9 yards per carry

I was watchin' NFL Total Access and they had a segmant on the Redskins: They were talking about their development throughout the OTA's....they said good things and bad....
the bad: loss of smoot + pierce can hurt the defense.... + LaVar is out with the knee.....
good: the participation is at 96 % and Clinton Portis
lol...they said "Although Portis got over 1300 rushing yards in 04', he averaged only 3.8 yards per carry out of 343 attempts....
Portis: "I'm aiming for 9 yards per carry next year"
....then they were like...."did he just say 9 yards per carry?" lol....CP...u gotta luv him

Well we are developing other elements of the game that might make that 9 yards per carry possible. Of course we could have nothing going on and Clinton Portis would still be aiming that high. lol Gotta love his attitude.

CP is a freak... can't take anything he says seriously.
DEHog said that yesterday when CP was talking to the media, he told them all that 'we' had the fastest receivers in the league, so the Redskins were going to line up receivers 4 wide, send them deep and then run the draw play. (Check out all of the coments from mini camp yesterday here:

All joking aside, the draw is a great play in that situation but ONLY if you have established that deep threat. But that's what a lot of the buzz was around yesterday at Redskin Park... the speed of the receivers and whether or not they will be able to create that deep threat that was absent in 2004.

their speed will open up some large holes for CP and our revamped o line should do the rest

As of right now, Portis is our only proven playmaker on offense which is sad. But at least the Redskins can only get better.

Portis is the only proven play maker on offense?? Is that freaking joke? What about Chris

ey. That kid is a tank and he made more then one outstanding play as a rookie. His second year is only going to get better. I agree Portis has the capability to be a weapon but I don't think he scared many defenses last year because of our lack of other options.

ey, Portis, and revamped passing game will be all the weapons we need. Look at Moss' numbers by the way. He was good for long yardage. Less catches then Coles but higher average yards per catch, that is exactly what we need, no doubt someone was thinking that when we signed him.

Notice how I said "proven." I knew someone was going to say
ey. Once again, I personally find it offensive that last year our leading receiver was an h-back that should be left in to block and will be left in to block more this year. The fact that
ey was the best td receiver last year tells me our passing game can only get better.

Who cares how many 'proven playmakers' there are? How many were there in our Super Bowl wins?
Gibbs' offense isn't about playmakers, it's about EVERYONE making plays. Big difference.
So many people just fail to recognize the ENTIRE PREMISE of Joe Gibbs' offense. Which is to stifle the other team with ball control and take as long as humanly possible to move the ball down field and then score. Sure there are many plays where there is a deep threat in the play, and sure that was a big factor in our lack of success on offense last year, but it doesn't change the fact that the entire offensive system is built around gaining 4-5 yards a play.
Not picking up huge chunks of yardage.
There isn't a need for an offense full of big playmakers when big plays have little role in the scheme. That isn't to say that there aren't places to make use of a playmaker at any position, obviously good players can always do good things, but it's to say that it's a whole different mentality than some people seem to grasp.
It's actually a great passing play in Gibbs offense when you run a quick hitch, gain five yards, stay in bounds and keep the clock rolling.
No matter how much things outside of the game changed, I don't think Joe Gibbs' impression of what it takes to be a successful football team on the field have changed all that much.
This offense needs guys dedicated to being a team, because EVERY play is the result of the team's effort. No one individual can or will ever carry this offense.

I think the Boss has hit the nail on the head you have to look at the history of Coach Gibbs to see what he is talking about... does any one know what John Riggins longest run was I don't, but I would say the 65 yarder Portis hit on his first run from 04 season probably tops it. Gibbs is a patient coach that runs it at you and pops the short pass to keep'em honest. To this I ask two questions in the era of the long bomb and the speedy backs is the Coach we chose going to conform... no disrespect love Coach Gribbs but from watching season 04 the two coachs that had the most trouble I seen was the two "old schoolers" (Parcells, and our guy) lastly why spend so much money for Portis, again no disrespect, when we could have boasted the o-line and got a cheaper back to get us those 4-6 yard gains.

If he looks at Moss numbers(18.6) I wonder if he'll that Moss is ranked #4 in avg yds per catch, behind Lelie(20.1), Plaxiglass(19.9) and Pinkston(18.
Moss will make the Defense think twice about dropping that safety on early downs. If they still bring the safety down what happens when Patten and his (18.2 ypc) lines up on the other side?
We should really drop this topic, because ALL the news I read outside of THN says the we did not address the WR position in the off season.

Welcome to the board ShortDawg
Gibbs has been known to take his shots down feild in the past and he says he took shots last year. I said, he said because I didn't really see that many personally

. His trade for Portis caught everyone off guard last year because of his size and style of running. But Portis gained over 1300 yards and people would rather say he had a bad year then admit he did fit in what Gibbs is trying to do. Why would he have to upgrade a O-line that had Jansen, Thomas, Raymer, Dockery and Samuels or was how was he to know his best liemen would go down. Jansen's injury changed everything last year, as Gibbs adjusted his line, he realized he had to change QBs. Things have actually improved day by day since then. Portis says he wants to average 9 yards per carry this year after 3.8 last year. I'm willing to split the difference and I'd be happy with 6.4
We are headed in the right direction and that is step number one.
Gibbs didn't come back to be winning the the first year he came back to restore us to who we were.

9 yards a carry isn't good enough. it could still take more than 10 plays to get into the endzone! he needs to get a touchdown on every carry.
then even if he only got about 15 carries a game, that would be like 105 points a game, which should be a pretty safe margin for victory (unless we put brunell back out on the field and he starts giving away free touchdowns to the other team again).
