How can Bledsoe sign a contract w/ Cowboys

I thought Free Agency did not start until March 2nd.
Whats up with that?
Does that mean we can go ahead and sign Derrick Mason today?

He was cut by the Bills a few days ago. He was then made a free agent by release, not by contract, therefore he was available to sign with anyone. So the Boys weren't tampering.
Yes, we can sign Mason (if we could afford him). He was cut, too.

Sure does. He is available at any time we want him.
I just went to CowboysGuide.com and most of them are not happy at all.
Dallas just signed a qb who Gregg Williams knows more about than anybody. He coached him for 2 years.
They better fix that O-line now. THIS GUY MAKES TESTAVERDE LOOK LIKE MIKE VICK.
Not to mention that he tied for the league's lead in Fumbles. Was tied for 26th in INT's thrown. And had the 2nd lowest passer rating among Qb's who started every game.
I actually used to sort of like Bledsoe.
Oh well, it will be fun trying to knock his chest off.

Jake, then why haven't any other teams moved on Mason yet?
Or any of the other players that were cut for salary cap purposes.
Are you guessing or do you know for sure?

Unless they get a ridiculous offer (which I'm very afraid Bledsloe did) or sign a hometown deal, cut players usually wait until FA actually starts to get a gauge of what the going price is.
There's talk that Rolle is close to a deal with Green Bay.

I guess Sportscenter's reporting that he got a 3 year deal with the 3rd voidable with only $2 million SB. $5 million a year.
I guess it was the hometown (or more accurately Parcells) discount and the promise to start that sealed the deal so early.
Even if he flames out or Henson just outshines him, eating $1 million in the second season isn't that bad.

Can't tell you why they haven't signed Mason. Maybe he and the teams are waiting for more cuts. Maybe he wants too much money for some teams.
I know for sure that teams are able to sign these guys right now. Their contract was voided before free agency, making them free agents at that given second. Free agency is MAINLY for players whose contracts run up on March 2nd. It just so happens that players who are available before then are still around to be signed.

Remember that players who are slated to become free agents do not do so until March 2. Until then, they remain under contract to their prior team. Bledsoe's situation is unique because he was officially released by the Bills on Feb 22 -- and immediately became a free agent. Thus, he did not have to wait until March 2, and the Cowboys were allowed to officially sign him on March 23. I'm not sure where you obtained the information that other players, like Derrick Mason, who are in similar situations to Bledsoe's, have to wait until March 2. I do not believe that is the case, as the NFL CBA states:
"Whenever a player who has finished the season in which his fourth year of credited service has been earned under the Bert Bell/Pete Rozelle Plan is placed on waivers between February 1 and the trading deadline, his contract will be considered terminated and the player will be completely free at any time thereafter to negotiate and sign a Player Contract with any Club, and any Club shall be completely free to negotiate and sign a Player Contract with such player, without penalty or restriction, including, but not limited to, Draft Choice Compensation between Clubs or First Refusal Rights of any kind, or any signing period."
Note that the Feb 1 date may apear misleading, since there was a freeze on releasing veterean free agents this year from the conclusion of the season through Feb 21, making Feb 22 the first day that teams could officially release veteran players.
Confusuing I know, but I hope this helps clear things up!

Part 2 (I asked..."Then why isn't anyone going after Mason and Rolle yet...if they are in the same situation as Bledsoe") :
Theoretically they could... The difference is that there will be a DEMAND for them, so they likely will have -- if they don't already -- multiple suitors.
Bledsoe was never going to find a better situation than what was presented to him by the Cowboys, where he will be the definite starter and will be reunited with Parcells. With not much of a genuine market for him, Bledsoe was willing to take what the Cowboys offered. Mason and Rolle are probably waiting for the Free Agent market to begin, so that they can watch the proverbial dominoes fall, as other players begin signing huge contracts.
With many teams fighting to get under the cap by March 1, the emphasis is still on cleaning house -- and not pursuing top dollar free agents. All of that will change come March 2. Mason, the most prolific wide receiver in the NFL last year with 90+ catches and Rolle, playing the premium CB position, know that they can command top dollar. So they are likely to take their time and converse with all suitors as they become available.

Nah, dude...I have asked like 20 people and you and commish are the only ones that gave an answer...everyone else just shrugged.
If this is the case I wonder why we haven't at least heard: "The Redskins have attempted to contact Mason but he is not talking to teams until Mar. 2nd"
Could Redskin One be waiting in Nashville???
