Could Gardner be a Skin this season?

The more articles I read, the more I am convinced that Gardner will be with us this year. Since we havent found a trade partner, and he hasnt been released, does that mean he makes the roster. Thoughts please.

We could always use another water boy, I suppose. Actually, I think the Skins would release him rather than have him play this year...if they're unable to secure any teams interested in him.

gibbs doesn't disinvite someone from offseason training unless he basically thinks he is a bum. gibbs doesn't keep bums on the roster. ergo, gardner will not play for the skins this year.
if gibbs was just trying to get a good trade, but did like gardner, he would probably have had him come in the offseason-- by disinviting him, no team would go for a trade since they know we're just going to cut him anyway. so i think gibbs definitely just doesn't want gardner.

People... Gardner WILL NOT be a Redskin this year.
You don't have to take my word for it (and obviously you aren't), but the moment Gardner walked into Gibbs' office and said that he didn't want to be here next year (2005), he sealed his own fate.
Nothing has been done because we don't NEED to.. we might as well hold on to him and HOPE that someone offers us something for him.
HOWEVER, as I have stated repeatedly... Gardner's value to the Redskins is in the cap relief that CUTTING him provides... if nothing else.
We DO NOT have the cap space to sign our rookies yet... know where the extra money is going to come from? Rod Gardner. we get about $2M in cap savings when we cut him... almost enough to give us enough cap for our rookie pool.
I can't see a way for the Skins to do both, so mark my words... the day that Carlos Rogers and/or Jason Campbell reach contract agreements with the Skins will be Rod Gardner's last day as a Redskin. It is likely that the announcements will even come together if Gardner hasn't yet departed.
Unless of course the Skins land a 7th rounder and a bag of footballs for him... in which case they'll deal him instead of just cutting him. It's the only reason he's still on the roster... to try and bait something out of someone. And none of them are flinching because a) they know the Redskins will be forced to cut him and they can get him for nothing (as already stated) and b) Gardner wants too much money on a contract re-do (which a team will want with him being in the final year of his contract)

I totally agree except to say that the Redskins should hold onto his worthless carcass for as long as possible up to the beginning of the season because there will inevitably be injuries to other receivers then we can get something for Mr. Worthless Gardner.

I disagree. Keeping the players hydrated is important. If the water is dropped and spilled then our players would drop like Gardner's reception stats.

It's not that uncommon for a team to lose a reciever in camp and then be forced to make a trade. I think that the 'Skins will wait this out as long as possible.

I don't think the Redskins have the luxury of making Gardner sit out until a team needs him in pre-season... like I said, i think they need the cap space and actually already included it in what they have 'available'. They will want to get those rookies to TC right away, and I think that'll be Gardner's curtain call.
But ALL of the NFL teams are going to have trouble signing their first round picks this year because of a couple of cap 'incongruencies' and so it is possible that Gardner's stay is extended further. Regardless, my opinion is that Rod Gardner, Jason Campbell and Carlos Rogers will NEVER be under contract simultaneously.

Some team will come calling after the 3rd preseason game or so and will need a reciever. Hopefully that team won't be us...

3rd preseason game?
Like I said... I see very little chance of Gardner being on the team at the same time as our two first round draft picks... and I PRAY those two have been signed long before the third preseason game.

You are right. They will never be under contract at the same time. Also, I don't think the Skins need to get those rookies under contract any time soon. Campbell will not play this year, and if Rogers needs 2 more months to heal his fracture and his bone bruise, signing him won't do anything except eat up cap space for a player who will play video games while he heals.

What I meant is that's usually when teams start hurting, around the 2nd or 3rd preseason game.

"A seventh rounder and a bag of footballs" lol this is what Gardner's stock has come to? I'm not a Gardner guy but he's shown enough I think at this level to deserve a 3rd.Its just that Gibbs botched the deal by doing this public dissowning of ol 87.

I dont think we can get a 3rd for Rod. The Bills cant get a 3rd for Henry, and he has been much more productive than rod.

A 3rd rounder is out of the question at this point. Teams are waiting for his release. I'm hoping Gibbs shocks the football world and retains Gardner. I still think hes a more than decent player contrary to what everyone else believes. He'll never be a pro bowler but from what I've seen he has a pretty good work ethic, great size, good speed, etc. We should keep him, I honestly think he'll come in handy and can potentially really create for us in the Red Zone especially if we use him as a slot reciever

We cant kep him, first of all we have plenty of other wr's, and he cost too much because we have to sign rookies

For the record, i don't think we'll get anything for him.
It's irrelevant what a Redskin fan thinks his value is... truth is... he's had plenty of opportunity to find another team and found new suitors.
At this point that's much more likely to be because Gardner and his agent have been unable to agree to a contract extension with anybody as opposed to what the Redskins are 'asking' for him. So obviously he doesn't have that much value having found now takers even after the draft... teams aren't even willing to give up picks for him NEXT year at this point.
If a dumb Canadian can figure out that the Skins will be hard-pressed to find cap room elsewhere to sign their rookies, so can the other 31 NFL GMs. By letting the Redskins release him, not only do teams not have to give up anything for him, they have the added advantage of being able to start 'fresh' from a contract standpoint.
If the rookies aren't signed by the beginning of camp and a #2 WR gets hurt early in another team's training camp, he might have a little bit more trade value, but that's about it IMO.
I think the mandate for Redskins management at this point will be getting the rookies into camp ASAP, not worrying about getting ANYTHING for RG... and as I've said, I think signing Rogers and Campbell will REQUIRE cutting Gardner.

You're part way right about the player, R4Life, but, as Boss point out (1) this guy has indicated he does not want to be here and (2) we "need" the space.
I also agree with Boss about the "when" as this will go as long at it takes BUT that will happen soon!
