Only one of the six players chosen by the Washington Redskins in April's draft is under contract with training camp opening in 26 days.
Eric Schaffer, Washington's main contract negotiator, just returned from vacation and immediately resumed negotiations with the agents for the five unsigned rookies. The Redskins have about $3.5 million left in their rookie salary cap pool.
Redskins vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato said he hoped deals would be done with fourth-rounder Manuel White, fifth-rounder Robert McCune and seventh-rounder Nehemiah Broughton by the end of next week. That would leave just first-rounders Carlos Rogers and Jason Campbell without contracts headed into the last two weeks before camp.
Sixth-rounder Jared Newberry signed a three-year deal in June.
Meanwhile, Edward Carhart, Sean Taylor's attorney in the safety's felony assault case, said he isn't fazed by the possible plea bargain of his client's co-defendant, Charles Caughman. Carhart said after further discovery in the case he's more convinced than ever of Taylor's truthfulness regarding the June 1 incident. State attorney's spokesman Ed Griffith said his office in Miami is continuing to investigate other "persons of importance" in the case.
Caughman, who faces a maximum of 15 years for his felony assault charge (compared to Taylor's mandatory minimum of three years if convicted) is due in Miami-Dade County Circuit Court on Monday, one day before Taylor is scheduled to appear before Judge Mary Barzee. Taylor's trial is tentatively set for Sept. 12, the day after the Redskins open the season at home against the Chicago Bears.

Don't get too worked up, most lower round picks get signed before camp they need to prove they belong. As far as our first rounders only Carlos Rogers will be a starter this year and Jason Campbell we can be a little tougher with because he will not start anyway.

And to think that other teams in the NFL have multiple rookies starting.... ](*,)

...still bitter

Every year some team finds a lower round pick that turns out to be the next Tom Brady or Steven Davis. It would be great if one of our lower picks make it onto the starting team. I do not think that we have a lower pick that can make a major impact this year, unless Manuel White can be an effective short yardage back. At 6-2 and 244 pounds he could be.

White is slated to be an H-back, Broughton is our potential short yardage back. But I think both will only contribute on special teams.

They'll be right ahead of our return men and act as blockers. I still think we could have got these cats as undrafted rookies, damn....bad memories of the draft have come back.

Anyway, they should all sign pretty quick. Campbell should sign quick cause any other NFL team would have drafted him in the 2nd round. He should be happy with whatever the Skins offer him.

As for Carlos, he should be ok but his injury might hamper the contract. If there is really something wrong then he might not sign as easily. I don't think any of them have crappy agents. No Postons, no problems.

This group do not play a lot of rookies anyway - they love to go with the more experienced players. We are stiil a very young team (overall!) this year and that includes the oldest player in the NFL!

I don't get why these rookie contracts take so long. All over the internet you see "Benson should be late for Camp" or "Ronnie Brown looks to be late for Training Camp"...

I mean, the NBA Draft was like 15 days ago and already 1/2 of the first rounders are signed, some even signed like 4 days after the draft.

What are the agents and everyone doing, they should just sit down for one or two days and just get the contract done. Why do they have like a meeting on Friday, and then wait a few weeks for the next one. Just meet somewhere, sit down, and agree on a contract.

These guys will surely make a difference for us in the redzone. Even if the line isn't as good as we want them to be and only a slight improvement from last year, these guys will still help a lot. Portis isn't my man but he doesn't have the weight to knock a pile backwards. Broughton or White could be that guy who can just fall into the endzone for us when need be.

Thats worst case scenario. Im counting on this line opening holes as wide as the Atlantic, CP getting 1500 yards, and 10+ TD's. Broughton and White will be stars on special teams and will aid Antonio Brown into the spotlight with their excellent blocking.

Hop on the badwagon theres still room!

The NBA and NFL have different CBAs which effects how the dollars flow in each league.
NBA money is guaranteed (all of it). The agent will get his cut and will know it's coming. The top NBA players normally drop the agent after the first contract any way (they then hire "Advisors"

The NFL only guarantees bonus money, so the Agents have more to calculate and balance because they need to know how much cash they will be getting. NFL players fire and hire agents all the time.

The bottom line it's the AGENTS looking for their cut

Not to mention that the NFL is a much more violent sport. A career can end in training camp before the first game check. The average career is 3.5 years. So the rookie contract is first and last deal of many players. Got to make it last right? Remember, even 1st rounders are busts, gotta get that bling while you have the chance.

Redskins Close to Deals With Two Picks

By Jason La Canfora

The Washington Redskins could complete negotiations with at least two of their five unsigned draft picks in the next few days as they close in on contracts for H-back Manuel White, a fourth-round pick, and fullback Nehemiah Broughton, a seventh-round pick.

The team also is negotiating with linebacker Robert McCune, its fifth-round pick, although it likely will take more time to complete deals for its two first-round picks, cornerback Carlos Rogers (ninth overall) and quarterback Jason Campbell (25th overall).

White, who was selected 120th overall from UCLA, is expected to agree to terms in the coming days, according to a source with direct knowledge of the situations, while Harold Lewis, Broughton's agent, said he was pleased with the pace of negotiations and had another session planned for yesterday afternoon.

The Redskins have already signed one draft pick, linebacker Jared Newberry, who was taken in the sixth round. Newberry, Broughton, McCune and White could all contribute immediately on special teams, while White and Broughton were brought in to improve Washington's short-yardage offense.

Rogers was expected to compete for a nickel back spot but is unlikely to be ready for the start of training camp Aug. 1 because of a stress fracture in his foot. Campbell is slated to be the No. 3 quarterback. Players selected that high in the draft often do not sign until shortly before the start of camp and negotiations are expected to intensify over the next two weeks.

This really excites me. My goodness!!!! Having our line fully intact and giving Portis a lead blocker of his size is going to be incredible!!

From wghat I have heard, Broughton won't be blocking. Manuel will be doing that, he is going to be getting carries.

Nehemiah Broughton
The Redskins have completed the signing of running back Nehemiah Broughton, the team announced on Tuesday. Broughton was the Redskins' seventh-round selection (222nd overall) in the 2005 NFL Draft.
Broughton joins sixth-round pick linebacker Jared Newberry as the Redskins' rookies who have signed their rookie contracts thus far. The pace of rookie signings should pick up league-wide over the next few weeks heading into training camp.

Broughton, 5-11 and 250 pounds, is expected to compete for playing time at both fullback and H-back. At The Citadel, he played in 40 games with 29 starts and recorded 581 carries for 2,638 yards, 25 touchdowns. He also tallied 47 receptions for 355 yards and three touchdowns.

During his senior season, Broughton recorded 179 rushes for 788 yards and five touchdowns starting in every game. For his efforts he was named All-American first-team (as a fullback) by The NFL Draft Report. Broughton was also named All-Southern Conference first-team (as a tailback).

In 2002, Broughton posted career-highs rushing attempts (224), yards (1,038), touchdowns (11), and receptions 21 earning All-Conference second-team selection.

Broughton, nicknamed "Nemo," is from North Charleston, S.C., where he attended North Charleston High School. He was an All-State and All-Low Country selection as a senior, rushing for 1,670 yards and 23 touchdowns.

I think this guy will become a valubale piece of our offense. He will be the short yardage back Gibbs has been looking for.

Redskins Sign McCune; Three Unsigned Picks Remain

Saturday, July 23, 2005; Page E02

The Washington Redskins have signed draft pick Robert McCune to a three-year deal, league sources said, leaving the club with three unsigned picks with training camp set to open next weekend.

McCune, who was selected in the fifth round (154th overall) out of Louisville, is expected to help the special teams immediately and will fight to work his way into the linebacker rotation in training camp.

McCune, 26, started playing college football late after serving in the military and has earned praise from the coaches for his work ethic. His deal is worth approximately $1.05 million with a $125,000 signing bonus, sources said.

The Redskins have yet to sign fullback Manuel White , who was taken in the fourth round, although that deal is expected to be completed early next week, sources said. Negotiations with their two first-round picks -- cornerback Carlos Rogers (ninth overall) and quarterback Jason Campbell (25th overall) -- could prove more complicated, with little progress being reported league-wide on top draft picks thus far. Rogers's injured ankle may keep him from participating once camp starts; Campbell is slated to be the club's No. 3 quarterback this season.
