark in there next year to see if he can keep his momentum, if he struggles the rest of the year I think you will definatly see Jason in there...

I agree that Leinart is slightly overrated but no way he is going to be the 3rd qb drafted. I mean it's almost a 100% certainty that he is going to be drafted in the top 3. As for Young, he said earlier that he's coming back to Texas and I don't think that anything has changed for him. And when he does come out, from the reports I've seen, he'll likely come out as a WR. He is a great college qb, but he doesn't have the throwing ability to be a qb in the NFL. During the Rose Bowl take a look at his throwing motion.
