By Gary Fitzgerald

May 9, 2005
Sean Taylor has officially changed his jersey number, while Santana Moss will wear jersey No. 89, according to the latest roster issued by the Redskins on Monday.
Taylor will wear No. 21, the number formerly worn by cornerbacks Fred Smoot and Deion Sanders. Smoot departed to Minnesota in free agency last March.
Meantime, linebacker Mike Barrow will switch from No. 55 to No. 58, the number formerly worn by Antonio Pierce. Pierce departed to the New York Giants in free agency last March. Free agent acquisition Brian Allen will wear No. 55, Barrow's old number.
Among free agent newcomers, wide receiver David Patten will wear No. 80, the number formerly worn by Laveranues Coles.

Jason Campbell shows off his new Redskins jersey.
Also, safety Pierson Prioleau will sport No. 39. Tight end Billy Baber will wear No. 43, wide receiver Jimmy Farris will wear No. 16, running back Brock Forsey will wear No. 39 and punter Andy Groom will wear No. 2.
And with center Casey Rabach slated to wear No. 61, Ben Nowland, who is playing in NFL Europe, will switch to No. 62.
Among the rookie draft picks, first-rounders Carlos Rogers and Jason Campbell will wear No. 32 and No. 17, respectively.
Fourth-round pick Manuel White, Jr., will wear No. 48, fifth-rounder Robert McCune will wear No. 59, sixth-rounder Jared Newberry will wear No. 99 and seventh-rounder Nehemiah Broughton will wear No. 36.
Undrafted rookie quarterback Bryson Spinner from Richmond will sport No. 6 and Howard product Dominique Richardson, an offensive lineman, will wear No. 68.
It's common for players to switch jersey numbers through the course of their careers, particularly when they join a new team through free agency. It's likely that several of jersey numbers will change again before the start of the 2005 regular season.

It's ok, NC. You only have to change a couple of letters on your Fred Baxter jersey.

I think Moss will be 83 and Thrash will be 87 after Gardner departs. I just can't imagine Moss in 89.

:hmm: Can two guys wear the same number, or did Fitzgerald goof on this one?

I like this. Call me crazy, but there is something cool about having a big running back wearing 36, and a big H-Back wearing 48. Broughton compares himself to a young Bettis and if he runs like that in short yardage, that will be even better.
This is a great opportunity for them to back up those comparisons on the field.

This is good and bad.
The Bad - I have to buy a #21 Taylor jersey now.
The Good - I can sell the #36 signed by Fred Smoot, Ray Brown, and others as a collectors item to cover the cost of the new one - think of it as a rookie card.

I thought Taylor wasn't accepting any calls! How did he put his uniform number order in?

Hahaha, I was thinking the same thing. He won't talk to Joe Gibbs and discuss team business but he's worried about changing his #.
Someone, quick, think of an excuse for him.

They will change when people get cut, like Gardner. Surely, a couple of our linebackers will be cut since we have so many people at that position right now. Heck, we have 90 or so people on the roster right, almost have of which will not be on the regular season roster.

I agree

I really like the number choices for those guys, 36 & 48 are solid for big backs and if they are personally making comparisons, that would be great because that means their setting a bench mark for themselves. Two good ones I might add.
I don't mind Taylor with 21, as it has been my favorite number since Terry Allen wore it. However 36 was a better fit for in my mind, it was solid & more hardcore for a safety...not as flashy as 21.
I like the idea of Moss wearing 89, don't ask me why I just do.
Finally I'm happy I bought my Wilber Marshall #58 jersey years ago, as I'm still proud to wear it. First, as he was a great LB and Second because Pierce had it last year and now Barrow will wear it this year. If I'm really lucky, maybe McCune will want to wear it after Barrow retires, as he picked 59 probably because Barrow took 58. That last ones just wishful thinking:)

Doug must've given the greenlight to the kid using his number. That's kinda cool, although I'd be severely ticked if I saw some showboat wearing #81.

Did anyone notice that we've given away Larry Brown's #43? I thought his 43 was one of the "untouchable" ones? Didn't we learn anything from the Bobby Mitchell fiasco?

Yes... I mentioned it in my first post... Fred Baxter wore it last year.
