Cinderella Man

It was Sunday. It has been sickening to read the news about the Skins written by our enemies. I got really angry reading the trail of posts about Sean Taylor. It was sickening to hear anything about Sean Taylor... And went to the movies with my wife and 12-year old boy to get away from it all.
We watched
Cinderella Man.
To make a long story short: Probably the
BEST sports movie I have ever watched! Surely the
BEST movie I have watched in a long while.
1. It recreates superbly and in a very realistic manner New York City (and Jersey) in the late 20's and early 30's prior and during the Great Depression. I did not know about "Hooverville" (!).
2. I never was in the OLD Madison Square Garden but if I had, I imagine it would have been like that.
3. The story is
TRUE, at least the main facts and characters.
4. The music and sound are fantastic.
5. The performances by all main actors are worthy of great recognition.
6. It makes the analogy of a hard life and the meaning of survival as much in sports as it is in life. (This analogy is what sports is all about to me).
7. The story recreates the contrast of real successes and failures by several characters. It is
NOT sugar-coated.
8. The behaviour of the media has not changed throughout history, it seems.
Do not go if you are looking for a Rocky-type or Disney sugar-coated story. My wife fought tears during several stages of the movie. But if you are
FED UP as I am with people in sports that
DOES NOT KNOW OR WANT TO KNOW about sacrifice in sports and life through thick and thin, there is no better movie to watch.
I wish
ALL athletes and our Redskins would play "for milk". Go and watch it. You will know what I mean.
P.S. This is a thread dedicated to Welch who loves history and sports history in particular, all NY posters, and BossHog who loves boxing.

Isn't "Cinderella Man" an oxymoron?

Not if you watch the movie...
Actually the printed media invented the nickname or alias in real life.

I hope you have a screen at home large enough to watch the OLD Madison Square Garden (MSG) as it would have been seen at that time.
Some of the movie was actually filmed in Toronto. And I am not sure whether they may have used the old Maple Leafs Garden to simulate at least part of the old MSG.
We'll catch up with this thread in a couple of months...

Wait, who's in Cinderella Man agian... Russell Throw. (ok, so I stole that from PTI

)
Yeah, so this morning he was arrested for throwing a phone at some butler or something.
But anyway, I too heard great reviews about it... but I'd still rather see Longest Yard.

Saw it last night. It's probably one of the best movies I've seen. I didn't bother to look up the facts, so I didn't know what was going to happen. As a result, I experienced some of the best/worst anxiety I've had in a movie theater. I love movies that really get you to care about the characters.
I'll stop there. Great film.

Finally! Someone finally watches the movie. Would you not be delighted if our Skins play "for milk" this season?
Is this movie Oscar winning material?

I thought it was amusing that in this day of movie rebellion, where fans cheer the villain and don't get sucked into the hero act anymore, everyone in the theater cheered and cringed for Braddock. Everybody, including myself, actually CARED about the guy and his family, to the point of hating guys like Baer, even though he could be a "popular villain" in another film.
I don't remember being this emotionally involved in a movie before. I'm probably going again this weekend.
Oscar? I'd be mad if it didn't win.

One of the opposing boxers and one of the corner assistants are from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, where I live!
There are so many great lessons to learn from this movie. It should be mandatory for Rookie NFL players (and several vetrerans) to watch this movie before they go to the field.
I am definitely going to buy this movie as soon as it comes out in DVD. I am going to use it in community work and other functions with Jr High and High School students where I volunteer to come to speak (once or twice a year).
I think I will go and watch it again in the big screen this weekend though.

Hello, RiC,
I'll see the movie at the first chance. (And thanks for the kind words, by the way.)
*
And a note on sports movies: I can't stand the ones that are a variation on Bad News Bears...the lovable losers, the no-hopers, who win it all, whoopee, happy ending. "Mighty Ducks", for instance, which I wanted to be good, since it was about hockey.
(One of the many good things about "Friday Night Lights" is that the underdog does not win the game, for instance. I was waiting for a "Hoosiers"-effect to squeeze itself into the last few minutes. Like oozing corn-syrup.)

I agree with you welch, but just for accuracy's sake, the Bad News Bears lost the title game!

Yes, and that's why all the imitations are inferior: Bad News Bears Go to the Astrodome, BN Bears go to Tokyo, Rocky v2 - <whatever>, Mighty Ducks, even Music From the Heart (Meryl Streep), which my daughter used to call "Bad News Bears Play Violin".

They do, its called money. A lot of players play for the money. They just made this boxer look glourious while playing for the money.

Then there is nothing to worry about. This movie is based on a true story. The main facts and characters are not artificial creations. I am not fond of most sports movies myself either. This movie is not Disney, Rocky or the like...
I will not say a word more. I will wait until you (as a New York resident and resident historian) and Boss (as a box fan) watch it.
Regards,
RiC
