Question, Need Help.

I need to settle a dispute... need help ASAP. A friend of mine was screaming at me that the NFL has a rule that states that your "2nd" string QB must come in before your "3rd" string. i was always under the impression that the terms 2nd and 3rd were strictly for lockerroom purposes. how can the league tell a coach who he can play and when? for example. the eagle fan friend of mine swears that if Mcnabb were to get in in the middle of a game that reid would have to bring in detmer for a play and then bring in mcmahon who he thinks is better than detmer. he say that detmer is the second string because he holds and that detmer would have to play at least a down to allow mcmahon to come in. He said the league states that they eagles couldnt skip down their depth chart for the QB. follow all that? niether did I and it got pretty heated because he sounds pretty stupid. can someone clarify this and possibly point to a source so i can tell this eagle fan to shove it.
thanks!

Here is the substitution Rules according to NFL.com
Digest of Rules
Players-Substitutions
1. Each team is permitted 11 men on the field at the snap.
2. Unlimited substitution is permitted. However, players may enter the field only when the ball is dead. Players who have been substituted for are not permitted to linger on the field. Such lingering will be interpreted as unsportsmanlike conduct.
3. Players leaving the game must be out of bounds on their own side, clearing the field between the end lines, before a snap or free kick. If player crosses end line leaving field, it is delay of game (five-yard penalty).
4. Offensive substitutes who remain in the game must move onto the field as far as the inside of the field numerals before moving to a wide position.
5. With the exception of the last two minutes of either half, the offensive team, while in the process of substitution or simulated substitution, is prohibited from rushing quickly to the line and snapping the ball with the obvious attempt to cause a defensive foul; i.e., too many men on the field.
Don't see anything regarding "strings". Maybe your friend was thinking of his tampon substitution rules.

I just found that... Thanks! What a flipping moron this eagle fan is... we were at lunch and everyone (who are all eagle fans) were looking at him like he had 3 heads.
Thanks again! What a stupid arguement!

More than likely, what he is thinking about, is that the third qb is usually inactive and listed as an emergency third QB, which can only be put in when the two active QB's are unable to play.

If he is an Eagle fan, please do not waste your time. They are hopeless.

The 3rd Qb can be put in the game at any time.
By playing the thrid QB before the 4th Qtr. you team is not allowed to play the 1st or 2nd stringers for the remainder of the game.
As of 1995 the emergency (third) quarterback may enter the game in just the fourth quarter, regardless if the other two quarterbacks are able to play. This means that if the third string quarterback enters the game, the first and/or second quarterback may re-enter, before then the 4th qrt was just like 1 - 3 if he plays the others can't.

great explanation... so the second string QB couldnt even come back in to hold then?

Truthfuly, I do not. And I will tell you why:
1) The treatment that he received here was at least cordial if not friendly. In contrast, ANY poster from this site that visited Concrete Field was received with insults and criticism. While the rivalries are profound, some measure of civility (read some decency) should be encouraged by the Webmasters the way BossHog does here both when we go elsewhere and when other fans come to our site. Have you ever seen the treatment given to Jake and others that have ventured into that swamp?
2) Philthy fans are filthy. While not all of them are the same, some are filthier than others. There is no such thing as sportsmanship and ethics in their demeanor or vocabulary. They are a curse to the NFL.
3) GF simply ran away as a result of the rise of theSkins and the downturn of his team. Nice to brag when times are good, a different story when the positions are switched.
4) For all the reasonig and documented evidence provided to him, his prejudices are what they are. Remember the story about The Frog and The Scorpion that I told you once? He is a Philthy fan. There is no cure for permanent brain damage and several personality disorders.
Truly, I have no time for the worst fans in the NFL. Give me EVEN Pukes fans better than Philthy fans. That is how low they are in my book. Everybody has a first-hand nightmare story to tell about them.
No, I do not miss that or any other filthy fans. It is impossible to reason with them.
So, here you have it: I have put in writing what you really knew all along I was going to write. Let's wait and see.

Oh, stop. I'm gonna put this in Smack, and not because I need to swear at you. It's off-topic, for one...
...and I completely disagree with you, which could lead to you swearing at me in French. Sacre Bleu !

What part of my response did I not make clear? You made a statement:

and I said -no-. Clear enough now?
Obviously GF is missed by somebody else instead...
