LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- The Chicago Bears released former Oklahoma State defensive back R.W. McQuarters on Monday.

McQuarters, who signed a $21 million contract extension with the Bears in January 2002 that ran through 2006, was acquired by the Bears in a trade with the San Francisco 49ers in 2000.

In five seasons in Chicago, McQuarters played in 47 of 72 games and had 295 tackles and nine interceptions. Last season, he showed his versatility when he switched from cornerback to safety and returned punts.

During the last two seasons, McQuarters returned 81 punts for 887 yards and two touchdowns.

"After exploring trade opportunities with R.W., we felt it was in everybody's best interest to release him at this time," general manager Jerry Angelo said in a statement. "We respect and appreciate his accomplishments as a Bear and wish him well."

McQuarters played college football at Oklahoma State from 1995 to 1997 and holds the school's season records with 27 kickoff returns and 645 kickoff return yards.

I would LOVE it if we took a look at him. I watched him last year and he was very good on not only defense, but special teams as well. He has been solid his whole career and will not be a detrimental addition to our corps of cornerbacks at all. Plus, it would be cool to see a second guy in the secondary with dreadlocks. :)

Who would you like to see released to sign him?
Dreadlocks? Don't walk into a hair shop and call them that, you'll get strung up by your toes. Some people who are really into the meaning of locks take offence to that term. They refer to them as "locks" not dreadlocks.

Don't release Jimoh! He's a team player.

This would be a nice signing, but I think we should focus on more offensive weapon. I dont think we need anymore defense. Although he would look nice back there with Taylor.

He's a great KR, but were stacked there... I agree, our defense is set, but I still wouldnt complain if we signed him.
I think he'd be a good fit in arizona, couple more moves on defense, they are contenders...

Instead of being strung up by your toes they'll hook a car battery up to your nipples.
