I was looking around some Redskin stats today, and I stumbled on to something... Joe once lead the NFL in receptions one season. Was he once a WR for the Baltimore Colts and transferred to RB for the Redskins?

I don't remember him ever playing WR. I thought he caught all those ball out of the backfield ala Larry Centers.

It may just be his receiving stats.

Joe Washington did it all. I seem to remember that he threw a few touchdown passes (as a Colt).
To answer your question, no...he wasn't strictly a WR (think "Brian Mitchell"), but he did have 82 receptions in '79 which got him into the Pro Bowl and gave him the league lead.
Gibbs loved that about him, and gave up the top second round pick in the '82 draft.
That's okay. We got Vernon Dean anyway.

Joe W. was a "core" Skin in the days that such a term TRULY meant something. he provided the team with options no other payer could provide.

I thought he was always a rb. He did not like the way he was being used in the Colts offense and the Skins used him as a change of pace rb from the pounding of Riggins they switched it up with the quicks of a Joe Washington. He had awesome receiving skills that allowed him to catch a lot of balls . He had hands as soft as butterscotch pudding!!!

He came to my High School for some kind of speech and raced the fastest kid on our football team. He blew him away and I don't think I've ever seen someone run that fast

My favorite memory of Joe Washington was when he went beserk in the fourth quarter of the 1983 Oakland Raider game. He was all over the field as we scored 17 points in the final 7 minutes to win 37-35 or something like that.

Tom Landry was right when he said "Washington isn't Washington without Washington."

I remember him as strictly a running back, both with the Redskins and the Colts.

That is one of my all-time favorite games. The best comeback by a 'Skins team that I ever witnessed.

In '79, he caught 82 passes, but also ran for 884 yards. He had similar seasons in '78, 81, and '83. We tend to remember '83 as the year Riggins crushed everyone (except the Raiders in SB 18), but Washington gained 772 yards rushing, and caught 42 passes.

Explosive.

There is a guy I saw at the combine who reminded me of Joe Washington...he is a more powerful version though, and I think his name was Sproles (or something like that)...
