Courtney Brown came under discussion in a trading Garnder thread. I think this topic deserves a thread of its own.
I would love to give him a chance. I know he has a bad injury history but perhaps we should take a chance on him.

Boss did you find out anything regarding C. Brown's contract with the Browns?

Being a number 1 overall pick. Brown will not be had on the cheap by anyone. With the tight cap that the Skins have, it is almost a certainty that the Skins could not out bid the other teams interested in him. The outside shot would be having Brown come in on 1 year deal to reestablish his rep. He knows the Skins will have at least a top ten D this year and playing alongside LaVar again could be the spark he needs to revive his career. All big ifs and conjecture but hey I can dream can't I?

I definatly think it would be a nice gamble. I dont think he would be as expensive as one might think. With the problems he's had and his lack of productivity since being the #1 overall pick there would be no leverage when it would come to him commanding a lucrative contract. Greg Williams would certainly bring the best out of him as well.

The market determines the player's value. If he is released, he'll go to the highest bidder. If he is traded, we have to eat his base salary, or renegotiate.

Straight from the NFLPA...for all of you Courtney Brown lovers, the amount owed on his 2005 contract is 5.5 million dollars...for a guy who has averaged less than 4 sacks a year and has already torn a knee ligament? I like the thought...god knows he's better than Reyaldo Wynn..but we can get more value than him...

1.) There is already a thread about this in Around the League...

2.) Brown wouldn't cost nearly that much, most of mis money is in bonuses that Cleveland would eat... we can either trade for Brown or wait until Cleveland releses him and he'll come at a much more reasonable price. For all intents and purposes, ignore his current contract, it's a total non issue.

He is owed 2.5 million in base pay...this year and 5.5 million next year...if you think that is a 'non issue' then telll me the secret.

A.) The Browns will probably release him, thus giving us a blank slate to try and sign him.

B.) If we were to trade him for Rod Gardner, we would work about an extention before the deal was completed, this would be a renegotiation on his contract and be a much different figure that 5.5 million next season.

What about our draft picks? Do you really think it is worth signing an underacheiving DE coming off of a serious injury? His veteran minimum is still a high number assuming that he took the minimum. The earlier posts were regarding a trade scenario between us and the Browns, but under your scenario we would have to pay market value for what he is offered from other teams. IMO I just don't think it is wise financially. Even before his injury he was a severe underacheiver on a bad team. He is a decend DE, but we don't quite know what we have in Daniels, and were still ranked very high...Romeo Crennel is a Defensive Guru and even he thinks he is dispensable.

You don't think that Brown might take a little less to play with Lavar Arrington (his pal from PSU), on the 3rd best defense in the league and with Gregg Williams as his DC?

If not, I'm not worried, but it might be nice to have a physical freak like Brown for Williams to work with... a guy with Brown's speed at 6'4'' 290 is near imposible, he could get a cape and fight crime with his physical tools!!!

I think he's worth taking a serious, SERIOUS look at, if the numbers don't match up, then the numbers don't match up... but I think we have a good shot at him.

He is owed a roster bonus on March 15th and he will be cut on the 14th. This will void that contract and he will have to reach agreement on a new deal.

He'll go to the highest bidder or will resign for less money with the Browns

Physically he is definitely a freak...but the stats don't lie...he just has not been productive and he has been injured...we already have a physically gifted but injured DE...i just don't think we need another. I don't know if he would take less money to play for the Skins, in this day and time that would be a wonderful thought...and if he did that would show a lot of character and dedication that would make me change my mind... but i really think if he is cut, his market value is going to be much higher than he is worth.

I liked him at Penn State, but I think the Skins are looking to build a team more so through the draft...there could be promising yound DE's there who develop like Darren Howard did. There are about 5 pretty good D-Linemen in the draft, and some great potential.

Merriman, James, Pollack, Matt Roth, Spears, Demarcus Ware, Chris Canty...i think a guy like that or chris canty in the thrid round is a better risk.

Less money...more potential for a star being born and developed, than recycled.

Why was this moved??? It says under Around the League that it is for talk for "anything football that has no Redskin relevance." Well Brown potentially coming to the Redskins is relevant to the Redskins isn't it? What exactly merits placing a post in Hogwash or Around the League? It seemed an appropriate post to me.

Moss was mentioned several times while he was a Jet. What about that Darren Sharper thread or Davenport. Courtney Brown belongs in Hogwash darn it. It is Redskin relevant!!!

Whose to determine whether its a viable possibility or not. The Browns want Gardner. We need a DE. Hmmmm... sounds like a possibility to me! Plus the LaVAr connection. It has all the makings of a perfect Hogwash thread. And it appeared to be so until it was moved.

I say the Skins sign him Monday afternoon. At a reasonable price of course.
No trade necesary!

This guy wants a legit shot at starting over his career, and Greg Williams/Arrington are 2 reasons why he might succeed in Washington.

CLEVELAND -- Injury-plagued defensive end Courtney Brown will be released on Monday by the Cleveland Browns if the club is unable to restructure the former No. 1 overall draft pick's contract.

Brown, who missed the final 14 games last season after undergoing foot surgery, is due a $2.5 million roster bonus on Tuesday.

The Browns may still re-sign Brown, who has missed 33 games with injuries the past four seasons. Team president John Collins said Saturday that the club will continue talks this weekend with agent Marvin Demoff about redoing Brown's contract.

"If we get past Tuesday, Courtney may want to talk to and visit some other teams," Collins said. "But I think there's still a chance he'll come back to the Browns."

Collins said Brown has met several times with new Cleveland coach Romeo Crennel and seems excited about his possible role with the Browns. Last month, Brown said he'd be willing to move to linebacker in the team's 3-4 defensive scheme.

Browns general manager Phil Savage told The Plain Dealer that he'll discuss the team's plans with Brown on Monday. He would like to retain Brown.

"We want to make sure Courtney understands this is something that we have to do, not something we want to do," Savage told the newspaper.

Injuries have severely limited Brown's playing time and production as a pass-rusher. He has played in only 47 games during his five seasons and has totaled just 17 sacks. His injuries have included a torn knee ligament, a high ankle sprain, microfracture knee surgery and a ruptured right biceps tendon.

In Week 2 last season at Dallas, Brown tore a ligament in his foot and was done for the year. He only recently had screws removed following surgery, but at an awards banquet last month the soft-spoken Brown said he wanted to keep playing.

If the 26-year-old is released, he will be the third underachieving first-round draft pick cut loose by the Browns in the past eight months.

Before last season, the Browns released quarterback Tim Couch, the expansion team's No. 1 pick in 1999. Defensive tackle Gerard Warren, the No. 3 pick in 2001, was traded to Denver this month for a fourth-round draft choice.

Cleveland also is looking to trade running back William Green, the team's first-round selection, 16th overall, in the 2002 draft.
