Drafting corner in the first round will be stupid...I want someone to name me a corner that was successful in his first year that was a first round pick...i can name some unsuccessfull ones( deangelo hall and dunta robinson)...if we draft a corner for some depth, thats a waste of a 9 pick because in a few years when they are good they may not want to be redskins...there is so much technique involved with player corner...dats the position I p[lay and your footwork has to B perfect...to go from college to pro is very hard, so I say we draft best playa there and get acorner 2nd roudn or jut use walt harris(who GW likes) or we trade down

Actually Dunta Robinson played real well last season and DeAngelo Hall was injured the majority of the season... Just two years ago a guy by the name of Terence Newman had a great season, although his play really tailed off this season

Some guy named Champ! Of course there aren't any CB in this draft that are anywhere near the tallent level of Champ, Dunta, or DeAngelo. This draft really has very little top 10 type tallent. That is why very few teams want to trade up!

Darrell Green (28th)
Champ Bailey (7th)
Deion Sanders (1st)
Charles Woodson (1st)
Dale Carter (?)
Woodson and Carter were both Rookies of the Year.

Did you even watch Football last year?
Daunta did great and even though DHall was injured, in like the few games he played he shut guys down.
And other recent CB (Newman and Trufant) both played exceptionally well in their Rookie years.

What does that have anything to do with them being a CB?
That can happen with any #9 pick.

I think Wr's and Te is a bigger need and our corners we have are pretty good. That is why I would go with Williamson, Miller, or Williams.

We dont need Williamson, all he is is (not a typo) a speed WR.
We already have speed in Patten and Moss (if he shows up)
The only WR we need is a BIG POSSESION guy, like Darnerian McCants.

I'd rather see us go after Shawn Merriman, but I won't be uspet if we draft a corner at number 9. We need more CB's. Right now we only have four! Springs, Harris, Wilds, Jimoh...am I missing anyone. You can say that Corner's are devalued, but a cover corner is still a huge asset for a defense. If we don't draft one at number 9 then we will get one in a later round. I'd be real surprised to see us go into the season with only the four guys above. I think that those guys are OK, but I'd like to see a younger talented guy in our back field.

I did watch fball when i meant dunta robinson i meant he hard a hard time transitioning...he was a first corner on a weak defense and he would be no better than a 2nd corner behind springs...his first few games he was getting burnt

I like McCants, i hope he gets more playing time. I think we have another corner but i'm not sure of his name.

Rufus Brown is who you are thinking of, I believe.

Yea. People say they like Wilds too, I feel the 9th pick is a waste if we take the draft. I think we need to take an impact player because we'll be giving him that money anyways.

If we come out of this draft with Matt Jones and Heath Miller and find a replacement for Dockery (or someone to frighten him), we'll beat the igglies, even with Harris and no real three down pass rusher. That is, if Gibbs lets Miller and Jones rise from the pine.

Forget Matt Jones, he is a moron.

Since many of us (including myself) seem to think that the Skins should do their best to get Mike Williams, I though it would be interesting to note that many wide receivers selected in the top ten picks of the first round become busts. Consider these top ten picks over the last 15 years:
Desmond Howard
Michael Westbrook
J.J. Stokes
Reggie Williams
David Terrell
Peter Warrick
Travis Taylor
Just because Williams and Edwards seem like sure things doesn't mean they are. It's as much luck as anything else, no matter what Mel Kiper and those guys say.

What's the other side of the picture though? How many have been really successful?

Also, I'd be willing to bet that the numbers hold true for all positions and not just Wide Receivers.

Arguably elite top ten pick receivers over the last 15 years:
Torry Holt
Keyshawn Johnson
In my opinion, Torry Holt is the only truly elite receiver of the two. It's probably too early to put Andre Johnson, Roy Williams and Larry Fitzgerald on the list, but they've been exceptional so far. There are several other mediocre and/or problematic receivers that have been selected top ten, such as Joey Galloway, Terry Glenn, David Boston, Plaxico Burres, Ike Hilliard, Koren Robinson, etc. Also, in 1988, Tim Brown and Sterling Sharpe were selected to ten.

Maybe so, particularly with the quarterback position. For some reason, with the exception of rarities such as Ki-Jana Carter, most top ten running back selections, such as Edgerrin James, Marshall Faulk, LaDanian Tomlinson, Jamal Lewis, Fred Taylor, Jerome Bettis and Barry Sanders ('89) become top shelf NFL players. As for the other positions, I'll let someone else tell me because I don't have the time to research it.

Thank you! This is why mortgaging the future (trading up) to get M. Williams is such a mistake.
As for other postion bing bust. DT's and WR's in particular seem to be the biggest busts. CB's and RB usually live up to thier hype.

Drafting a corner top 10 is a mistake.
Bill Parcells claimed that given the emphasis on PI and illegal contact, corners simply can't be "shutdown" types any longer. I agree. The best in the business weren't burned repeatedly last year and it's not going to get any better in the short term.

I completely disagree. To me this make it more important to have a good corner....but you need the right type of corner. I think the days of the big bruising CB are gone, but a fast corner with recovery speed and great athleticism is still very valuable to a defense.
I'm not trying to say that I think I know more than Bill Parcells, but that statement is flawed. So, what would Parcells have a GM do? Completely ignore the secondary? Put five linebackers on the field and two safeties?
The game is changed by the rules emphasis, and more corner's will be burned. Still, its a matter of degree. The stregth of our defense last year was our secondary which stuck to receivers like glue despite the rules change, and despite the absence of Champ. Perhaps Smoot played even better under the rules change due to his lack of size.

chad...If what your sayin is right, then we should get pac man becasue he is said to hav 4.2 speed and great pure cover skills...and is small

I'd personally rather draft Shawn Merriman because I think he will be a beast and because it takes something away from the Cowgirls. But my second choice would be Pac-Man Jones. I'd rather concentrate on both lines, but I also think that we have to pick up another corner after the debacle we had last year with inuries in the secondary.
By the way, its not that being small is a positive attribute, but I think that the new rules mostly affect the less agile, and slower corners. These guys are usually seen as the more physical corners. Still height and a big jump is always a plus.

If its too early to put Andre Johnson and Larry Fitz. as stars, then its too early to put Reggie Williams as a bust.
And WR, isnt the only bust posistion.
Id probably say there have been more QB and DE/DL busts in the top 10.
