John Wayne was known for many classic Western movies. Some of my favourites are The Stagecoach and True Grit. But the best movie I remember of him is one whose name I do not remember. I am trying to find it on DVD to purchase it as a gift. My questionn is:

What was the name of the only John Wayne movie in which he plays a college football coach in a hopeless catholic college, as a single parent of a young football-addicted daughter, brings the football program around and gets the girl/social worker in the end?

It is a black and white movie that I saw many years ago on tv. I have tried several searches without success.

These two films were bit parts for the Duke.

The Forward Pass - 1929
Maker of Men - 1931

The one you want is:

Trouble Along the Way
1953 - Warner Brothers

Main Cast: John Wayne, Donna Reed, Charles Coburn, Sherry Jackson, Tom Tully. Directed by Michael Curtiz.
Usually underrated, this picture portrays Duke as a single father and has-been football coach, who gets another chance at a poor Catholic college with a very bad football team. Duke lives with his daughter at the college, and falls in love with a social worker (Reed) worried about the child's welfare. To make the football team a winner, Duke must pull a few fast tricks, which end up getting himself and the college into hot water.

A line spoken by Duke in the picture, "Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing," was later associated with football legend Vince Lombardi.

Thanks. I love this site! It had taken me YEARS to identify this movie. I still remember Donna Reed. Gorgeus!

Youare right about the quote in the film attributed later to Vince Lombardi.

I thought Welch would be the one getting this one. Thanks NC!

By the way, I recommend the movie wholeheartedly!
