Head coach Joe Gibbs met with the agent for Rod Gardner on Monday and the two sides continue to "work through a process" with the fifth-year wide receiver. Gardner has been on the trading block since the end of the regular season, but the Redskins have been unable to strike a deal.
"We had some real good talks this morning," Gibbs said. "It's a process we're going to continue to work our way through. I'm going to try to get together with Rod in person here pretty soon.

"Then we're going to craft what we think going forward is best for the team and best for Rod."

If a trade cannot be consummated, it's possible that Gardner could return next season with the Redskins.

Gibbs expects Gardner to attend the team's mandatory workouts, which start next month. Voluntary workouts began in late March.

"I would think he would attend [mandatory workouts]," Gibbs said. "Obviously, he has a contract right now with us and we would expect for him to be here."

Gibbs said he hasn't discussed with Gardner what his role would be in the offense. The Redskins have revamped their wide receiver corps this offseason, adding Santana Moss in a trade with the New York Jets and veteran David Patten, formerly with the New England Patriots. The Redskins traded Laveranues Coles to the Jets for Moss.

"I haven't talked to Rod about his role in this offense or anything like that yet," Gibbs said. "We've been talking about where's the best place to have him play."

It had been expected that the Redskins would select a wide receiver in last weekend's draft, but team officials decided to bypass selecting a rookie.

Gardner was the Redskins' first-round draft pick (16th overall) in 2001 and has logged 227 receptions for 2,997 yards and 17 touchdowns in 64 games in his career.

Maybe we can finally get Rod Gardner to his potential!

A real QB (Ramsey), a real coach (Gibbs) and a second slot on the depth chart...

Looking good!

If I did drugs I would come to you for your stash.

Finally?? He is worth less than a gas-station toilet.

Why can't we just cut his useless carcass?

THE NEWS

Redskins' head coach Joe Gibbs met with disgruntled wide receiver Rod Gardner on Monday in hopes of convincing the four-year veteran to play out the final year of his contract. After the meeting, Gibbs told the Washington Post on Monday that he will not release Gardner from his deal and added that he expects him to take part in workouts next month. "I would think he would be here," Gibbs said. "He has a contract." Gardner has yet to comment since the meeting.

OUR VIEW

The Redskins are probably open to the idea of trading Gardner, as they gave him permission to pursue a deal during the offseason. However, Rod has refused to sign a long-term deal with the teams that have expressed interest in him, which has all but killed his trade value thus far. We'll continue to keep you updated on Rod's plans as more
information becomes available.

Why not release him? We should move on with players who we want and who want to be here.

At some point the FO is going to be forced to lower its expectations. Gardner's abscence from the workouts (understandable if we assume he's working out on his own) coupled with his refusal to sign a long-term deal suggests he's of the Coles "it's not me it's the system" mindset.
And, Rod, it's not the system, it's the game. If only catching weren't such an intergral part of your job.

What a lot of people in here don't seem to notice is his value. He's a first round pick who has shown signs of talent. Given the right system and some sort of consistancy at the Qb position I think he could develope into a very decent player. He's started for us ever since he's been in the league. I watched a couple games from last year and he went after balls. They were thrown high, behind, way too low for any receiver to catch. I say we keep him and let him know that he's wanted here. I think that would be a smart move for us. If we arn't getting positive remarks from his side of the table then we trade him. He has value and after June 1st we can decide.

He's a slow receiver that has problems holding onto the ball. He's a receiver that disappears for long stretches and then occasionaly hasa great game. He's Michael Westbrook, only slower and without the attitude.

Kick him to the curb and put McCants in.

I like McCants also but he doesnt give 100%. Gardner atleast works hard at practice and in games. If one week you've got a left hand quarterback throwing you passes then you've got a right handed qb throwing you passes it makes it a bit difficult. If you know anything from a receiver side of the ball you know that the rotation of a pass is completely diffrent. Also the placement of the ball is completely diffrent and the velocity. Don't be so quick to throw someone to the wolves.

I agree on Mccants but Gardner only had Brunell for one season. He's been around for 4 seasons now and his best season (which happens to be his only good season) was in 2002. Incidentally, he only had a left handed QB last year. This excuse for him doesn't cut it. Like I said, he's Michael Westbrook only slower but with less attitude.

What i'm trying to say is that if Gardner had the same QB throw to him all season this year you will see that he'll be a lot better than he has been in the past. I think with anyone on the skins, they just want some consistancy in the lineup and the coaching staff. I want him here this year and i guarantee everyone will be saying things diffrently. I'd like to see DMac in there more also. I'm not as big on Jacobs as everyone else. I like Thrash more but Gardner has potential he just need the same QB throwing to him.

Are you sure you are watching Rod Gardner?

That loser has never broken a tackle and ran for the T.D. the way all real receivers do.

Cut him now. Please for the love of this franchise just freaking cut him.

People always hate on Rod.

Because everytime you cheer for him!

"WHOOO Touchdown Rod Gardner!"

theres this...

"OOOOOhhhh Rod dropped an EASY slant for a 1st down from Ramsey..."

I think the latter just wears on peoples nerves.
Rod has all the physical tools, but I think his mind and heart just arent in it.

He doesnt have the drive because he was a high round pick. In his mind he is "Rod Gardner, 1st Round Pick" not "Rod Gardner, Washington Redskin".

If Rod actually put some of the game in his mind and heart, he could be a top tier reciever. But he's to busy staring in the clouds on easy plays, and all of a sudden paying attention on a crucial play.

Every play matters. I guess in Rod's opinion they don't.

I don't blame his hands, I blame his mind.

Potential isnt anything, thats just what he CAN do.

We know what Rod CAN do, but most importantly, we know what he WON'T do.

And thats show up each and every Sunday.

Nuff Said.

P.S His Routes are also pretty sloppy.

Agreed ... like I said...he's a slower Michael Westbrook without the attitude.

I'm really sick of hearing all the "excuses" for 50/50. He's a freaking receiver and he's "supposed to catch the ball" plain and simple. Give McCants a chance and he'll shine !
