Now What?
The Washington Post

With two first-round picks, the Redskins now have numerous draft options after a surprising trade yesterday. What will they do? Who knows? Here's a list of possible scenarios. They might all be wrong, but that's what makes the NFL draft such fun.
1) Trade the two first-round picks for a higher pick that could land them wide receiver Braylon Edwards of Michigan or cornerback Antrel Rolle of Miami. These are two positions of need.
Why it won't happen: The Redskins would be paying two first-rounders, a third and a fourth for one college player.
2) Keep the picks, take a cornerback ninth and a wide receiver 25th. Most draft experts believe West Virginia corner Adam Jones and Auburn corner Carlos Rogers will be available at nine and a wide receiver such as Roddy White of Alabama-Birmingham could be there at 25.
Why it won't happen: It's a gamble that receivers who can help the team immediately will be there at 25.
3) Take Jones or Rogers and then draft a quarterback at 25, perhaps Auburn's Jason Campbell or Akron's Charlie Frye.
Why it won't happen: Does Gibbs want a rookie quarterback? After making Patrick Ramsey the starter?
4) Trade the No. 9 pick for selections later in the draft OR Trade the No. 25 pick for veteran cornerback.
Why it won't happen: All the immediate impact players will likely be gone.

It seems to me that the weakest "why it won't happen" argument is the number 2 scenario as the draft, by its very nature, is a gamble.

This Skins WILL trade up.
Why would they go and get Denver's pick 4 days before the draft if they were going to use it on a player at #25?????
If that was the case they would have pulled the trigger DURING the draft when they knew for sure that the player was available.
For example, if Carlos Rogers was available at 25 they would have called Denver at that moment and offered the trade. Just like Detroit did last year when they decided to go back into the 1st round and get Kevin Jones.
You DON'T trade for a player that MIGHT be there....that is dumb.
It is obvious they acquired Denver's pick for ammunition.
The only question is if the ammunition is going to be used in a fire-fight (2 picks) or a long precision battle (trade for more picks/veterans).

Is Patrick Surtain a possibility for the 25th pick overall? Just a thought, though a first, third, and fourth round pick is really high for this guy.

The pick was being shopped, if the Redskins didn't get it days before the draft someone else would have gotten it days before the draft. The timing of this trade means NOTHING.
The Skins didn't trade this for a player who may be there, they traded it for a chance to draft some offense because a handful of players they like will be there at 25 including but not limited to: Jason Campbell, Matt Jones, Heath Miller, Roddy White, Mark Clayton, Charlie Frye etc. etc.
This pick gives us the option to evaluate and choose the best players for that value. We will be making two selections in the first round this season, and I wouldn't be a bit surprised if both of these players came from Auburn

i was thinking the same thing... Miami wants out of the number 2 spot... we have #9 and 25.... but i don't think we could land surtain too....

So you are saying
Jason Campbell, Matt Jones, Heath Miller, Roddy White, Mark Clayton, Charlie Frye etc. etc are worth the Redskin's 2005 3rd round pick, 2006 1st round pick, and 2006 4th round pick????
I respectfully disagree.
The Redskins just put a lot of mortgage into the 25th pick.
What they get for this pick better be valuable and I think it will be a stud in the beginning of the draft or more draft picks/current star player.

I'm thinking we will take Pac man or Mike WIlliams with pick #9, whichever is available, or possibly trade down if neither is available or if we want merriman. I think we traded for the #25 because there will be lots of talent still available and we want it.
My best guess is that we feel the draft class is stronger this year then it will be next year in the later part of the first round, and we are going to be a bit backed up against the 2006 cap, especially with Moss's new contract.
Think about it. We add Williams, Williamson, White or Clayton. We got the smurfs back.
One of those guys to go with Patten, Moss, DMac and Thrash. That's a very good group of recievers. Add to that the fact that the dirtbags will be strong, Portis will be Portis and Ramsey will be very good this year, and we are in for a very good year on offense.
Add Pac Man to an already great defense and we're set on defense again.
We can probably forego CB if we want too and trade down 1-5 spots while adding a 2nd rounder and still get Merriman.
We've got lots of options, and none of them hurt next year. We won't be doing a lot in next years draft, but I don't think we will need to...

Heres a riddle:
Q. What does Matt Jones have in common with Zubaz?
A. They're both NFL fads that will be forgotten in 5 years.
