This is very sad and, like someone was quoted in the article, "This really puts things in perspective".
...at least he passed away while doing something he, presumably, loved.
Arena player dies making tackle

LOS ANGELES — Former NFL defensive lineman Al Lucas died Sunday from a presumed spinal cord injury sustained while trying to make a tackle for the Los Angeles Avengers during an Arena Football League game, the team said.
Lucas was pronounced dead at California Hospital after attempts to revive him were unsuccessful, team physician Dr. Luga Podesta said in a statement.
A call to a California Hospital spokesman was not returned.
“It is with great sadness that we confirm the passing of Al Lucas. At this time, the thoughts and prayers of the entire Avenger organization are with his wife and family,” team owner and chief executive officer Casey Wasserman said in a statement.

Wow. What a tragedy. I'm sure I speak for the whole community when I say that our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Indeed, this is a tragedy. My heart goes out to his family an friends.
It's funny how we take for granted the dangers of football. No wonder some players try to get huge contracts to play.
They are one freak play from never waking up again. Interestingly, the Skins are no strangers to players dying after competition.
Near the end of the article, the author wrote:Washington Redskins tackle Dave Sparks and Chicago Cardinals tackle Stan Mauldin died of heart attacks after games. Sparks died in 1954 three hours after a game, while Mauldin collapsed in the locker room in 1948.

I was watching that game.....omg!!! That is so sad. They carted him off of the field and all. I was just thinking that he screwed up it pretty bad.....at the worst I was thinking kind of like Rich Gannon screwed up his neck. Oh man, this is so sad.

I'm very sorry this happened and I pray his family will be okay.
Last week I was doing camera for a lacrosse game at the Navel Academy. At the end of the 1st quarter Scottie Boyal a long time lax official collapsed and died on the field from a heart attack. It shows that death is never really that far away. We should try and really enjoy life while we can.

This is real sad. This previous high school football season one of Hayfield Secondary's JV players sustained a neck injury by the name of Paul Hopkins. They did a whole story in the Washington Post and everything, and fortunately he's still alive... But hes paralyzed. After about six months or so of rehab he's back at our school but in a wheelchair. He was trying to make a tackle and his neck essentially got pushed into his shoulders. This is kind of something that strikes hard to home, so my condolences go out to this guys family and friends.

He was trying to make a tackle and his neck essentially got pushed into his shoulders.
A similar tackle ended the career, and almost the life, of Mike Bass, who was a great CB with Pat Fischer.
Bass lowered his head and made an almost perfect tackle, except that the runner's driving knee hit Bass square in the top of the helmet. Bass was paralyzed, carted off, and only regained motion the next day.
Doctors called it a "jammed neck", and warned that Bass could be killed or permanently disabled if he played again.

I can only take solace in the fact Al Lucas died doing what he loved.
You just never know.
