why's everybody drinking the Mike Williams koolaid?

Why does everyone think Mike Williams is so good? I remember there being questions last year about his speed and that maybe he should convert to TE. I think he will be a good reciever in the NFL, but I just don't see him developing into a star in this league. I think a lot of what he did in school was accomplished by playing against weak defenses in the PAC 10, just my opinion. Braylon Edwards played against top tier teams all four years at Michigan and with a true freshman QB. Troy Williamson is fast, big, and can jump. He played great in what is in my opinion the toughest conference in football, the SEC. I may be wrong but I can't see Mike Williams being the cure for our ills at the reciever position as I can Braylon or Williamson.

Luckily for us we don't have to make this decision, I have all the confidence in the world that Joe Gibbs knows a ball player when he sees one. Whoever he picks is the right pick for us.

Overall in 2003 while starting all 13 games, he had 95 catches for 1,314 yards (13.8 avg.) and 16 TDs, plus he gained 26 yards on 3 rushes (8.7 avg.) off of backwards passes, completed both of his pass attempts for 38 yards (including a 15-yard TD against Michigan in the Rose Bowl), blocked a field goal and made a tackle. He was sixth nationally in receptions (7.3, second in the Pac-10) and 10th in receiving yards (101.1, third in Pac-10).

Pretty convincing.

Not to mention the physical talent he is. At 6'5 he is taller than Moss, at 235 lbs. he is bigger than T.O.
Think Anquan Boldin or Antonio Gates.

Numbers in college don't mean much when transfering to the NFL. Danny Wuerffel was great in college, not good at all in the NFL. Mike Williams isn't the athlete that Moss, Gates, or Owens is.

Williams is pretty damned good. I think he will be a good pick-up at almost any draft spot. If he drops to the lower rounds, there is no denying that he will be a steal from somebody out there.

Say whatever you want but if he is available at the No.9 they would be morons not to take him.

I'm not saying he will drop to lower rounds, he will be a first round pick, I just don't think he should go before Braylon Edwards or Troy Williamson. Just my opinion, I hope I'm wrong and Mike Williams is the next Jerry Rice, as long as he doesn't play for Dallas.

Wow  . Im going to start paying attention to college football a bit more this coming season. I didn't know he was such a physical specimen. He'd create mismatches all day long. Ive been the main one saying we don't need a WR but I will admit that I'd think long and hard about taking him.

I've scouted Williams, he's going to be a pure stud in the NFL. Not just some dufas that's got some size - we're talking about a pure, Pro Bowl, GoTo, Clutch, you've gotta double cover him - and he'll still make plays
WR. I like him so much because he IS that good. No offense to anyone - I've seen it and think it all on my own little mind. Mike Williams is a super kid and a better football player... just my thirty seven cents :0)

Last year I wanted Sean Taylor in a Skins uniform. I'm glad I got my wish. This year I want Mike Williams. In FA, we should pick up a center and OG. If there is a DE in FA we should pick him up. That would fill the four holes we have. Some people say Williams isn't a fast runner but I believe his size will help him overpower any DBs covering him.

I am not sure how many of the people on this board were able to actually see Mike Williams play but he truely is a special player. Living on the West Coast, I get USC games seemingly every Saturday and the things he did while in the lineup were commonly unbelievable.

Williams completely overshadowed his fellow offensive teammates (including Keary Colbert - a second round pick last year that performed very well as a rookie for the Panthers). Williams was simply larger, faster, more athletic, higher jumper; he was truly at a higher level than any of his competition. I cannot remember watching a game of his that he did not have his way with.

It is true that he was fortunate enough to play with Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart; however, it was Leinart's first year starting and coverage was always shifted to his side of the field. Along those same lines, I am fully aware that the PAC-10 is known for defense; nonetheless, the conference in general produces some of the better DB's over the past few years. It may not be the most physical of conferences but it certainly has some speed. Just the fact that so many teams out west put the ball in the air so often forces the defences to be more adept at pass protection (though game stats may often not prove it).

Anyway, I would be thrilled to pick up Mike Williams in the draft. Certainly there are some concerns due to his unique situation but I was certainly more impressed watching him the two years he has played than seeing what Braylon Edwards has done for the past two. I may remember Williams dropping one ball over those years and routinely (about once/game) saw Edwards not making the simple catch. If we draft a WR, I either hope its in the mid to late rounds or its Williams in the first because compared to him I do not see any of the other WR's in the same class.

Justin, glad to have you on the board. Very good point about Colbert- who's not slouch.

My main concern is his speed. He isn't fast, he just seems a lot like Keyshawn in my opinion. After the combine I'll make my mind up about him, but the Redskins need more team speed and I just don't think he will provide it.

I think Williams would go up the middle and take the hits. This will allow for Coles, Jacobs and Thrash to run the deep outs.

I know that I am sounding a bit biased; however, I do not think that his speed will be an issue. Williams always showed a burst out of his cuts, ran very good routes as a true freshman and sophmore (he is still very young), and never appeared "slow" versus any competition. Not only can I remember numerous "bombs" that were completed to him he has the ability to make a 10 - 15 yard catch into a 40 + yard reception.

Secondly, I think that many times 40 times are misrepresntative. How is a two-tenths of a second difference over 40 yards going to make THAT much of a difference when you factor in the fact that it is in a straight line and without pads. Basically, with Williams as physical of a reciever as he is, he more than makes up those 0.2 seconds by getting off the line faster than true "burners" and being able to carry the weight of his pads more effectively. Anquan Boldin fell due to his 40 time but it has not effected his productivity by any means. If the only question that you have of him is his straight line, practice field, no defender infront of him, no pads on speed than I do not think you should worry about him. He is a special player.

USC is on in MD almost every week, too. They're on national tv all the time.

I'd rather have a receiver that can win the jump ball battle...his size, hands, and what i've seen him do, he'd win 90% of them. Jacobs and Coles are fast...i want someone that will adjust, jump over you, and catch the ball...

Thats cool and all, but Coles wouldn't need to jump. He'd just run right past you, catch the ball in stride, and run in for the TD.

umm...yeah i know, that's my point. we need a receiver that CAN adjust, jump and catch...why get another coles?

of course, it would have been nice to see coles run past a defender once or twice this year...

WIth coles' toe injury he hasn't been able to be much of a deep threat. But he has adjusted and he was actually our best possesion receiver last year. I think it would be AWESOME to add williams if he drops, and then pick up a deep threat in a later round. Either that or sign via free agency. Williams reminds me a lot of T.O., big, physical, can jump and go after the ball, and can turn 10 yard catches into TD's. I really hope he drops to us or we trade up to get him.

You mean for that one TD he scored all year

Last year he would have been a top three pick in the draft WITHOUT QUESTION. This draft is much weaker at the top then last year. You do the math...... and he is what???? Twenty years old.

I will take that with a cherry on top.
