This guy would be great for goal line situations. He's not even listed on any draft sites but he's 6'1 266... http://www.hawaiiathletics.com/Player/p ... &aid=12586

I saw Ladell Betts gain 10+ yards on plenty of 3rd and ones...same with Portis (previous 2 years).

You don't need a "short yardage back" wasting a roster space if you can get your O-line blocking with dominance.

If you ask me, Rabach is the answer to our short yard gain problem from last season.

Yeah, I think short yards are gained by the O-line. I mean Clinton has great vision so if the line could open a whole for him, he could find it and squeeze right through.

And if you remeber from last year, the reason we sucked at goal line was because with Brunell back there they knew we would run so the blitzed everyone.
But then when Ramsey was behind center, he could dump it off the Cooley or Royal so I bet next year are goal line situation will improve.

His name is West Keliikipi, so he is not allowed considering we got rid of Ohalete so we could pronouce everyone's name. He was so great during the season you'd sometimes see 5'6 scat back Michael Brewster in sort yardage.

I'll take Ladell Betts.

Betts can get the job done.

I agree with the earlier post that short yardage situations depends more on the offensive line. Why not trade down from the #9 pick, pick up a 2nd round pick and go after David Bass from Michigan (a John Jansen clone). Then in the 3rd round look for J.J. Arrington or Marion Barber III. With a solid O-line a shifty back may be more effective then a big pounding one. And if you team one of those guys up with Portis defenses won't know which side to defend.

Do you realize you kind of contradicted yourself within seconds?

A shifty back? As in Portis?
Look, no running back is needed..PERIOD.
We already have one of the most explosive RB's in the league, Portis. Backing him up is Betts who had a fire lit under his ass when Portis came in and he finally showed his skills last season. Then there is Rock Cartright, bigger guy that has had 100 yard games in the NFL...then there is Chad Morton who is a typical 3rd down back if he is not cut...then there is John Simon who was on IR last season.

Why waste a precious draft pick on a RB?

It is the O-line..and maybe some play calling issues that Gibbs has hopefully worked out over the offseason. If Rabach, Dockery, and Thomas can open the inside holes then Gibbs himself could be the goaline back.

You've got to realize that Gibbs uses mid-late round draft picks on linemen and role players. Honestly, I am not worried at all about RB. Portis is a beast, and I think we will see a lot more from Betts soon. It's all about the blocking.

PS, I've watched Portis since his rookie season...after the 5th week of the season until he was traded, he was the goaline back in Denver. He gets real low and squeezes through holes. Just cause he's not as fat as Bettis doen't mean he can't gain 3 yards in the redzone.

I couldn't agree more. We DONT NEED ANOTHER RB!!! What we need is for the passing game to take some pressure off the o-line by compelting some plays and forcing the D to respect the pass and not stack 8 guys on the line. If the o-line can actually open some holes then we'll be very good in short yardage situations. Last year in short yardage situations Portis wasn't even able to get to the line of scrimmage most of the time because he was being hit in the backfield. New additions to the line, having Jansen back healthy, Gibbs tweaking his play calling, and hopefully a more effective passing game should allow Portis to convert more short yardage plays, and as a result, score more td's.

My point is that there are a number of good college running backs that will be avialble in the mid rounds in this draft. If you want to focus on upgrading the passing game, that's fine. But beyond Edwards and Williams there are not many top-notch wide receivers in this draft. The skins should be focusing on stockpiling talented players at each position. For a franchise that has consistently gone 8-8 to 6-10 the past few years, more is needed than just some tweaking. If Portis gets hurt, is anyone confident with Betts and Cartwright as the backs? Look at New England, they have Dillon, Pass, Faulk, and Cobbs, all great college running backs. The Redskins should do the same.
