John Madden's comments.

Ok so last night Scott and I got some bad family news. I figured what would make us cheer up better then rewatching the spectacular ending to the game Monday night. While watching I noticed something HUGE!

We will never get this credit but the comment in my eyes shows what a hypocritical jerk Madden is because he'll never back it.

During the drive of the second touchdown, right before Brunnell throws the second bomb that was right on, Madden says and this is a loose quote "This is when you find out what kind of offense you have, if you have a great offense you make something happen. It's also when you find out what kind of defense you have, a good defense keeps something from happening." And 5 seconds later. Brunnell grabs the ball and puts everything he has into that pass and Moss is making those little legs hussle. I am still shocked that our 'little receiver' to quote some of the complainers around here can run quicker then I have saw the tall yet inept Gardener run.

A sick relative. And Madden needs to come out and back those words or my opinion of him will get worse, which I didn't think was possible. lol

Maybe I don't understand, but I thought that sentiment was extremely prescient on Madden's part. He was totally right, we found out a lot about our offense, and the 'boys a lot about their defense, in that very moment.

Right but afterwards did you hear Madden say what a great offense we have, or anyone for that matter? No they are acting like we got lucky. If it would have taken skill to score and we did, then why is it now pure luck?

Ah. I see what you are saying. Honestly, I didn't tape it, and I was too busy trying to to wake the whole house up screaming and jumping around to notice what anyone said post-game. :)

i think madden just talks with no memory of what he's said in the past. i'm not sure this is due to hypocracy on his part, but perhaps just intensity and focus on what he's watching at that moment. whenever i hear him say 'so-and-so is the best [fill in position here] in the game' one week, i fully expect him to name another player the next week as the best at the same position. it's only because, despite that huge noggin he sports, there's no memory of what he said last week.

that's my theory.

He also hates Frank Caliendo, wouldn't even shake his hand. Madden's a doofus and has a huge ego with nothing to back it up.

Yeah, like the second holding call on Flozell Adams.

JM, "I didn't see any holding on Flozell Adams", meanwhile, Adams has both arms draped over Daniels shoulders from behind, otherwise known as the "John Madden Pancake".

He just saw something flat and got hungry.

Madden wouldn't say we had a great offense after that game. In fact, I don't think any broadcaster would. Our offense didn't do crap for 56 minutes, so it would be slightly pushing it to claim that the Redskins offense is 'great'.

He could back up his defense claim - i.e. Dallas doesn't have a great defense because they couldn't prevent the same long play from happening twice.

If Madden was talking about Indianapolis, on the other hand, I think that comment makes sense - because they do have a good offense, and if it were great, then the Colts probably would have succeeded just like the Skins.

He could have said something along the lines of, "We'll soon see just what the Redskins' offense is really made of; if they pull this off, they just might deserve some more credit than they've been given so far."

My 2 cents

this is why i mute madden 06...or i turn off the commentary. either way, i can't stand to hear him talk, he is the biggest doofus (to quote someone else) in the world of sports...besides sterling sharpe and the entire crew of Sunday NDL Countdown..

I think you guys are taking every little thing Madden says too seriously. I think it is an extraordinarily hard job to be a color commentator -- you have to keep you mouth going nonstop. It is natural to think he might say things like this just to fill up the time. Think of it as entertainment rather than serious analysis. I think he does as good a job as just about anyone given the difficulty of the job.

I don't know of many, if any people, that like the fact that color commentators keep their mouths running nonstop. I'm sure producers want one that will (dead space is bad space and all that), but it would really add to the game if they only spoke when something could be added.

Don't think it would work? Try watching a few games of English Premier League soccer. Those commentators do a fabulous job, as far as I'm concerned. I don't need some twat constantly telling me things that are (a) obvious to everyone that has any knowledge of the sport, (b) comments slanted depending on who's winning, or (c) just plain false.

Just bring me some intelligent insughts, keep some levity and don't cheer for the other team... not a tough job at all. This is a gravy train job!
