Brunell Jersey Typo

The strangest scenario, however, has involved Redskins quarterback Mark Brunell. As readers Sam Bell and Todd Carroll alertly point out, Brunell had "Redskin" -- instead of the plural "Redskins" -- printed on his jersey and on his rear helmet liner during the team's Week 1 game against the Bears.

Now, one typo might be an honest mistake. But it doesn't take a conspiracy theorist to conclude that two matching typos are evidence of more than just an innocent coincidence. Was Brunell making some sort of statement? Is he not a team player? Does he consider himself to be a big chief among little Indians? Or did he just have trouble distinguishing singulars from plurals in grammar school?

These and other questions hung in the balance when the 'Skins played the Cowboys this past Monday night, with Uni Watch vigilantly perched mere inches from the TV screen in order to get a good view of the fine print on Brunell's togs. And sure enough, he still had "Redskin" on his jersey -- but his helmet liner had been updated to include the "s" in "Redskins." With the situation getting curiouser and curiouser, a thoroughly confused Uni Watch put in a call to Redskins HQ, where the team's entire PR staff immediately stopped what they were doing and began investigating this crucial mystery.

OK, not really. But 'Skins PR rep Brian Hosmer did check with the team's equipment manager. "He says there's no significance to it at all," Hosmer reported back. "They just didn't catch it." Yeah, but how did the helmet liner change? "Uh, I don't know. He, uh, didn't mention it." Sigh. And did anyone ask Brunell about it? "No, he's been in meetings all day and I can't really bother him with something like this."
It was at this point that Uni Watch got the distinct impression that Hosmer was looking at his watch with that "really busy, gotta go" look on his face, so that was pretty much the end of the conversation. And a maddeningly unsatisfying conversation it was -- we don't know anything more about this situation than we did before, except that the equipment manager probably won't let it happen again. But Uni Watch isn't ready to let go of this one. If anyone has any insights, please speak up.

Three other quick notes about the 'Skins: First, perhaps in reaction to Uni Watch's recent critique, they've stopped wearing burgundy socks with their burgundy pants (which created an unsightly leotard effect) and have gone back to wearing their striped white socks -- a great improvement. Second, Joe Gibbs appears to have abandoned the black cap he wore last season in favor of a red cap, more like the one he wore in his glory days (although the newer version, annoyingly, has the Reebok logo).

And finally, the color scheme of Gibbs' Monday night attire prompted Uni Watch attaché Ruth Wedes to opine, "He looks like he's working at McDonald's." All game long, whenever Gibbs appeared on the screen, Wedes quipped, "Would you like fries with that?" and "Super-size it?" But of course Uni Watch was too busy scrutinizing Brunell's jersey and helmet to engage in such frivolities.

I had no idea....I really didn't pay much attention, did any of you see this?

This is dumb......Who cares? What! is Brunnell supposed to be an english major now or something? I could care less what he has on his jersey when he's throwing 40 and 70 yard bombs to Moss.

Cut the man some slack, you have to see the picture evidence of this ocurrence.

For those who read "Uni Watch" on ESPN's Page 2, it's good to finally see some Skins coverage.
(It means someone is actually paying attention to us.) If interested, you can read the article by clicking here. It also includes some stuff on Joe Gibbs.

First, here's Mark with only "Redskin" on his jersey an helmet liner:

Here he is on Monday night, with the jersey reading the same, and the helmet liner fixed:

Could it be Mark's doing? Is Joe sending a subliminal message to remind us that Brunell is here for the long haul???? Read the article to get a chuckle.

I dunno....I kind of find it hard to believe that either of these errors could happen in today's game. But even twice? I mean, how could an S be left off - I assume this is a standard thing to have the entire teams name on all the patches, stickers, etc. I have to presume that this is not a coincidence.

Gay. Why is this guy so obsessed over uniforms?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but players don't stich their own jerseys. do they?

And if it were his own doing (which I highly doubt) wouldn't Ramsey have done it too, since you know they are supposedly like Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn.

I've heard of watching the game, but that is REALLY watching the game...scary almost.

Oh...and I like the burgundy socks much, much better than the white socks....it makes the team look alot faster, but Ive digressed. We all know that the all white unis are the best anyways --heck Moss looks fast anyway.

Well, it might be the rebel within Brunell. Last year, Sean, Lavar, and Portis "stood out" by abusing adhevise tape and sock colors. Brunell, that wily vet, decided to be an individual on a less conspicuous level.

Maybe it was his way of "stickin'it" to Huck Finn.

That Brunell... always a kidder.

I certainly hope that the "writer" of that "column" is not getting paid for his services. There is no such word as "curiouser." I think he needs to worry more about how he spells than about what is stitched on a jersey.

I dunno, I like the striped socks. After I read that article I was watching an NFL films show about the '92 playoffs and when I saw the 'Skins the first thing that struck me was that our unis are exactly the same now as they were then. I thought that was really cool, not like other teams who have switched to horrible uniforms like Arizona and Seattle. It shows continuity and pride. I also like how Joe has switched to the burgundy cap with the gold "R" just like he used to wear. I don't know why but I like it, its almost like we're moving back to those glory days or something.

Besides, the burgundy socks were cool the first time without the white socks but with the white socks they look like capri pants. That is seriously uncool, we don't want to look like LPGA golfers or French male tennis players. The striped socks are the only way to go.

Maybe he IS onto something, after all. :-k

From the Ravens Pre-season game:

Maybe Marky Mark isn't the team player I thought he was, as the "S" is missing in the above picture, as well.

Though he CLEARLY deserves it!!

Of course, this now means that I'll have to alter my replica jersey to properly match the authentic. :D

See what I mean. Also, notice that we've been wearing the burgundy socks with the road uni for a long time too.

Instead of thinking that Brunnell was involved in a conspiracy every week, maybe he just wears the same Jersey.

I don't know...just don't see how changing the S makes any real statement...either you are saying
"I play for the Redskins" or "I am a Redskin" either meaning you attach is good IMO, and now that I think about it, saying "I am a Redskin" seems stronger...but hey, this is the type of crap we talk about when there is no game coming up.

We should have an official scouting Seattle thread this Sunday, for those of us with the Sunday Ticket, or the west coast guys who get the game.

I was talking about the writer of the article.

He is like Queer Eye for football teams.

Funnily enough, I read your post just in time to flip on a show about LT on ESPN Classic. No more than 5 minutes later did they show the play. Yes, Theisman was wearing the striped socks.
