Current & former military

Talk about the AFC, NFC, the NFL Draft, College Football... anything football that has no Washington Football Team relevance.

Current & former military

Post by joebagadonuts »

did it bother any of you that abc used members of the military for its 'are you ready for some football?' thing prior to the steelers-chargers kickoff last night? as a civilian, i'm just curious what your thoughts are.

(i thought it was in extremely poor taste, but that seems to be the way abc works these days).

I missed it. How did they use them?

as they sometimes do, they had several members of the military out on the field before the introductions, and had a helicopter flyby. one soldier stepped forward out of the formation and in his best drill sergeant voice shouted 'are you ready for some football!?!?', at which point the chargers came streaming out of the tunnel, and abc kicked into its gmc commercial-er, i mean hank williams' opening number.

i guess it doesn't seem so offensive as i'm typing it, but i just remember being appalled last night at the lengths abc will go to to get ratings (and i'm not even military).

I guess I would have had to see it to know whether it was offense or not. I have to admit I typically skip the first 20 minutes of the show in order to miss all of the self-promoting garbage that they bombard people with unless the Redskins are playing.

I've been active duty and now am a reservist. Really didn't think anything offensive by it -- the military loves football!!!

If anything, I see it as a boost to the armed services whose recruiting goals are seriously behind.

I think you can find offense in just about anything if you really want to. I have been to so many Yankee games where they have the Blue Angels drop down to the grass with parachutes...even saw a couple of awkward landings that know were gonna hurt the next day.
It's good for everybody to see the military enjoying themselves, and taking a break from the war. I'm sure it helps with recruiting too.

it wasn't the fact that the military was there or that they participated in the pregame stuff. i actually think it serves as a great reminder of the freedoms we enjoy (such as a enjoying a ballgame) and the people who are fighting and have fought for those freedoms.

i guess i was just struck by abc's willingness to use the military for their own promotion. but i guess i don't really have any right to complain, not being military myself. i was just curious to see what others thought.

chill. excuse me for having enough respect for the group of people who are willing to sacrifice their lives to protect this country that i would be offended by abc using them for it's own promotion.

Gotta remember that there's a Navy base in San Diego, as well as a Marine Corp Camp there, and nothing would have been possible without military approval. As a vet, I personally didn't find it offensive.

From my personal experiences, I find that people without a military background are much more easily offended by this type of thing.

It's not that there is anything wrong with this difference, only that there is a different perspective.

I think that is all Mr. ofdonuts was asking. No need to insult him for it.

Im former military, and I think the opposite. Most people don't care about stuff like that, or when some guy calls himself a 'soilder'...more civilians make a huge deal about it than anything, in my opinion
