We have had some very intense debates lately. So, that being said, I was wondering what the general consensus is on this sensitive topic.

I'm for looking into it, I mean if it's got the potential to cure many different types of diseases as well as improve the quality of life of different people then why not at least test it out?

I am devoutly against. History has proven that practically everything regarding science becomes exploited. Look at those idiots that constantly get a tummy tuck or facelifts.

I don't trust those idiots that say this is a good thing and they also can't guarantee anything good will come of stem cell research. They are just getting people's hopes up.

Lets make this simple.

The baby, or fetus is already deceased when this happens correct? Yet some people claim its murder. Thats just ridiculous.

If it helps cure cancer/aids/paralysis/ebola etc. then good. I hope that many people get cured by Stem Cell and live prosperous lives. But people worry about a group of cells thats already deceased? Thats taking it a bit to personal. If I could save someone from Cancer, or Cure another potentially deadly disease I would.

The Fetus doesnt suffer its aleady dead, the person who has Cancer or AIDS or whatever suffers the most, because their in pain. And I'm for this because I want to see people cured of these diseases.

Ok I have a very strong opinion on this subject. I believe that it should be thoroughly researched. Stem cells are also found in the cord blood of each and every birth. SOooooooo we are throwing away something every single day that could serve as research material.

Even though I feel so strongly about it I agree with alot of politicians that are not ready to jump into it. We are in a society where these things can be easily exploited and pushed in a direction that is not only morally wrong but a little scary. Cloning and the such should be out but if it can be used to cure common disease and regenrate lost cells then I completely support the slow process of researched it's uses.

Again my biggest beef is that the cord blood is now being disposed of, and no one would be harmed if this was collected and used for loads and loads of research. I for one would have volunteered it. We almost banked Jackson's cord blood for the stem cells but he came too soon and unexpectedly for us to get the kit and sign up for the storage service. I think I'll always regret that.

If cords cells are collected then Im all for it. As long as no potential lives are harmed then its ok in my book. Its when we start killing fetus's is when Ill have an issue with it.

The other thing is that this will start out as a good thing and will eventually become corrupt and evil as with everything else. So maybe we should just leave it alone...

What will end up happening is they will start in Europe and figure it out. They are more open to things there that we arnt. I am for it because the potential gain is greater than what is at risk. I am sure there has to be a reason they arnt using the umbilical cords.

Though I voted for...it was an semi-uneducated assumption based on what I have read so far. I will definately research this topic more as time permits. I have read several articles praising the possibilities...I would like to see the negative aspects as well so that I can form a proper opinion on this issue.

Are we differentiating embryonic stem cell research from adult stem cell research? The ethical card is played when it comes to using a fetus. I have already commented somewhat on this topic in another thread here:

Everybody who feels like they should know a little more about this topic should check out the website...I think we all need to inform ourselves about these types of issues; rather than being informed by a political party.

I think a majority of people don't normally differentiate the two, which can be unfortunate, because many people support adult stem cell research while not supporting embryonic. I have a feeling that the poll would be a little more even (yes & no votes) if everyone fully understood the implications that both types of research can mean.

a buddy of mine is expecting in september (well, his wife is), and he was telling me about how they were offered the option of saving the cord for potential use in the future (for a small fee), in the event that the child has a life-threatening illness that can be cured by the use of stem cells. how times have changed from 'do you want to cut the cord?' to 'would you like us to freeze the cord so it can save your baby's life at some point? and while we're at it, would you like to save the placenta to serve at your next dinner party?'
