Redskins Fantasy Football Sleepers?

by Free Sean Taylor!
Hello fellow 'skins fans! I'm really excited about the upcoming football season, I think we'll be running all over the competition..

Joining my first fantasy football league this year...I've searched the forums for this topic, but I couldn't find it, I'm not even sure this is in the right forum, but...

Any ideas for some sleepers on the Redksins?
Yahoo Fantasy Football lists Chris Cooley as a running back, even though he doesn't really carry the ball. He still had 6 TDs last year and 300+ yards through the air and I think He'll be even better this year.. you all got any advice?

Can you guys think of another Redskin who'll break out this year?

Santana Moss- I know he'll get at least one return TD
Taylor Jacobs- is he our #3 guy now? This guy's never really had a chance..
Robert Royal- seems like he knows how to get open in the endzone
Maybe one of those big bruisers we drafted this year?

Thanks and Sorry if this is in the wrong forum..

For future reference.

If they "free sean taylor" then he'd be someone to pick up.
Matt Bowen should have quite a few sacks.
Arrington if he comes back could be a solid pickup.

Welcome to the site, FST!

This forum is fine for the topic that you've brought up. . .a number of our members are into fantasy football so with any luck this will stir up some discussion.

Unfortunately for the Skins (when it comes to fantasy football), our D is what dominates, not our offense. And, while we keep other people from scoring on us, there are more "exciting" teams out there that tend to get more INTs, fumble recoveries, blocked kicks, and score points with their defense. I've been frustrated in the past with having a good Skins D as my fantasy starter but not seeing them produce a lot of points. (This is all assuming that the fantasy league that you get into doesn't do individual players on defense, which I think is the most common).

As for sleepers on offense. . .this one is going to be hard to tell. Portis should be in for a better year than he had last year (even though his yardage was good he had so few touchdowns that his fantasy stock has declined). . .you can probably pick him up later than you might think, and he could be a solid #2 back on your team.

No one is expecting Ramsey to do well--this could be his year. A gamble, but I'd take him as my backup QB as long as I had a reliable guy in front of him.

Simply put, I don't expect any of our receivers to put up great numbers, and don't think that you can expect that this year. Right now I'm thinking that Patten is the only player that will give you consistent numbers each week. He seems to me like he might become a good threat in the red zone, so he'd be a great #3 receiver on your team.

I definitely think that getting Cooley and keeping him as a TE is a great idea if you can't get one of the big name TE's in your draft. Even with all the hype that Skins fans give him, he's not a 'household' name throughout the league.

You mentioned Royal. I'm not sure that I'd trust him, he's had an on and off past. While I'd like to see him do well with the Skins (and think that he has the potential to do so), I would hesitate before going after him. Even if you decide to go after Royal, chances are that he'll be sitting on the waiver wire, so he'll be yours for the taking.

I'm not sure how many, if any, Skins will be on my team this year. The buddies that I go in with every year are almost all Skins fans, so people tend to use Burgundy and Gold lenses when drafting, even when they're trying not to. :)

I always try to refrain from picking up Redskins. I'll always start them when the Skins play, even if someone better is available.

I think taking Moss with a mid-late round pick is a great choice, especially if your league awards points for return yards. I was able to get moss in round 8 of my draft last week, so I am pretty excited about that. Cooley's value would be higher if he were listed as a TE. There are 32 starting RB's in the NFL who, even though they may not be great, will all outscore Cooley.

Yeah, I missed the fact that Cooley being listed as an RB. . .which definitely means that he's out as a fantasy threat.

One thing that I should revise about my previous post is that I view Portis as a back that's kind of in between a #1 and #2 back. There are probably at least 6 running backs out there who will outscore him this year, so he won't be the number 1 guy on many people's lists. My strategy right now is to use my first 2 picks on RB's, taking the biggest name I can with the first and trying to get Portis with my #2.

Cooley is good because you can start him at 2 positions... in a league where you start 3 RB's for example he can fill in quite nice.

Also I think you should look for Ramsey...People wont pick him up until the draft is almost over, and I think that'll be a mistake...He's better than that this year and you can use him as great trade bait.

With our revamped offense, I firmly believe that Portis is gonna break 2,000 yards this year. Mark my words.

^^ I like your bold prediction. I'm gonna second it JH...

Redskins Potential Biggest Fantasy Sleeper- WR, David Patten...

When playing in a fantasy league you'll be able to snag Patten pretty late in your draft. I honestly have a feeling he's gonna outperform every reciever on our roster. He seems like the kind of player that Joe Gibbs is sure to love and give lots of P/T to. And even if he doesn't come out and give you 80 catches,1300 yds, 10 TD's he'll still give you some solid fantasy numbers so picking Patten in one of the late rounds is one of those low risk/ high reward type things.

I am putting a lot of money on Taylor Jacobs breaking out..you know what they say about 3rd year receivers, and usually it's true. Also if he has a breakout year he is going to need Ramsey throwing him the ball, so those would be my two picks to break out this year for the Skins.

:?

I don't know, JH. I want Portis to succeed as much as anyone on this site does, but 2,000 yards? Only a handful of rushers in the history of the NFL have ever accomplished this. Portis has shown that he can dominate when a good o-line is paving the way for him in a proven system. I have every confidence that our o-line (especially if healthy) will create some great opportunities for him. Gibbs has been talking adjustments, and we've got every reason to believe that Portis (injury free, fingers crossed) will be a special player next year.

Still. . .2,000 yards. That's over 125 yards per game on average. No more 13 yard days like he had against Pitt, or 37 yard days like he had against Philly, or missed games due to injuries. A 2,000 yard season only comes with a solid 16-game performance, and there are just so many variables involved.

It's nice to think about and fantasize about (no pun intended), but I'm going to take you up on this, "mark your words," and we'll see what happens. No offense, but I don't think you've got much of a chance of being right on this particular prediction.

(When it comes down to it, though, I really hope that you are right and that I'll be eating these words ;) )

Last year Cooley did well for me. Since he's an H-back, Yahoo lists him as "RB/TE". He was a great utility player since I could start him any time one of my best running backs or tight ends had a bye. That and he was a good offensive weapon. I plan on grabbing him this year if I can.

Redskin "sleeper" pick......I'd take Dyson. Perhaps wait and grab him as a free agent after the draft. If he is healthy and in shape, and makes the team, he still could be productive. Good luck in your fantasy league.

Everyone is ignoring an 'obvious' sleeper (if that's possible). Depending on the fantasy league... guys who play special teams can be quite lucrative. The name on the lips of all the Redskins coaches at mini-camp was Antonio Brown... so much so that people have even started talking about him getting some time at wide receiver.

Now I'm NOT saying to run out and pick him up... but as a last round pick or an after the draft pick, he could be a real steal and other than a Redskin fan, who's even going to know who he is? In leagues that award points for return yardage, it might be worth giving him some thought. And if he starts seeing spot duty in specialty situations on offense, he may even post some offensive numbers to go along with the special teams numbers.

But JF is right... wanna win a fantasy pool... leave the 'heart' picks at home... few people can. Remember that only ONE team scored fewer points than the Redskins last year (Chicago)... so fantasy pickings are slim. The offense will improve this year, and so will the fantasy performances... but is that enough in a fantasy pool? And try to remember that this is an offense that is predicated by making every offensive drive take as long as humanly possible for clock control... JG wants to win games 21-14... not 48-36.

Take that with a grain of salt.

I have Julius Jones coming back for me at RB as a keeper. It's painful but I gotta do it

Based on Yahoo's ratings, you can only use him as an RB

For fantasy football, at least how yahoo has it set up, Portis should be a great back to have, as many of you have said, the D (yahoo has you draft whole Ds, not players) will be one of the best, especially if Taylor is at saftey to get some INTs. Moss will be a good WR to have, but dont expect to start him every week. Target him as a #3 guy. Ramsey, I think will have a beakout year, but in Yahoo leagues, QBs can dominate if you get the right one. A superstar QB who gets the ball in the endzone is the key to winning, so go for a Manning/ Culpepper/ McNabb/ Brady/ Vick if you can. Keep in mind it does matter whether they get 6 by passing or running. The only other skin worth mentioning for fantasy football is Jacobs. Many here think he'll have a beakout yr. I'm among them. He's got the physical tools, should have the opportunity, and lots of WRs have broken out in their 3rd yrs (Walker, C Johnson, Owens...), but, I'm sure you can pick him up late, or if no skins fans are in your league, even after the draft. If you do get him, barring desperation due to injuries, dont start him until he proves he'll put up numbers in consecutive weeks. Lastly, some of you have suggested getting Cooley. If he is indeed listed as a RB, as he was last yr in yahoo, he isnt worth any consideration. I love the guy, but he isn't going to get 100 yrds and 2 TDs a game like many starting RBs. If you can play him as a TE, he is a late rd pick. Personally, I find there to be a huge drop of at TE, from guys like Gonzolez to the Bubba Franks and Chris Cooleys. Personally, since other positions don't have a simular drop off, I try to beat everyone else to the punch and get an elite TE in the 3rd or 4th round. If you do this, Cooley would just be a back up. If you can't get a star TE, then Cooley is a good starter. BUT DONT GET HIM AS A RB!
