DENVER (AP) -- Timmy Smith, who set a Super Bowl rushing record when he played for the Washington Redskins in 1988, has been arrested after allegedly trying to sell cocaine to an undercover drug agent.

Smith, 41, of Denver and his brother, Chris, of suburban Lakewood, were both charged with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute more than 500 grams of cocaine, U.S. attorney's spokesman Jeff Dorschner said Friday.

If convicted, each faces 10 years to life in prison and a fine of up to $4 million.

Authorities said the investigation has resulted in the seizure of about 2.8 pounds of cocaine and unspecified assets worth about $100,000. Search warrants were executed on houses in Denver and Lakewood, authorities said.

Smith rushed for a Super Bowl-record 204 yards and two touchdowns in the Redskins' 42-10 victory over the Denver Broncos in 1988. He gained weight the following season and never performed at the same level. He last played in the NFL in 1990 with the Dallas Cowboys.

He worked this summer as a youth counselor and participated in several youth football camps, authorities said.

He was in custody and had not yet been appointed an attorney, Dorschner said.

From what I understand most of these Youth Counselors sell drugs in their spare time.

Gibbs knew this would happen. That's why he didn't come back after the Super Bowl. Gibbs only wanted character guys on his team in 1988.

Of course they would. He won Super Bowl 22 for us. Not even half of the Skins fans know he played for another team... or even know who he is for that matter.

An unfortunate turn of events for a former Super Bowl hero.

unfortunate?

Super Bowl hero or not... I'm glad cocaine users are being caught and punished.

He and his brother had a BUNCH of coke, and were planning to sell it! I hope the book gets thrown at them!

Ummm I'm pretty sure more than half of Redskins fans know who Timmy Smith is.

Give your fellow man a little credit.

Timmy had a great game against Denver in the SB and Skins fans will always remember him for that.

But a lot of Skins fans didn't know or don't remember that he finnished is career with that team in Texas.

I'll agree with you there niksder. I just found that comment about half of Redskins fans not knowing who Timmy Smith was to be way off base.
