Hi all,
Thanks to Tom, who sent me 40 games of the Redskins of old, I had a very Redskins weekend. I started it with the 82 championship game vs Dallas (I saw it Twice), love to see Danny "crybaby" White crying.
Up till yesterday I saw the 82 playoffs, 87 playoffs, 91 playoffs, 83 regular season game vs Raiders, 83 playoff vs Rams, 83 championship vs 49ers, 91 game vs Steelers, 91 game vs Falcons (yep the 56-17 thrashing and debut of Brett Favre, who had 2 pass att, 1 int return for td by Andre Collins and a Sack) and last a 71 monday night game vs the Rams (Allen first season).
I ´m gonna tell u guys something. After watching the 82 season and 83 season games, i came to a conclution. This team is defently going in the right direction.
If you hear the comments by the annoucers and comentators, they all said that the Skins of 81 and even the begining of 82 their ofense didnt start clicking till the last game of the 82 season vs the cards. What were the problems??? personal, yeah we had Theisman and Riggins and Monk and the Hogs were just starting, but depth and receivers with speed was needed. Pardee´s teams were not bad, but were old and slow.
Gibbs change some personel in 81 and had to adjust his system to what he had, the in 82 things started to click and then the strike, but the skins kept on winning thanks to Pettibons defense. And then at season´s end against the Cards they were just amazaing, and even though we lose Monk in that game... the ofense click for the duration...basecly till the end of 84 (when Theisman and Riggo got old).
Something that last years team had, that was eerie similar to Gibbs´s teams was that they kept fighting to the end... no matter if you are losing big or winning big...Gibbs teams never let up.... rarely other teams came back from the dead to tie or beat em...most of the time they were put away late in the 3 quarter or early in th 4th. THIS IS BIG...THIS IS GIBBS...PLAYER BELIVE IN HIM...THEY PLAYED FOR HIM...I saw this last year...I didnt see this with Norv nor with Spurrier.
What Gibbs took pride on was Special Teams, Wonsley, Evans, Coffey, Nelms, Cronan, Gouveia, Et.al he always had 3 or 4 Special Teams Specialists, he had depth on LB, CB, OT and WR.
If you didnt wanna be a Redskins you was gone, Lavender, Wilburn, Harmon, Jackson, Charlie Brown.... This didnt mean that if you were a problematic you had problems with the big boss...Manley had problems, Riggo, Theisman, Gary Clark, but coach had their back, because they were HIS players, they were Redskins to the core.
Well I dont know if watching all those game screw my views but at least I understood some of the transactions he´s making... he´s transforming this team, to be HIS team... and he´s letting Williams run the defense, just as he let Pettibon run it before.
Let me tell u something...Roger Staubach was a HELL of a color comentator, he was insightful, unbias, easy on the ears and very intelligent..I really like him, even though I hate him (u older guys know what i mean). Madden was good, and I enjoyed Jack Buck and Hank Stram.
