Mike Martz

i know mike martz rubs a lot of people the wrong way, and i understand that. but what has never made any sense to me is when people suggest that he is not a good coach or could/should be "on the hot seat" in terms of losing his job. the fact is, few coaches have been as/more successful than martz over the past half-decade or so.
his overall regular season record as head coach is 51-29. that is outstanding. in 1999 they went 13-3 with him as offensive coordinator, and won the superbowl. since then, this is how they've fared:
2000: 10-6, lost by 3 in wild-card playoff game
2001: 14-2, lost by 3 in SuperBowl
2002: 7-9, no playoffs
2003: 12-4, lost in overtime in divisional playoff round
2004: 8-8, won wild-card game, lost divisional round in playoffs
i, for one, wouldn't mind if that was our record since 1999. not saying i want martz- i'm glad gibbs is here. but if gibbs and gregg williams got hit by a bus and martz got fired, i'd say let's get him.

I was hoping he'd get fired by the Rams if they had missed the playoffs, and that we would then bring him in as offensive coordinator.
No such luck.

yeah that would be sweet. ironically enough, the genesis of his offensive system may have occurred here in washington. i read once where he said when he was QB coach here he loved all the 3 and 4 WR sets and fancy deep routes norv turner used for "3rd and long" situations. and he wondered "why don't we just use this stuff all the time?" so he went off to the rams and did!

Yeah, it's obvious Vermiel ain't the one who thought of it.

exactly, because vermeil was there in '97 and '98 and they sucked.
1997 rams:
5-11 record
ranked 23rd on offense
1998 rams:
4-12 record
ranked 28th on offense
1999 rams (when mike martz arrived):
13-3 regular season record, went on to win superbowl
ranked 1st on offense
so it is pretty clear that vermeil was floundering until mike martz brought his offensive system to the rams.

Very true, but you also have to factor in that the personnel for the "Greatest Show on Turf" wasn't really there until 1999. No Faulk, no Holt, no Warner, and who was the QB...Tony Banks?

It's probably the darn media that's keeping him from winning that SB title he so richly deserves.

Martz is horrible. Why? He wasted one of the best players of the past 25 years' abilities by not using him as he should have (Marshall Faulk). That's why he will never win a superbowl, his stupid decision making and pass all day mentality. You see where it got him.

I agree with part of this but Faulk never looked the same after the Pats and Rams SuperBowl. He's dropped off in production since 01.
Martz is a horrible coach IMO because he let Warner stay in the one game where he turned it over 5 or 6 times. The entire country could see he wasn't right and he still let him play.
An interesting tidbit of information I found while researching Faulk's stats. Faulk never ran for more than 1300 yards. I would also call him one of the best in the last 25 years. He was a TD machine for about 3 or 4 years. In 2000 he had 26 td's and in 2001 he had 21. He'll go to the hall.
Portis had a "bad year" with 1300? Of course... he didn't have 20 td's and didn't average 5.5 but still... The expectations of Portis are a little high don't you think? What does everyone want from this guy other than more td's? His career average (while not as long as Faulk's obviously) is still higher. We have a future HOF running back on our hands. Good stuff.

Faulk never ran for more than 1300 yds. Yards from scrimmage? - totally different story.

Right, he never
ran for more than 1300 yards. He
caught and ran for more yards but...
Clinton's best year for total rushing yards is higher than Faulk's. I thought that was interesting.

How did we go from talking about Mike Martz to the amazing skipping ninja skills of Marshall Faulk?

faulk was one of the greatest "all time" weapons. how martz didn't use him enough proves his idiocy. martz wanted/wants to air it out all day to his old receivers. faulk should have been the centerpiece of that offense but he obviously wasn't.

i wonder what BS Martz told Faulk to get him to accept a decreased role? Also to sell him on the idea that he has to mentol his replacement?

faulk accepted the decreased role because he knows he is getting old and is past his prime. yes, he was one of the deadliest players in the league for many years. but not anymore. and he isn't going to consistently make it through the season unless he splits the workload with someone else (jackson).
