Westbrook fails to report to camp
Inquirer Staff Report
Unhappy with his contract situation, Eagles running back Brian Westbrook did not report to training camp today.
After missing the voluntary minicamp in May, Westbrook, a restricted free agent, signed a one-year tender offer for $1.43 million for the 2005 season, but a team source said that Westbrook was unhappy with the way negotiations for a new long-term deal have gone.
Westbrook is subject to a $6,000 fine for each day he misses training camp.
Fletcher Smith, Westbrook's agent, said yesterday that there was still a lot of work to be done on a contract extension for his client.
"It's no secret that it has been a tough market for running back this year," Smith said
After all the complaining about T.O. the one who doesn't show up. What's really funny is that When ever I said something about T.O. is holding out an Eagle fan says westbrook was the # 1 weapon any way.
I wonder what they will say now?
http://www.philly.com/mld/philly/sports ... 78150.htmlBETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Terrell Owens reported to training camp Monday, ending months of speculation about whether the disgruntled All-Pro receiver would hold out because of a contract dispute with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Owens, wearing a camouflage shirt and cap, refused to speak to reporters and walked away bobbing his head to the music on his headphones. His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, accompanied Owens and said he will meet with Eagles coach Andy Reid and president Joe Banner on Tuesday to discuss his client's contract.
"All the talk, all the rhetoric in the offseason is meaningless," Rosenhaus said. "He's here. He's not happy with his contract, but he's a professional and he'll do his best to help the Eagles win a championship."
Owens arrived shortly after 6 p.m. Players were due to report by 7 p.m. for a team meeting. Pro Bowl running back Brian Westbrook didn't show up, even though he said earlier this summer he wasn't going to hold out. Westbrook signed a one-year, $1.43 million contract in June but wants a long-term deal.
"We've been very aggressive in trying to secure a long-term contract for Brian. We had thought we were making good progress in that regard. Unfortunately, Brian made a counterproductive and almost unprecedented decision to not report to training camp," the Eagles said in a statement.
Defensive tackle Corey Simon also wasn't in camp. He still hasn't signed a one-year, $5.13 million franchise tender and doesn't plan to report.Owens' squabble has dominated headlines in Philadelphia since the Eagles lost to New England 24-21 in the Super Bowl almost six months ago.
Owens skipped mini-camps and, along with Rosenhaus, was very vocal about wanting a new contract one season into the seven-year, $48.97 million deal he signed after coming to Philadelphia in March 2004.
The Eagles have said they won't renegotiate the contract. Rosenhaus is hopeful the team will change its stance.
"It's always productive when you have dialogue," Rosenhaus said. "We're looking forward to it."
Owens was a big part of Philadelphia's offense last season, setting team records with 14 touchdown receptions and seven 100-yard games.
Philadelphia started 13-1, winning nine of the first 12 games by double-digit margins, including five by at least 21 points.
Owens, however, broke his leg and severely sprained his right ankle in week 15 against Dallas, an injury that sidelined him until the Super Bowl. He defied his doctor's advice and returned for the title game, catching nine passes for 122 yards.
Owens earned a total of $9.16 million last year, including a signing bonus, and is scheduled to earn $3.25 million this year, plus incentives.
He has another signing bonus of $2.5 million, a roster bonus of $5 million and a base salary of $770,000 for a total of $8.27 million in 2006.
"Terrell is here to play football, he's very serious and businesslike," Rosenhaus said. "Let me and the Eagles handle his concerns over his contract."
Rosenhaus didn't completely rule out that Owens could leave camp but said he's optimistic the two sides can avoid that scenario.
"We're not here to negotiate in bad faith or threaten to walk out," Rosenhaus said. "This isn't about leverage."

I've heard that he was offered a deal on par with what Rudi Johnson got. His agent, the same as McNabb's, was under the impression that he was going to show up.
He can sit out all he wants, but it'll get him a new deal no quicker.

While Eagles receiver Terrell Owens opted to report for the start of the team's training camp, running back Brian Westbrook surprisingly decided to stay away.
Westbrook signed a one-year restricted free agent tender earlier in the offseason and reported for a mandatory minicamp, which Owens skipped. Westbrook wants a long-term deal, and even though he's now represented by the same agent as quarterback Donovan McNabb, our guess is that the Eagles will take a hard line, fining Westbrook for each day of his absence.
Because, however, Westbrook's RFA tender did not include a signing bonus, the team will only be able to impose daily fines until he shows up.
Per a little-known league rule, if Westbrook stays out past August 8, he will forfeit the ability to become an unrestricted free agent in 2006. Players under contract who fail to report within 30 days prior to the commencement of the regular season lose a year of service credit.
As to Owens, his decision to report comes on the same day the television cameras caught a lukewarm greeting by Owens of his agent, Drew Rosenhaus.

Lose him? He signed his tender. He's not going anywhere.
The question now is does cheap Lurie try to collect the fines imposed for missing camp? If he does, the relationship is over, Johnny.

its funny that he's holding out when the eagles haven't budged on their stance on TO...wouldnt that even hint to him the slightest bit that he isn't going to get his money, and he should just play this season and worry about it next year--after all, isnt all his money from that one year deal guaranteed...damn, i'd love to make that kind of money for 16 games...athletes these days..

He WILL report to camp on or before August 8th.
After that date his tender gets voided and he CANNOT become a free agent next season. Some wierd rule involved.

I really have to side with Westbrook here. T.O. just signed a longterm contract after BEGGING to go to Philly. Westbrook, on the other hand, has yet to see any money in his NFL career. He made $375,000 last year! That is rediculous! A one year $1.43 mil contract is just an insult to the second best player on that team behind McNabb. In this situation the Eagles really are being cheap! He is worth far more than that. I laughed at T.O. when he likened NFL contracts to slavery. He has always gotten everything he wanted just by whining and has never had to suffer the consequences of his actions. In Westbrook's case however, I feel like the analogy, though still rediculous, seems to fit. Two years ago he won two (maybe three) games in the final minutes and turned that team around. Last year, they rode him through the season and the playoffs. Still, they just give him as little as they possibly can by NFL rules. He deserves much more but that Lurie sure is a cheap guy.

I'm not so convinced. Westbrook is crucial to the offense. What are they supposed to do, have unproven Ryan Moats just step right in? Not having Westbrook removes a lot of options. It would be devastating to their system. Not having TO just makes them less competitive.
The rumor was that there was an offer on the table, but that it was pulled when he didn't show up to camp. His agent was allegedly taken off guard by the decision not to report to camp.
If they were close, they will still work toward the contract. It would essentially be giving up on the season. No way Reid doesn't make sure a deal gets done. Holdout or no. The free agent eligibility becomes a moot point if a long term deal is signed, which is what both parties want.

How can a guy sign a contract in June, and hold out for a new deal in early August? That is too lame.

The thinking was that he would sign the tender, and that the Eagles would work toward signing him to a long term deal before the start of the season. If that is what he was told, and Banner is trying to drag his feet or low ball him, then the Eagles are not negotiating in good faith.

There was a deal on the table rumored to have anywhere from $8m to $12m up front. Since he's holding out that deal has been pulled from the table.

Westbrook important yes. As important as everyone thinks he is? No. Westbrook had 250 (252 if you count special teams) touches total last year (regular season), with 177 of those being rushing, and many others on the team having a higher rushing average. Plus they are returning Corell Buckhalter -who if he isn't injured- should roughly split rushing carries with him, and they drafted Reggie Brown in the second round to augment their recieving core -who should replace many of Westbrooks 73 catches. If Buckhalter gets injured they also drafted a runningback called Ryan Moats who is the same runner Westbrook is (except Moats might have a case of fumbilitis) The Eagles are deep at RB. So they don't need Brian Westbrook at all. Can Westbrook break open a game? Yes. Is he worth a huge contract before he's prven himself as a viable feature back? No.
It would take more than Westbrook holding out to significantly challenge the Eagles. They are well prepared to replace him. A deal will get done, and Westbrook will start, but do they need him? No. TO would be a much bigger loss, as they can't replace him.

I really wish that Tapeh hadn't dislocated his hip last year carrying four Rams. It could have been Westbrook/Tapeh/Moats/Mahe at RB this year and Ritchie/Tapeh at FB.

It's amazing how there's always one guy that's the lynchpin of the Eagles offense. First it was McNabb, then it was TO, now it's Westbrook. Next year I hear it's gonna be Hank Fraley.

Westbrook showed up at camp. You can all go back to hoping he gets hurt.

Hell yeah I hope he gets hurt.
You dont have to admit it if you dont want to but you know that Westbrook is a big key to their offense and that they need him out there. Buckhalter is constantly out and hurting already. Whose next? Reno Mahe?
Westbrook not playing would have/would be a big blow to Philly's offense.

Losing anybody is a big blow, but there's always someone there to step up. No Westbrook means more work for Moats the WestyClone. Instead, we get to use 'em both.

Moats is similar in size to Westbrook but that's pretty crazy to just assume that he can go out there and have the same Westbrook-type impact as a rookie. He's completely unproven.

What? Rookies are unproven? When did this crap start?
