When Clinton Portis joined the Washington Redskins from the Denver Broncos before this season, he wanted jersey No. 26, his number in Denver. During training camp, he agreed to pay safety Ifeanyi Ohalete $40,000 to give up the number.
Ohalete ended up with the Arizona Cardinals after being cut by the Redskins and Portis, who got a $50.5-million contract with the Redskins, never paid him the $40,000. Ohalete, who has filed a lawsuit against Portis, learned that sometimes it doesn't pay to give someone the shirt off your back. - AP

Portis needs to pay up. A deal is a deal. Your word is worth more than bickering over semantics. Portis looks stupid in all of this. $40K to him is like $10 to everyone else...and I know I'm not going to let my integrity get challenged over $10...

I agree. Clint should pay up and bury this issue. This horse is officially DEAD!

I thought I remember it was for 40K as well as visiting Portis house for some vacation time or something? Anyone remember this? My guess is there will be no friendly visits upcoming.
I thought it was also that he paid him 20K and still owed him 20K. Either way, he has to step up and do the right thing. Pay that man his money.

Portis shouldn't pay jack. The guy didn't make the team. Its a MOOT point.

I'd question your logic on that one. Unless is was spelled out that if Ohalete didn't make the team, that Portis wouldn't pay...the Portis needs to pay up. A verbal agreement is just as binding as a written one (in theory).
And do you really think they made a provision that if Ohalete didn't make the team, the deal was void? Of course not...no one expected Iffy to get cut and, besides, if Portis though that was probable...he would have just waited for him to get cut. Every valid contract has 6 elements (offer, acceptance, mutual assurance, capacity, consideration and legality)...and all elements were satisfied.
Conclusion: Legally Portis should pay up, Ethically Portis should pay up. There's guys in New York (Tony Soprano types) that rough up guys like Portis when they welch on what's owed. It's Portis that looks S-T-U-P-I-D in all of this.

So, if I bought your car and on the way home I crashed it...I could cancel the check and not pay you "jack"?
A deal is a deal. This rule goes back to the stone age.
Portis should pay up before he gets a boulder dropped on his dome piece.

Bad analogy.
However, if agreed to sell me your car, and gave it to me, then later it came to light that you don't actually own it, I certainly wouldn't pay you.
It wasn't Iffy's number to give!

How about this...
If I paid you 10 bucks to bang your mom, and she was horrible, would you give me my money back?

Maybe Clinton will go ask Randy Moss what to tell the reporters about the $20k. The response would prob be something to the extent of "You can tell Iffy ill give him his ****** money cuz $20K aint **** to me and ................................" Then we could have our own Moss personality to deal with. I gotta agree with the minority on this one. The guy got cut. It was no longer his number to give out. He got half he should be happy with that. Doesn't this make you wonder if the guys in Arizona wanna beat Iffy up for suing a fellow nfl player? After all what is 20K to an NFL player? Latrell Sprewell has to feed his kids! The money should go to him.

He owned the rights at the time of the deal.
Portis should pay up and then be done with it, he could have waited until the season started to see what numbers were available and save 40K

Iffy shouldn't have stunk it up with his bad attitude and got cut, then he might be 40,000 richer and Williams would have made him look good.

He was a vet and came into camp with the number.
If he didn't then why did Portis make a deal to pay him for it if it wasn't his

Good ! When you're done, you'll have twice as many hairs !
Don't laugh. You might need 'em in a couple of years if we don't get better as a team !!

Iffy should have gotten the entire $40k up front (not that I believe he had rights to the #)....why the hell would you put a multi-millionaire on the easy payment plan anyhow?

If i was brought into a company and i bought a red stapler from a coworker who had worked at the company for a while, told the co worker id pay him 4 dollars for the stapler, 2 this week and 2 next week and then he got fired on the weekend do i still owe him the 2 dollars? Or do I figure out why i need to spread a 4 dollar payment over 2 weeks?

"If they take my stapler they will be sorry, I will burn this place"
