Giants-Saints game set for Monday night doubleheader
The Associated Press
The Giants-Saints game, driven from New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina, will be played as part of a nationally televised doubleheader starting at 7:30 p.m. EDT on Monday, Sept. 19.
The game, already moved to the Giants' home in the New Jersey Meadowlands, will begin on ABC, then be switched to ESPN at 9 p.m., when ABC goes to the regularly scheduled game between Washington and Dallas in Irving, Texas. In New York and Louisiana, as well as other parts of the Gulf Coast, ABC will continue to carry the Giants-Saints game, switching to Redskins-Cowboys when the Saints game ends.
NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said other details, such as ticket sales, will be announced soon.
"We appreciate the leadership of ABC and ESPN in helping us turn this particular Monday night into far more than a prime-time football doubleheader, making it part of the overall Gulf Coast relief effort," commissioner Paul Tagliabue said in a statement released by the NFL. "The New Orleans Saints know the importance of rising to help meet the Gulf Coast's extraordinary challenges, and we salute them, too."
The NFL said fund-raising efforts for hurricane relief will be intertwined in the telecasts of both games.
Saints coach Jim Haslett, already miffed at losing a home game, found it curious the NFL would allow this game to overlap with the already scheduled Monday nighter.
"I really don't know why they're doing it," Haslett said, rolling his eyes.
Monday was the likely choice because the Meadowlands is playing host to a soccer game Saturday, Sept. 17 and the New York Jets play the Miami Dolphins there on Sunday.
The Saints are still waiting for a decision where they'll play the remaining seven games scheduled for the Superdome. The candidates are LSU's Tiger Stadium, the team's overwhelming choice; the Alamodome in San Antonio, where the Saints are living and practicing; or being on the road for all 16 games.
The scheduling does not totally satisfy the other NFC East teams because the Giants get an extra home game from the switch - even if they are officially listed as visitors.
"I'd be smart not to comment on that," Dallas coach Bill Parcells said Monday.
The Cowboys are so looking forward to having the national attention on Sept. 19 that they've scheduled the Ring of Honor induction of Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin for halftime of that game.
Man, this could suck if they show the Saints/Giants game in my/your area and then show like the last few mins. of the Skins/Dallas game.

For those in NY and other markets where we're going to get screwed out of the first half of the Skins game, please voice your displeasure with ESPN, ABC and the NFL.
And hey, for those not in these areas, help us out and drop these guys a line letting them know both games should be shown in their entirety.

No, but I should be fine since I live in D.C.

It doesn't matter for those in NY and LA/hurricane hit areas, we're not going to be able to see the game until the Giants-Saints is over with.
That's why we need to pound ABC/ESPN/NFL with emails.

I don't guess they had much of a choice. The only other thing they could have done was have the Saints/Giants game start at 6:00 pm instead of 7:30.

I heard the Giants/ Saints game switches to ESPN at 9:00PM. They said that today on the Miami vs. FSU game. That game was on ABC and the ABC commentators just announced it a few hours ago. In other words, if you don't have cable and want to see the Giants/ Saints game you're kind of screwed.

They could easily show one on ABC and one on ESPN, just like what's going to happen everywhere except for us in NY and LA.
Guys, pound ABC/ESPN and the NFL with emails letting them know you want both games.
thanks

Here was my email to them: I have just heard that on Sept. 19 the Giants vs Saints game is going to run over the first half of the Redskins vs Cowboys game. This is unfair! I am a redskin fan and am I barely fortunate enough to watch a few games here on the east coast. I should not have to lose time from watching from those few games. At minimum there needs to be an alternative place that I can watch the first half that does not involve a plane ticket. There are many disgruntled redskin fans in new york who share these feelings.

That is a horrendous mistake on ABC's part. The NY-NO game should only be shown on ESPN. i can't believe they would consider pre-empting the Skins-Pies game that has been scheduled for months.

In my opinion here's what I see. From 730-900pm. Saints vs Giants then the switch to ESPN to allow those outside of the NY-Louisiana area to watch if there interested. Skins vs Boys on ABC exept for the people IN the NY Louisiana area then you are screwed(Maybe including Myself).I Live in Beamsville, Ontario, Canada. We get are feed of cable from Buffalo NY. However I have Bell Expressvu Satellite. I also Run Dish Network from the US. Now for anybody that has satellite Canada or Us. It should break down like this. ABC broadcasts 2 stations to the country 1 from NY and 1 From Los Angeles. Now at 9:00pm Redskins and Cowboys in that NY-Louisiana area should be able to switch over to the Los Angeles Feed (DTV Ch.287, DN Ch.246, Bev Ch.288) Now it also becomes a bonus if you are in those area's and want to see both games but don't have ESPN you can watch on the Eastern ABC feed. I also know that most cable companies offer a East and West feed of the netowrks aswell, all I can suggest is look into it for that day. It might cost $2 a month for the east/west feeds of the Us Networks. The thing I am wondering is FOX losses a game in their NFC package why wouln't the NFL give them the Primetime game to brodcast on their networks? I hope this helps and I pretty sure im correct in the way this should unfold.

If worse comes to worse:
A.Take Tuesday off from work.
B.Find a Redskins bar to watch the game or failing that a bar with satellite tvs.
C.Have lots of aspirin by your bed to combat hangover after celebrating a Skins victory over the cowturds with many libations on Monday night!

here's my email;
I find it extremely unjust that I would likely be 'forced' to watch the Giants-Saints game on ABC's Monday Nigh Football on September 19th, rather than the Redskins-Cowboys game.
I am a long-time Washington Redskins fan, and order DirecTV's 'NFL Sunday Ticket' every year just so I can view the 'Skins games. However, with the Giants-Saints game continuing on ABC at 9 pm in many areas, and no alternate location to watch the Skins-Cowboys, you're depriving fans in those areas of any possible chance of watching their team. As possibly one of those fans, I am disgusted that you would presume to make my choice of what to watch for me, and offended by the lack of sensitivity in your decisions.
While we can all appreciate the gravity of the situation that led us to have two Monday Night Football games, your poor handling of the matter is very disappointing.
grrrrr!

I will be in Punta Cana on September 19th ( my 50th birthday ). I hope and pray that these folks get ABC and ESPN there. Nothing would make my day better than watching us wipe the floor with the Cowboys on my birthday and go 2 and 0 to start the season!

I regret to inform you that you're going to get killed that night. Cheers.

If I'm not mistaken, the ABC affiliate in DC runs a one-hour Redskins pregame show, so local residents probably only get to see 30 minutes of the Saints game.

Nice picture. I loved that play where Sonny scrambled for 7 yards and a first down, dragging cowboys the entire way, to keep that game winning drive alive.

No, they can switch to ESPN and catch the rest of that game.

But not till 9PM. Is ABC really gonna start the Saints game at 7:30, then drop it suddenly at 8 for a meaningless pregame show? That would be bizarre.

More than likely they will drop the pre-game show, further screwing 'Skins fans. I don't understand why they don't just air the entire thing on ESPN. Whay make people switch channels in the middle?

That would be very strange. Thanks for posting the article.
