Agent: Jags' Garrard expects to return

David Garrard expects to spend a fourth -- and most likely final -- season as the Jaguars' backup quarterback after his recent attempts to work out a trade fell through because of the team's asking price.
Garrard's agent, Albert Irby, said Tuesday that he doesn't foresee a trade because the Jaguars want a first-round draft pick in return.
The Jaguars last month granted Irby permission to facilitate a trade, and Arizona, San Francisco, Chicago and Cleveland contacted him about a possible deal. But all four teams balked at the Jaguars' asking price and filled their quarterback openings with veteran free agents.
"They all thought what Jacksonville was asking for was a little much,'' Irby said. "Both David and I knew there was no way we were going to get a deal done because of that [demand], but that asking price shows the Jaguars really didn't want to trade him.''
Jaguars senior vice president Paul Vance declined comment Tuesday on the team's demands for Garrard, who is Byron Leftwich's primary backup.
The Jaguars are open to trading Garrard, who is 6 feet 1, 244 pounds, because his contract expires after the upcoming season, making him an unrestricted free agent. As a result, the Jaguars risk losing Garrard with no compensation next winter.
But Irby said he was told by NFL executives that the Jaguars want to keep Garrard because they are intent on making the playoffs this season and feel a quality backup quarterback is vital to that quest.
Garrard, 27, has appeared in just 10 regular-season games in his three-year NFL career, starting three.

Smart for the Jags if they want him around for another year, if not he's maybe worth a 3rd pick...2nd might be pushing it.

I don't think it's ever smart to ask for something exhorbitant, it just makes all of your coming negotiations more difficult.
A first rounder for Garrard is a freakshow.
Why not just tell him that you're not willing to trade him because you don't want to lose him... might be a little better for the player in question if you ask me. Now you're just likely left with a somewhat disgruntled backup QB and a front office that look like extortionists.

I guess I can see Mark's point, but my two cents jingles like some of the other coinage here.
It's essentially putting a franchise tag on the guy without having to do it.
Could this also be some Machiavellian way of shining up this guy so as to make some other witless (and I do emphasize the word "witless") club into thinking that this guy is maybe WORTH the pick ? Probably not. All you'd have to do is look at the film that doesn't exist on him.
I have to tell you, I've never really heard of him. That, alone, is reason enough to hold on to the pick.

That pretty much negates any chance of a really stupid team offering a first round pick. They may love the guy, but I bet they'd take that pick if it was offered.

He'd be awesomer for you guys. Snyder should totally do this deal. Then give him a huge contract.

If I recall, Garrard was a monster in college (East Carolina, I think). He was billed as a Vick clone, in a LB's body. The Jags may not be all that crazy in their asking price. He might not be displacing Leftwich yet, but he could definitely make it on a different team.
