Garnell Wilds

I have been hearing all sorts of talk on how this guy is going to replace Smoot, but I saw every play this year and I can't think of one play he made

I guess if Williams sees something in him then I have to believe him, but if we lose Smoot (which we probably will) shouldn't we draft a CB like maybe Antrel Rolle (nothing wrong with more Miami guys) is there any othe rookie CB worth taking that I don't know about?

I think we should definitely sign ARolle if we do lose FSmoot. (which seems VERY likely these days)

About GWilds......didn't you watch all the skin games? He DID play in some of them and when the ball came towards him...I thought I saw some sparks of a pretty good CB. If GWilliams believes in him, I certainly do also.

I saw all the games and I guess he just didn't stand out

Well of course he didn't stand out. He was a 3rd of a 4th CB. He really didn't have too many balls thrown his way. But almost every play...he seemed like he could really change the pace of the game. It was like seeing STaylor on our T.V screens. You know something's going to happen!

I don't know. I like this guy and I think he could be a decent CB with some practice. But, I guess your're right....he didn't have INTS, forced fumbles, recoveries.......if you look at it that way.

Well, if G. Williams thinks that he is fine with Springs, Harris, Wilds and Jimoh then I'll just have to trust him. I would like to see us draft Pac Man Jones over Antre Rolle. I tend to think that if his last name wasn't Rolle he wouldn't be gettin so much hype. Plus Jones is a good bit faster.

If we end up drafting a corner and bolstering both O and D lines I'll be more than happy. I'll be happy even if we don't draft a conrner. In fact given the success our coaches had at last years draft....while Gibbs was still rusty....I'll trust what ever they do.

"not standing out" is not a bad thing for a CB. sure, it means he didn't make any flashy interceptions. but it also means he didn't get burned for a 50 yard touchdown.

he "didn't stand out" when he was covering randy moss in the season finale... because moss only caught 5 passes for 66 yards.

Who was covering Randy Moss during the last game of the season? Sean Taylor covered him some, but who else did? Smoot was out during that game and Springs saw limited action if I remember correctly. Our defense did very well in shutting down the Vikes high power offense and passing game.

NO that would be stupid because Mike Williams will be around.

At least Gregg Williams has some faith in his players and doesn't feel the need to completely overhaul the defense.

Yeah can you say Jimoh? (Gym-O?) :P

Also, I am actually surprised that Freddy is not drawing more attention as a FA. I'm sure he has shopped his skills to other teams, but based on what Samari Rolle signed for ($11 mill), I just don't see the $12-14 million signing bonus happening for Fred. I hope he seriously considers the fact that Springs signed for $10 mill. as a former Probowler. I think Freddy is just a hair below that level but he can most definatly get to Hawaii with another solid season on a defense that is gonna flat out dominate. Garnell Wilds will be another Antonio, Clark, Salavea, etc. A solid football player that will benefit from an agressive defensive scheme run but a top notch coaching staff.

wasn't Wilds the guy that got burnt on the last TD in the second cowboys game... ???

I am really not sure... but i seem to think it was him... that was a combination of Wilds letting him go and ST not getting over in cover 2.....

all the articles i'm reading to check on that say that it was SPRINGS who got burned for the TD. man that sucks. i wonder what he could possibly have been thinking.

It was Ade Jimoh, he bit off the run fake and stoped covering his man and he got burned. I tivo'd it. Also Shawn Taylor was burned on that play also. They we're double covering.

No, it was definetly Springs and Taylor. Ultimately it was two factors which led to that game being lost.

The first was that we had only two healthy active Corners...meaning that we couldn't even go to a nickle defense. So while the Cowgirls put out 4 wides we stayed in our base defense.

The other was a rookie mistake by Taylor. He was supposed to cover overtop and stop the deep pass. Which is why Springs let the WR go by him. Instead Taylor was so focused on Keyshawn that he ignored the deep receiver until it was too late.

those of you who say that Wilds will be a good replacement for Smoot and give the fact that he stood in for him in the Vikings Game for a reason are apparently forgetting how important CB is

this year we blitzed more than any team could and why do you think that was.....because Smoot and Springs were holding it down

we have no D-LINE pass rush so we have to blitz and w/o Smoot that is going to be tough

I love Mike Williams just as much as the next guy but he is going to be real expensive and I don't want a holdout this year

Anyway Wilds got a little help from Taylor that game I would say I don't think that he was hung out to dry

Why would any of the variables you mentioned changed just because Wilds is in the game?

Would our lack of pass rush get any worse this year? No
Would Taylor stop giving him help? No

Our pass rushing is going to improve.
Taylor is going to improve.
Wilds is going to improve.
Williams is going to improve.

Why not put Wilds in?! This is the same thinking IMO that Snyder has been guilty of. The thinking is that we NEVER have anyone good enough to fill shoes and we ALWAYS have to look elsewhere. That KILLS the spirits of the players. Gregg Williams PROVED to us that he can make an average player a star. Is that going to stop also this season?

Chris Luva is right, Wilds is gona get better...did any of yall see the man lay when he was at VT, no one ever talk about that but he was a great int man at VT, I also looked up somewhere that this guy has a 40 inch vertical, he also is noted to have a good work ethic and plays special teams

I just hope Jimoh isn't on the team again - he made some special teams plays, but my stomach turns when he comes in the game at DB.

I will say one thing in Jimoh's defense... He did better this year than most of us thought he would.

... a LOT better than I thought he would. Then again, I was prepared to sign him at Towel Boy after '03. Not sure how much we're saying here. :0)

I am a big hokie fan so I remember watching wilds in college, however he was only the third best corner at any time at VT. He played opposite D Hall and Eric Green both I would rather have at corner than Wilds, however he did benefit from being the player other teams would challenge. Kind of like a smoot. I think he will be a good contributor but not a starter.

No disrespect but this is the type of reasoning that has is so far in debt. We never take the time to train people, or give them a fair chance. We have to take the more populer player, the better name, the highest pick at every position. Every corner on every time wasn't a 1st round pick who's starting.

That wasn't directed towards you entirely.
