Redskins to Attempt To Acquire Brown After His Release

By Nunyo Demasio

The Washington Redskins intend to pursue Courtney Brown, the talented yet oft-injured defensive end who is expected to be released today by the Cleveland Browns, according to sources familiar with the situation.

According to reports, Cleveland has informed Brown, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2000 draft, that he will be released today, making him an unrestricted free agent, after he declined a substantial pay cut. While a teammate of Redskins linebacker LaVar Arrington at Penn State, Brown broke the school record for career sacks. But he has finished his last four seasons on injured reserve.

According to sources, Brown believes that the Redskins would be a good fit partly because of Gregg Williams, the team's assistant head coach-defense, and defensive coordinator Greg Blache, who has a reputation for developing defensive linemen. Brown's Los Angeles-based agent, Marvin Demoff, also represents Williams.

Demoff, who once represented Coach Joe Gibbs, did not return calls yesterday. According to one source who has spoken to Brown, he will make free agent visits starting tomorrow and will leave all options open.

Last week, Gibbs indicated that Washington would monitor released players to fill remaining needs.

Last night, Vice President of Football Operations Vinny Cerrato declined to comment on Brown, noting the NFL's tampering rules regarding players under contract. But, Cerrato said, "anybody that comes across the wire, we will evaluate and investigate."

Although the Redskins are expected to keep their pursuit of free agents to a minimum, the club is seeking a pass rush specialist. And Brown, a 6-foot-4, 290-pound defensive end, would be a strong candidate. (Renaldo Wynn is Washington's left defensive end, but Williams is known for frequently rotating players.)

Last season, the Redskins had 40 sacks -- tied for second in the NFC -- while the defensive line performed surprisingly well for the league's third-ranked defense. But Washington's pass rush was largely generated by Williams sending his linebackers and cornerbacks on blitzes. (Only 14 of Washington's sacks were by defensive linemen, led by tackle Cornelius Griffin's six.)

Washington's chances of landing Brown are likely to come down to how much the club feels it can spend on a player who has missed 33 games over the past four seasons. Last year, in Week 2 at the Dallas Cowboys, Brown tore a Lisfranc ligament in his left foot and underwent season-ending surgery. In 47 games, Brown has 136 tackles, 17 sacks and 7 forced fumbles.

Brown was scheduled to receive a $2.5 million roster bonus tomorrow plus a base salary in 2005 of $.5.5 million. Brown reportedly rebuffed Cleveland's suggestion that he restructure to earn an average salary of $2 million. The offer likely will remain on the table, sources said, meaning that the Redskins must at least match it.

One benefit of losing cornerback Fred Smoot is that Washington suddenly has financial flexibility and is $2.1 million under the salary cap. (The Redskins will jump to about $4 million after an expected trade of wide receiver Rod Gardner for a draft pick.)

But the Redskins must determine the risk of signing a player whose NFL career has been riddled by ankle, elbow, knee and neck injuries: In 2001, Brown missed 11 games with knee and ankle injuries. In 2002, he suffered a knee injury and underwent microfracture surgery. In 2003, Brown tore his right biceps. And, before last season was cut short, Brown was forced to undergo arthroscopic surgery in February 2004.

Brown has earned $26 million in five NFL seasons. Waiving him will save Cleveland $5 million under the cap.

Arrington was chosen second overall in the 2000 draft, followed by left tackle Chris Samuels. If Brown were to join Washington, the Redskins would have the top three players from the 2000 class.

According to a club source, if Arrington had been selected No. 1 that year, the Redskins likely would have chosen Brown with one of the next two picks.

I know there was already a thread started on Brown, but I thought this was kind of important so it deserved its own thread. Or does it not deserve a new thread? I don't know...but the Redskins are indeed interested in him, I'm kinda excited!

Why would we tell people who we're going after?

This is stupid, we should keep tight lipped about who we pursue in free agency, no good can come of it.

This signing would be great if it were to happen. Courtney Brown has not produced huge numbers as of yet but he has a lot of potential.

I hope he does not cost a lot if we do sign him because I think the Redskins have played it smart this offseason plus the guy has been injured most of his career so he should not expect a lot of money thrown his way.

Keep in mind that before this year Jevon Kearse was always hurt, but a change in scenery seemed to keep him healthy. So lets hope it is the same deal with Brown if we get him.

I am all for it. As long as they don't overpay. Give him incentives though.

Williams could help restore his career.
We could then focus on WR, CB and LB in the draft.

I originally posted that I don't want Brown. I still don't. But if the coaches see potential in him, then I'll go along with it. I am very worried about his injury history and udnerachieving. I see this as "Darrell Russell: Part 2" but if we sign him, I hope he proves me wrong.

I think if we sign him and draft a corner, pac man or antrell, we might have a better chance of scoring points with our defense on the field than with our O. Just think how many games we would have one if it wasnt for the other team scoring defensive tds... ahhh man Brunnell brings up bad memories, I dont even think Danny Waffle was that bad.
However, I dont know if I believe in number 1 picks from the Browns. Courtny would be in the same category as good old Couch.

So was Springs and look how he turned out playeing for our beloved Skins.

I was never a big fan of Brown's. I'm here in Ohio and have many Browns fans for friends. My best friend is still kicking himself everytime he thinks that Clevelland could've had LaVar and instead got this injury prone DE. I admit on draft day that year, I didn't really care which one we got, but it sure seems like it's been better for us so far.

If Brown comes cheap, I say pull the trigger.

So young. So cynical. Maybe instead of Darrell Russell he'll be Daryl Gardener Part II. At least we got one good year out of him and it cost nothing when he left.

At any rate, I wouldn't get your hopes up for this one. A lot's been made of the fact that Brown and Lavar played together in college, but that doesn't necessarily make them friends. Besides, he's got a standing offer of at least $2 million in Cleveland and the most the Redskins can (or should) offer him right now is $2.1 million. I don't see him leaving the Browns over $100,000.

You know, he is about as good as anyone when it comes to physical ability, Gregg might be able to use him.

If Cleveland releases him and he's an UNrestricted free agent, it doesn't matter what Cleveland's offered him. He can sign whereever he wants. Why would he want to stay with Cleveland after they released him because he wouldn't take a paycut. I think he's leaving Cleveland no matter what. I can very easily see him coming here to play with LaVar for $100,000 more...maybe even less.

I love this move. He's young, he's talented, and he wont cost an arm and a leg.

Let's bring him in here and see what he can do playing in a great scheme for a competent coaching staff.

I also recently said that I don't want Brown for numerous reasons, but if a player expresses a DESIRE to come be a Skin, and he is not greedy, then if coaches say good call, let'em work with GW,

i think everyone feels the same... great pick up... ONLY IF IT'S CHEAP or at a reasonable price... greg blache would have our d line "super" stong with him in there...

If Brown signs for the a resonable price than pick him up, the down side is he is injury prone. If he stays healthy than we will have added some depth on the d-line. Then we can draft a cb in this years draft.

This would be awesome if we can pick him up, If he stays healthy I think he could have a great season playing here in Greg Williams defense, Lets just hope he comes with an affordable price tag HTTR

He may just work for us here. CB and Lavar again, this will be fun to watch.

It would be a great pickup if like everybody say's it doesn't cost to much. I think a small bonus with vertern's minumum and lots of incentives would be reasonable.

he may stay healthy all season if he's being rotated with daniels et all....?

Like everyone else said, if he wants to be a Redskin, stays healthy, and doesnt expect a ridiculous amount of $$$$. It would be a good move.

This is interesting though - things have been a bit quiet and I logged on to see if there was anything on the Gardener trade. This is definitely interesting but his medical history is worrying. Particularly after our experiences last season with Barrow.

It's probably not the Redskins who said anything. Most likely, Courtney's agent has spread the word that Snyder the spender is interested in an effort to increase his "value" around the league. I believe a number of agents have done that recently... start rumors that the 'skins are interested in order to up the ante.

In this case, though, I suspect it's true. If the injury problems can be made to go away, Brown is as talented as they come.

Oh... and "BillyKilmers Spiral"... now THAT is funny!

Yes, my cousin is a sports agent (he just negotiated the free agent deal for Lamont Jordan with the Oakland Raiders) He has a small firm and says that alot of those 'sources' are just agents trying to generate market interest...good point...

I agree with you. I think if he is kept on a rotation it would definatley give him a better chance of staying healthy. I think he would rotate with Renaldo Wynn though rather than Daniels. Of course Wynn and Brown on passing situations would be a good rush from the ends. I like it, if as Bob Barker says, the price is right.

THE NEWS

If the Browns release defensive end Courtney Brown on Monday as expected, the Redskins are planning to make a contract offer to the former No. 1 overall pick, according to the Washington Post. Brown is said to be interested in playing for the Skins due to his friendship with linebacker LaVar Arrington. Brown and Arrington were teammates at Penn State.

OUR VIEW

Skins' assistant head coach Gregg Williams has a reputation for developing defensive linemen, which is also attractive to Brown. Courtney has been a bust since the Browns selected him with the No. 1 overall
