Lots of RBs, DBs, LBs, but why no DT or DE?

Can someone please help me understand: Why HAVEN'T we picked up another DT or DE? Don't get me wrong; I love what GW is doing. Great scheme + great judge of talent = Great D. But I've thought all along the pass rush from our D Line last year was sorely lacking, and I'm not sure that Philip Daniels alone will change that. So, I really AM curious about what GW is thinking in not picking up another D Lineman, while at the same type bringing in lots of linebackers and DBacks. I can only guess that the real answer lies in that old saying that you can usually win a ball game if you win on 2 of the 3 teams. In the Skins case, I think this year we're bringing in sooo many LBs and DBs because we're trying to do everything we can to win on Defense and Special Teams. But that brings me back to the same question, if we really are focusing on trying to win on D and STs, why not get another DT or DE??? I just don't understand why we're not working to get better/better depth there. Anyone have a clue?

It could be a number of things.....

1. There hasn't been anyone available that fit what he's looking for
2. Cap impact
3. Waiting on someone he thinks will be released after June 1st
4. Content with the players on the roster
5. He likes one or more of the 5-6 rookie DL that have been added

and Welcome to the Boards

Just be patient to see what happens between June 1st and June 15th... Then check out our squad on the 17th when mandatory starts...

I'm sure we have our eyes on some ppl around the league who we feel will be cut very soon...
Just like I know someone will snatch Morton and Gardner...
Good question though

This is what I belive.

I think that he's trying to get a LB who can be an adequate replacement for Lavar when he's in a pass rushing package.

I think he's also looking at these LB's to see who can be converted into a decent DE.

We do have a new DE on the roster who is turning heads though I can't remeber his name right now.

He's picking up guys that have played for him, they know the system and will fit right in. He's not bringing in slackers but guys that he knows will blossom and bring something to the table.

Everyone knows the big story that will be on eve of June 17th, Its that one guy from the U cant remember his name I dont remember names of slackers, anyone who sticks up for him seriously is so biased because if he wasnt such a great player you guys wud be saying cut him, for example if it was Jimoh there would be threads about cutting jimoh, but because its Sean Taylor everyone takes his side.

I don't believe that any player is excused from skipping voluntary workouts (i.e. Sean Taylor), but like it or not Taylor's going to receive more leeway because of his talents. Jimoh's got no leverage with us, and he sticks around because he works so hard.

If we cut Taylor because of missing voluntary workouts, we might find a replacement player that could do OK in the system (Ryan Clark, for example); but IMO in the end its worth it to put up with some drama just to have Taylor on the field in B&G.

Gibbs has had these situations in the past, and some of the drama-queens are the most loved Redskins of all time. Taylor can become that. . . .

Now, with all that said, I certainly hope that we see the boy get his butt back where it belongs--with his teammates and coaches. And soon.

The key words here are "if he wasn't such a great player." Sean Taylor vs. Ade Jimoh? That's like comparing Portis to Canidate. He's the best athlete on the team. I love to watch this guy play. The fact that he does it in a Skins uniform makes it that much better. No, I'm not saying he's bigger than the team. I'm just saying I like him being part of the team vs. not being a part of the team. If it were me and I could... I'd pay Sean Taylor whatever he wanted. I'm sure every single team in the league would GLADLY take him off of our hands if it came down to that. I for one will be extremely pissed if he ever does leave. I'm definitely keeping my fingers crossed. Biased? Yup! Wait until you watch him make more big plays for the D this year and all of you will be back on the ST wagon in no time. Remember that he can only get better...

As far as GW's moves so far... I think he's confident in what he has to be honest. Griffin, Noble and Salavae'a can get it done. Big name everydown DE's are very expensive. No $$$ is probably a big reason we didn't go after the bigger names. We still don't have the money (yet) to sign our rookies. I don't think there is anything out there right now that is better than what we currently have.

It's all about the scheme and players to fit your scheme. GW did it in 3 months with our guys last year. 3 MONTHS!!!There is so much movement, deception, hiding and passing off in what he does. All of it is done with the LB's and DB's. He is really one of the only current DC's I've seen that can get along just fine without a big name end. Although he did have Kearse when he coached the Titans. Kearse was ALWAYS hurt though.

Look at a team like Indy. Freeney is probably a top 3 end and their D isn't horrible but it's not what you'd expect from Dungy. Not after what he did for the Bucs. This is Dungy's 3rd year since Tampa? The position isn't overrated but you can work around it. The point is I think you should sacrifice a position for the betterment of the team. Not the other way around. UNLESS... it's Sean Taylor!

If the D has another year like we had last year... who is going to complain?

You have a point, but should a better player be treated better jut because of his talents. Does that mean he can act up and get away with it. I dont believe in that at all, everyone should follow the same rules, because no player is bigger than the team

Maybe occassionally, but pitting an LB against a massive OT on a regular basis? I don't think so.

Yes, I too have great faith in GW, and perhaps it is just the lack of $$$$. But on the other hand, we've been spending lots of $$$$ on the other D spots. Why not the D line?? It was just so frustrating seeing the Vinny have all day to throw if we weren't blitzing.

All this tells me is that we will be using alot of 3-4 and 4-6 defenses this year.

Greg uses alot of packages but last year we didn't force enough turnovers. Look for Greg to take more chances this year if our offense struggles again.

I hope you're right. I'd love to see us start using the 3-4, as well as our 4-3 and 4-6. I just didn't think we had a nose tackle type, and when we passed on Ted Washington, I was sure we weren't going 3-4. We'll see.

I think Gibbs and GW only bring in a player that fits what they are trying to do. We made a run at Courtney Brown, but he decided not to sign with us. I don't think DE is such a pressing need that we must just sign a FA for the sake of having another DE.

We have Daniels returning, Charles Howard coming along, Reynaldo Wynn, Demetric Evans. GW also plays Lavar and Chris Clemons with a hand down.

I think we will be fine. I doubt GW doesn't know what we need.

Exactly! How can people praise GW in one sentence and then foul him for not knowing what this team needs? :?: This man knows more than us. He knows what we need and whats available. He's aware of the cap and who's injured. He knows the plays, schemes and who will fit into his system the best.

Im glad we're not making stupid impulse decisions. Im glad that FOR ONCE WE HAVE A BOTTOM OF THE BARREL DRAFT PICK THAT IS HIGHLY COVETED. Not a pick from another team, not someone elses 1st round bust but our very own late round guy who is turning heads. I am so happpy about this. I can't wait to see this guy blossom!
