Why Cowboys on Thanksgiving?

Ok, so I'm an ignorant limey. So somebody please tell me why the Cowboys and Lions always play on Thanksgiving?

You might be able to make an argument that the Cowboys mean good ratings, but the Lions?! Seems like a curious tradition to me. Wouldn't it make more sense to schedule the reigning Superbowl champs for every Thanksgiving?

Just curious. :?

I actually asked this in the Football 101 forum. Check out the replies.

No "Whoops" necessary! I had trouble deciding where to post the question: here or in Football 101.
