Three and Out: Williams, Jacobs, Cartwright
By Rich Tandler Editor-in-Chief
The secret of Taylor Jacobs is about to get out, plus some tough talk from the defensive chief and Rock rolls on despite challenges.
Three and Out
Gregg Williams— It was a treat listening to the Redskins’ Assistant Head Coach—Defense talk nearly nonstop for 30 minutes about the Redskins defense following one of last week’s minicamp sessions. When he was hired as the head coach of the Bills a few years back, the word was that he got the job because he blew them away at his interview and it’s easy to see why. Not that every coach who rises to an NFL coordinator job isn’t sharp and intense, but Williams takes that to another level. He’s also honest, almost to a brutal fault. When asked about LaVar Arrington’s injury, Williams said, “There are a lot of guys out on the street corner with NFL ability. If ability was all it took to play in this league, those guys wouldn’t be on the street corner any more. It’s more about accountability and availability. This is a production league.” In short, LaVar, you’d better get well soon. (Look for a series on Williams’ observations on the defense here on WarpathInsiders.com over the coming days.)
Taylor Jacobs—If he’s not careful, he might not end up being the Redskins’ surprise player in 2005 as everyone will have heard about him. Actually, it wouldn’t be his fault if it were to happen as it’s not Jacobs but his teammates and coaches who are effusive in their praise of him. David Patten wondered why Jacobs isn’t a starter, Kevin Dyson couldn’t say enough good things about him and when Joe Gibbs lists the players who have performed exceptionally during OTA’s and minicamp, it doesn’t take him long to get to Jacobs’ name. Following an injury-plagued rookie season, the 2003 second-round draft pick out of Florida didn’t have a breakout season last year by any stretch, with 16 catches for an 11.1-yard average, but the Redskins’ passing game was such a mess in 2004 that nobody involved with it prospered. It certainly appears that he will get his shot this season. The bet here is that he will make the most out of it.
Rock Cartwright—This is another name that Gibbs consistently mentions when he talks about guys who are working hard this offseason. There’s nothing like have the team draft two players who could play your position to spur you on to boost your effort during the summer. It’s not like Cartwright is any stranger to hard work, mind you. He was the team’s short-yardage specialist in 2003 despite the fact that he has less-than-average size (5-7, 224) for a fullback. Cartwright scored four touchdowns and moved the chains for a first down 36 times. Last year when Gibbs came on and made it be known that if don’t start, you’ll have to play special teams, Cartwright fought and went from a player with limited special teams abilities to having pretty good ones. He’s far from a lock to make the final roster this year, but if he does go he won’t be going quietly.
OUT!

i like the things said i agree with them. I just hope Lavar gets well soon so he can prove to Greg that his ability is amazing enough to play for his D. Imagine what type of blitzes he can come up with our linebacker and secondary cores. I just cant wait

No one on this team is above criticism, not "mouth" Lavar, or anyone else. Cartwright is just taking up a roster space. They should let him go today.

Prince Gregg = Higher on the picking order than LaVar.
This actually scares me, though, that Arrington will go thinking out loud to the media again.

It’s more about accountability and availability.
Right on! GW is a Joe Gibbs' coach.
But I think that these types or remarks about Lavar are more to stir him up into playing well as a TEAM player rather than to put him down. GW is pushing Lavar., It is up to Lavar to decide whether this push is inside or outside of the organisation. Lavar will make the right choice as a TEAM player. I hope he does.

I don't think that's quite GW's meaning, although your emoticon makes me think that GW was being as harsh as that.
I take the statment to be
(a) a motivator, as several have said, for Arrington to play Redskins team football. Wilbur Marshall, for all his talent, often played himself out of position in his first couple of seasons. Marshall also grumbled that Richie Petibon would not let him free-lance like Lawrence Taylor, and pile up the sacks. Eventually, Marshall learned, and had his best years playing to his responsibilities within RP's system.
(b) and, I take it that GW is saying that raw talent alone does not make an NFL player. There are loads of talented guys who could not following their coaching, and, zoom, down the shoot they went.
Did the Redskins ever really miss Arrington last year?
On the same principle, do we expect that they will miss Sean Taylor if Taylor continues his path to the Dark Side? If, that is, he follows out whatever made him unable even to return calls from Joe Gibbs...no matter what his lawyers make of the gun assault case.

I sure hope that they are right with Taylor Jacobs. I feel like if he can step up and become a legit #1 receiver we will have a real chance of contending for a playoff spot or even win the division. That would give us some real weapons on the offensive side of the ball. Portis, Jacobs,

ey, and Moss are all legitament threats.

I expect the Sean Taylor loss will or would be the most detrimential thing to happen the team. We could lose Lavar and be ok. And I hope that Taylor Jacobs becomes the man.

Cartwright is one of those players that always gives 100%. the fact that he has to fight for a roster spot every year and succeeds makes him even more valuable in my opinion.

nik was commenting on the Sean Taylor post earlier in the thread. That Lavar would really not be that big of a deal if he does not play. Sean Taylor however would be a great loss.
