I keep hearing all this talk on how great the 46 Defense is.

Didnt the Skins find a way to beat the 46 defense? If they did, can you please give teams who used it against us and how to beat it.

WE DID NOT RUN THE 46... Before anyone says we did. We run an attacking 4-3. For some reason, everyone likes the sound of 46... Even some media. If Gregg has said we ran it, then he created something new.

46 can be countered if you can realize where the blitz is coming from. If you know or have an idea where it'll usually come from, it isn't to tough to play.

Ironically, just this past week the '85 Bears vs Dolphins game was on. As many of you know, the Bears were undefeated until that Monday night game in Miami. What was said during the program was that Miami began to spread the field out, and receivers cut their routes short since pressure is generated so quickly. I think Dan Marino's ability to get rid of the ball quickly, coupled with recognizing where the pressure was coming from greatly neutralized the 46's effectiveness.

In years afterwards, Washington was able to able to beat the Bears partly because our defense was also quite formidable, and because Gibbs was able to get the ball out to the Posse and tight ends quickly. Like anything else, teams adjusted to Buddy Ryan's 46. Much of our current defensive strategies are based out of Gregg Williams' experience gained while coaching under Buddy Ryan.

Williams is known for the different looks he gives offense. In 2003 he is noted for not running the same scheme twice. DEHog has reported that he'll use about 18 different packages this year. Last year I remember the 46, 8 man fronts 5-2 and a few that I still don't know what they were.
But they worked

So you did not see us stack "8 in the box? When Bowens got those two sacks last season. Do you think he was in coverage 15 yards back or was he in the box? Yes, we used it and often, it put us position to be very effective against the run.

46 will kill the run and force the opponent to play the way you want them to. If you have two good cover corners you will kill with this scheme.

The only way you can attempt to beat it is to spread it, but if you have a good line up front and fast LBs who are good in coverage underneath, you will dominate and frustrate the QB into mistakes.
