I got to pick James Thrash, he goes out there and does his job. He may not be the best WR, but he gets it done, especially on Special Teams. Please reply with a comment on who you think is the best "core" guy on the roster.

Thrash, Washington, Patten, Springs. I think all are equal, they go out and play 110%, never hear a word from them, and they'll do anything for the team.

Cornelius Griffin...

The first guy that comes to mind for me is Marcus Washington.

Thrash has to be up there. Its hard to say what other players are "core' skins. A core skin doesnt have to be someone thats a superstar or has 100 tackles a season. Maybe its that person that works hard, stays extra for film study, that kinda player. All we may know is that it might be someone like Jimoh....

I definitely thought of number 53 with that question. He's a real player, great on and off the field. Did any of you who went to training camp notice that he was out there every day signing autographs? He was signing them even though he was running late for a meeting he had to attend. He's a great guy. After the loss of Smoot, number 53 is who I rely on!

That must be why he is still on the team.

I would have to say Thrash as well. He has always been Mr. All Everything player even when he was in Philly.

Jon Jansen, anyone?....

Hopefully Thrash and Washington will be able to avoid the "core Redskin" label... you have to watch Minnesota and New York play if you want to watch last year's "core Redskins"...

Tom Tupa, Ade Jimoh, Mark Brunell.

Yeah, I think redeemed skin is right with Brunell. As bad as he played last year I think he has to be.

Thrash and Washington are no brainers, those guys are pure class.

Then, I am going to go out on a limb and say Portis. He has to be, we are building our team around him. I think he doesn't get the nod because he's glitzy and brash but at the same time he worked his butt off in the offseason and since he got here he's taken a leadership role. I also think the whole University of Miami thing gives him a bad rap through no fault of his own and the fact that he wanted to renogotiate a contract where he was being paid nothing despite two Pro Bowl seasons and the best first two years of any RB in history. Portis is the man!

Last two are Carlos Rogers and Jason Campbell. Gibbs obviously loves those guys and they seem to have great character. I think I read that they are both very religous too.

The legitimacy of a "core player" has been decreased greatly since free agency started.

I don't consider any of our players core players. They could leave at any time.

I do consider some players leaders, superstars, and great teammates.

Yeah, I think Jansen is the core player.

He plays one of the most important positions in Joe Gibbs football, he is the longest tenured Redskin, he is a leader in the locker room and on the field, he stays out of trouble, he does what ever is asked of him, he loves the game and he loves being a Redskin.

Did I miss anything.

He needs to shut up and just play.

Ray Brown...although we may not be building around a player at the end of his career, he is definately a "gibbs-type" player. I think "core" players are the kind that can end up being coaches for Gibbs, like Earnest Byner. They are players that can be trusted to put the team ahead of themself. Washington, Griffin, Jansen, Springs, etc. all fit in that category.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say nemo broughton...yeah he's a rook, but why take a chance on a D1-AA guy if he doesn't have some sort of defining feature, aka character, that will make you take that chance on him. Yes he's a great talent, but i think there's more to broughton than meets the eye. He's a military guy, and im sure he has respect for authority because of it, and gibbs likes that. why do you think we took mccune, who is another gibbs type player in my book. he shuts up, plays, and learns from his mistakes. look for these guys to stick around for a while.
