Why Would Gibbs and Co. think it was ok to take a 5 mill cap hit ...now we have about 2 mill, come on we are closing the door on our own players Smoot being the big one...this makes me so mad. I have seen in some post that if we trade 50/50 we will get 2 mill, so maybe we will be around 4 mill. All and all Gibbs and Co. made a stupid trade.

Oh I get it! Hopefully Dan and Vinny keep this philosophy in mind every time one of our players says:

"Even though you're paying me $13 million, I'm not really happy playing here. You should let me keep the money you've paid me and allow me to go to another team. Oh, and sorry that you won't be able to afford to pay some other player because I've screwed up your cap situation."

We should just let him bounce, I guess. Because he's "not happy".

lol, it's how football works. It's not Coles' fault it's how the cap works.

Now that he's gone, let's concentrate on one of football's best deep threats (Moss) and our cannon armed QB (Ramsey) who will be dropping bombs into his opened arms. This of course after our stud running back (Portis) and our glue handed H-back (Cooley) cause the secondary to cheat towards the line with big runs and short catches.

As I've looked this deal over, there's only a couple of things that could make sense for making this happen:

1. The toe. The rumors say they wanted LC to get surgery, LC wasn't having it. That could have been part of their urgency.

2. Perhaps they wanted to bite the bullet now, knowing that cap difficulties may become more prevelant in the future and with the understanding that LC would continue to be unhappy here, they would take the cap hit this year to lessen the extent of the damage in future.

Those are the only two reasons I could envision as an impetus for this deal. Otherwise, I'm in total agreement with the majority of the board, I would have never given LC the idea that he was going to be released or traded, I would've done my best to work that issue out. Hey, I play Madden, and the only time I 'trade down' is to get more cap room, I don't do it to take a 7 million dollar cap hit...

This mess was caused by Coles and no one else. He was a cancer in the locker room and he didn't want to play for one of the best coaches ever. Under these circumstances Gibbs did the best he could in getting value for Coles.

Question...does the Cap hit also take place next season or does it all go into this season since he was gone before June 1st?

Should have made Coles stay. Even if he sat on the bench the cap situation would have been better.
Now we have to give another big contract to Moss or his feelings will be hurt and he won't feel appreciated. Maybe we can trade him to someone else and get killed by his signing bonus in two years.

I have to agree and say that this a stupid deal, If I recall correctly a week ago Coles was giving back his 5 mil signing bonus and pending the Jets restructuring his contract, Now we are giving in on the signing bonus, that could cost us our starting CB ???
The only cancer I see on this team besides Coles, is the biggest mistake in the 2nd Era BOONELL. I would take a 10 Mil Cap hit just to see him gone, and it wouldn't even cost that much.
MY HAT IS OFF TO GRUEDEN - he had pretty much the same situation with Me-Shawn, and what did he do, paid him for the rest of the season and told him not to come back. Let Coles sit at home and watch next year, he will be giving everything back the following year to get back in the league.

there is a poll on ESPN on who would you rather have at WR Coles or Moss, when i voted it was Coles 52.7%. Thats not that bad for us.

I don't think the trade was stupid. Look at some point we have to rectify the gross spending mistakes of the past few years. We would have to address these problems at some point, we have to get back to a team of continuity. Coles publicly did not want to be here, you can't have that on your team. Next year our cap situation will also be in better shape without him. We have to look beyond one year or else we will be on here each year cryin about losing players or having to purge the Roster ala The Titans this year. Keep in mind bros, we had Champ Bailey and Smoot, and still sucked. I just don't think losing Smoot would be the end of the world. Just like signing Deion did not guarantee us the best D. And just like Losing Champ, and Arrington last year, did not guarantee us a poor D. We can't get caught up in individuals when football is a team game. GO SKINS...

By the way, the NFL should push for changes in the Collective Bargaining Agreement that would change the way a player's salary owed counts against the cap. It is one thing to trade a player in the middle of his contract. But it doesn't seem right to charge the team the same way when that player demands a trade to the detriment of the team. He chose to leave, why should we have to pay his ticket.

Because final say falls with the team.

Coles didn't send himself to the Jets.

Technically, the 'Skins are obliged to honor the contract.

Umm Patrick Ramsey didn't want to play there last season and demanded a trade...i don't see anybody tourching this guys house....Why not?

Well I'm not going to argue with a Jets fan about it, but a lot of this has to do with your incorrect recollection of events or a refusal to believe anything except what you would like to. Patrick never demanded to be traded, in fact, Patrick was away on vacation in Florida fishing/hunting with Jon Jansen when LEN PASQUARELLI reported that HIS AGENT expressed that his client wouldn't be happy with the Brunell deal. In LP's article and subsequent rant about Ramsey wanting out, never once was there an actual quote from Patrick Ramsey.

And then both Gibbs and Ramsey publicly denied that Ramsey had ever told the organization that he wanted to be traded.
