The Baltimore Orioles, 3-2 winners over the Minnesota Twins, were a team on the eve of a drastic makeover with the acquisition of Florida Marlins pitcher A.J. Burnett and infielder Mike Lowell likely to be finalized Tuesday, according to several baseball sources. The Orioles will send outfielder Larry Bigbie, pitcher Hayden Penn and relievers Jorge Julio, Steve Reed and Steve Kline to the Marlins. Baltimore also will receive minor league outfielder Eric Reed.

Rest of article here.

I don't like sending Bigbie and Penn to Florida.

Burnett and Lowell better produce.

I really hate giving up Hayden Penn, it's one of those trades that will some day come back to bite us in the butt. Oh well, I don't have a say in the matter. The O's need something to spark a major rally if they want a shot at the post season!

I dunno. Penn has been all over the place as of late. I liked him in the beginning, but getting a guy who has thrown a major league no-hitter in Burnett could be valuable going into the second half.

Julio? SEE YA! What happened to that guy? He had really good stuff for a while, and then just lost it.

Bigbie? I am upset about that one. He was solid, and just needed some more consistent playing time, IMO.

Man! Bedard looked solid last night. When we get Javy back, the O's are gonna start beasting again.

What the hell is up with Javy anyways?? You never hear about his progress or when he'll be back. I want him back!!!!!!

I heard today that Javy was likely going to be designated to a Minor League assignment, and possibly be ready to come back for the Texas series next Monday. It's going to be sweet when he gets back; some consistent offense from the 9-spot will be huge.

HOLY COW?? Minor league?? I'm taking a trip to Bowie. I would love to see him play there. Where did you hear that Gibbs' Hog?? I may have to cancel my weekend plans.

I read it in the following article, but I haven't been able to find any more info...

Meanwhile, Mazzilli said catcher Javy Lopez could begin a rehabilitation assignment this weekend and could return to the club perhaps Monday against Texas.

Hopefully, this is true - if so, we'll probably know where he's playing in a day or two.

I think this might be a slight update to the trade...

Jul 19 The Palm Beach Post's Tom D'Angelo reports the Pittsburgh Pirates made a late push in the deal with the Baltimore Orioles and Florida Marlins late Monday, July 18. In their proposed deal, the Marlins would acquire Pirates SP Mark Redman along with Orioles SP Hayden Penn, RP Jorge Julio and OF Larry Bigbie. Marlins 3B Mike Lowell would go to Pittsburgh and SP A.J. Burnett and OF Eric Reed would go to Baltimore along with Pirates 1B Daryle Ward.

What's going on? I heard last night that the Pirates were no longer "in the mix" regarding this trade. Has anyone heard any more about it?

Yeah, looks like the Pirates are out, and the trade talks are still chuggin' along without resolution yet.

Here's a positive note - an update from yesterday...

Lopez set to return on Monday: Club officials were so encouraged by catcher Javy Lopez's work over the past few days, they decided to send him on a rehabilitation assignment starting Wednesday with Double-A Bowie. Lopez will have Thursday off, then he will play three games this weekend before possibly returning to the club on Monday in Texas.

Damn damn damn. I guess I don't get to see Javy and get my shirt signed! :-( I was hoping his rehabilitation assignment would be longer then that. I'm glad he's getting better though.

I thought you said you were going to make a weekend trip?

If you had read my original post, you would have seen that I had indicated Javy's potential return on Monday anyway.... :P

Yes!

The O's traded Ponson to San Diego for Phil Nevin.

Any trade that sends Ponson out of Balitmore is a good deal to me.

Report: Agent says Nevin deal to O's ‘not likely’
Padres acquire Randa from Reds, trying to also add Ponson

Sidney Ponson could be headed from Baltimore to San Diego.

NBCSports.com news services
Updated: 1:21 a.m. ET July 24, 2005
The slumping San Diego Padres acquired third baseman Joe Randa from Cincinnati for two minor league pitchers Saturday and demoted struggling Sean Burroughs to Triple-A.

The Padres also were discussing a trade that would send first baseman Phil Nevin to Baltimore for pitcher Sidney Ponson, but had yet to ask the slugger to waive his limited no-trade clause. The Orioles are one of eight teams Nevin can block a trade to.

“The Padres have not even asked our approval yet,” agent Barry Axelrod told The Associated Press. “If they were to ask for our approval, for Phil to even consider it I’m sure there would have to be some discussion. He and/or I would want to talk with the Orioles and find out what his role would be there.”

Source: Nevin Likely Will Accept Deal

By Jorge Arangure Jr.
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, July 25, 2005; Page E08

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., July 24 -- Conversations with members of the Orioles organization might have persuaded San Diego Padres first baseman Phil Nevin to waive a no-trade clause and accept a trade to Baltimore that could be finalized Monday evening, according to one source. Nevin has until Tuesday at 6 p.m. to reject or accept being traded for Baltimore starter Sidney Ponson.

"My feeling is that he's going to accept it," an executive from one of the teams involved said. "There's nothing that seems to be a problem. I'm guessing that he'll be in Baltimore and be in uniform on Tuesday at the latest."

Nevin spoke with Orioles Manager Lee Mazzilli and infielder Chris Gomez, a former teammate with the Padres and the Detroit Tigers, on Sunday.

"He said Lee was very convincing and painted a nice picture," Barry Axelrod, Nevin's agent, said. "They told him he'd play every day at first base or at DH and bat in the middle of the lineup. . . .

"I was frankly surprised that Phil hadn't said no immediately. When they tried to trade him to Cincinnati a few years ago, he rejected it immediately."

At one point on Sunday, Nevin, who did not play in the Padres' 5-1 loss in Philadelphia, had all but decided to play for the Orioles and almost did not return to San Diego.

Nevin's wife, Kristin, persuaded him to go home to San Diego and meet with his family before making a decision. Nevin is concerned about moving away from his three children and his mother and father, who all live in the San Diego area.

"He's got a decision to make in a short period of time and it's a big decision," Gomez said. "I wanted to be honest with him. It doesn't take much selling. It's just different. It's the East Coast, a different league and all that. I just said it's a good place to play, a good lineup to hit in and good guys on the team."

Another factor is that the Padres have told the first baseman he would no longer be an everyday player.

"That's been suggested to him," Axelrod said. "They see a need to play Xavier Nady more. He's a competitor and has been an everyday player for many years now. More than anything, he's hurt by the obvious desire on the Padres' behalf to not have him anymore."

Hmm funny but I think they said the rejection was the players had squat to do with the O's. Other then he's not coming here. I hope you are a Nationals fan.
