Gibbs and WRs in Draft

THE NEWS
Redskins' head coach Joe Gibbs said Tuesday during a radio show that he does not expect to sign any top free agent receivers, according to the Washington Post. Gibbs even went so far as to comment on wideouts Muhsin Muhammad and Plaxico Burress. "The problem is (Muhammad) is 31 [32], and basically what his agent said is: 'Show me the money,'" Gibbs said. "With him and Plaxico, what you're talking about is big bucks." Muhammad is still negotiating a new contract with the Panthers, while Burress will be a free agent in March.
OUR VIEW
The Redskins have a very good receiver in Laveranues Coles, who has topped the 1,200-yard mark twice in the last three seasons. The team could use a better No. 2 wideout, but finding offensive line help and improving the play of their quarterbacks will be bigger concerns during the offseason.

What does this have to do with the Draft?

I still hope we draft a stud like Williams.

I WOULD say that but those big names often don't lead to big results. But they might. We'll just have to see what they do.

GREAT!! I'm glad we're not getting either one of them, I'm all about young blood this year!!! I'm glad that O-line is main concern.

So does this mean that JGibbs would like to get a WR with the 9th pick? Look like he is hinting towards that...

From the call in show:
Gibbs said.....
"We would like to solve everything that we could on our football team in free agency," "That way you go into the draft and you're freewheeling."
So he may be looking at other WR in Free Agency

I-Hope-Not.
What we need at WR is already on the roster. We could use...well,
that's been covered ad nauseum in other threads.

#89 ? An average receiver. How is this an upgrade ?

Gibbs added that, although the wide receiving corps will undergo changes -- including the departure of Rod Gardner -- the Redskins are unlikely to land any elite free agents at the position because of salary demands.
Nonetheless, the Redskins will focus on acquiring players through free agency because of the uncertainty of the draft, to be held in late April.

Yeah.. Yeah... I knew I was gonna catch some flack for this... but the guys still young, big, quick.... and will probably come cheaper than Muhammad, Burress, or Mr. "O So Coveted" Mike Williams.... he's been in a piss-poor Brian Billick offense his entire career and plays with arguably the worst starting QB in the league... A change of scenery could spark him to rise to his potential... and if it doesn't... it's not gonna kill us in the wallet...
at worse... he'd still be better than Gardner...

This probally what the Ravens and other teams are saying about Gardener! Go spread this infectious disease in more forums.

My main wish is to improve the o-line first and foremost... That I believe is our biggest weakness... we've got a first rounder, 3 second rounders, and a third rounder on that oline and together... they all play like they we're all picked in the 5th round... Ramsey was sacked 53 times in his past 20 starts..... that's like 2.7 times he's sacked per game...... not including all the pressures and hurries...... that's just crazy coming from a line that's suppose to have some decent potential.....
2nd we need to take care of the CB position because Rod Tidwell is going bye-bye.... most likely anyways... hopefully I'm wrong...
then we can concentrate on WR.... I'm not interested in Burress nor Muhammad.... and Mike Williams sounds intriguing but we have no 2nd nor 5th round pick... so unless we secure the other positions through free-agency.... I can't see us just blowing the whole draft on a WR that's gonna want big bucks and then we get to keep our fingers crossed.
If we don't get Mr. Williams through the draft... then why not take a shot at Taylor? Gardner will be gone... and you could say that he's just like Gardner... except he's faster and doesn't drop as many balls... so therefore... he's an improvement... even if it's a small one... and a cheap improvement at that...
really all we needed from Gardner was a "small" improvement.... but he wasn't able to give us that...

I say bring back Derrius Thompson! I mean he's great! He's just had a really bad QB throwing to him down in Miami! Maybe having him come back will spark him to his true potential!
Sorry, I couldn't resist. I do agree about the o-line though. We need to get a new center at some point...or hope and pray that Raymer remembers how to block...

I am glad to hear him say that. There has been too much emphasis on getting a big name receiver when we should be looking for one that can get the job done without asking for a colossal amount of money. If Gibbs can find that receiver the team will be in much better shape. Besides I feel that the O-line needs more attention paid to it anyway. If we get better players for the O-line the offense will be able to perform more efficiently especially when it comes to passing.

Exactly.... and if he doesn't pan out... we could always get him to show some of the fans how to be funny ...

Being as big a fan as anyone of Mike Williams I still must say that I strongly agree with BringThePain. I see no down side to signing Taylor so long as we do not overpay. He too was an early first round pick and has a lot of potential. Playing in Baltimore certainly did not give him a chance to shine and he has the size we need.
I know a lot of people on this board thing D-Mac is the answer for us having a big reciever but I just don't see that happening. He did not get playing time for a reason last year and that reason was not because of how great our offense was playing. Regardless of what we see his role being, it seems like the coaching staff does not agree. I like developing in house talent as much as anyone but I don't think we have enough of it at this position and need to add someone - why not Taylor if looking to do so through a FA.
Muhammad and Burress I think will both demand too much money. A lot of people are high on Givens but he plays in a much more WR friendly offense than Taylor and we would have to give up a pick to sign him as well. Taylor is still young and has potential and we would lose nothing in signing him. I still hope for Williams but I'd settle for Taylor.

With Taylor Jacobs already on board, and getting better; Thrash being loved by the club, staff and fans; Coles playing on guts and maybe needing a doc to fix his toe... I don't see a former Spurrier kid as the answer.
For me, it's Mike Williams, or Mike Williams, or maybe... Mike Williams. If not - trade down and get some talent later.

Taylor Jacobs is a former Spurrier kid.... :-"
I was just saying if we got to replace Gardner... then TT is a "little" better than him... and then we won't need that 9th overall pick so bad...
like I said... if we can take care of everything else before the draft... then I'm game for Williams at #9 too.... but only if we've secured everything else....

Yes , IF he is available at the 9th pick. You could pick Rolle if he is not available and Smoot leaves. Or, indeed, you could trade down for more OL and DL picks...
We need a CENTER though!
