HELP WHY?
Posted: Sun Apr 24, 2005 12:23 pm
by Clinton Portis
Need a big back. He's the big back. Rock is too small.
That is the short answer.
BIO: Starting featured back at UCLA the past two seasons, totaling 164/764/8 on the ground as a senior, also adding 20/115/1 catching the ball. Junior rushing totals were 96/379/3 in eight games. Played fullback with the first unit as a sophomore.
POSITIVES: Big, strong, athletic ball handler with potential as a triple-threat fullback in the NFL. Hard-working runner who breaks tackles, falls forward to pick up the extra yardage and can be a battering ram in the middle of the field. Patient, waits for blocks to develop and displays decent footwork for a big man. Solid hands out of the backfield and shows good blocking vision. Tough and works hard until the whistle blows.
NEGATIVES: Lacks speed around the outside and does not have a burst through the hole. Adequate blocker but must learn to finish.
ANALYSIS: Possessing excellent size/speed numbers, White is a threat handling the ball, yet also has potential as a lead blocker. Needs repetition to round out his game, but a solid prospect who could break into a starting lineup two or three seasons down the road.
PROJECTION: Late Third Round

To pick up third downs and touchdowns, duh.
Positives
- White is a big strong back who excels at getting the tough yards and is very hard to bring down. He also has the ability to play fullback and could end up seeing a lot of time there so sophomore Maurice Drew can get more carries. He will be one of the leaders of UCLA’s offense next season.
Weaknesses
- White was having a solid junior season until an injury sidelined him for the remainder of the season. With the emergence of Drew, he will have to fight to keep his starting job. While his ability to play fullback is a plus, he is a bit of a tweener right now and a lack of a definite position may hurt his stock.
Overall Analysis
- White’s powerful style of running will provide a good complement to Drew’s big play capabilitie. He could find a niche as a goal line specialist in the NFL and could see some action as a fullback if he improves his blocking.

Otis Wonsley once had three TDs in ONE game. I knew that thanks to the book "Gut Check" which is great.

that's right...and White will get a few surprise carries on the goal line instead of being the lead blocker (when he improves his blocking) all the time...

It's nice getting a big FB to pound the ball but this guy is obviously meant to be an H-back and catch passes out of the backfield. He has great hands. I think he'll be catching a lot more passes than the amount of rushing attempts he gets.

hmmmm...that's interesting (didn't consider that possibility)

He replaces HB Kozlowski (we didn't re sign) and Rock who is just too small. Great short yardage back; a battering ram. Apparently also reads the Bible. Gibbs really doing his homework.

I'm glad we are picking people based on whether or not they read the Bible.

This is a pretty good run down on White. For the Bible quote look under "Personal".

Gibbs likes big backs who run between the tackles and move the chains. #44
