The Core Redskins

Who exactly are these "core" Redskins we are always hearing about? I've tried to make my own list of who I think they are/should be. Interested to see who everyone else thinks should be or shouldn't be on this list.

Offense

QB Patrick Ramsey
RB Clinton Portis
HB Chris Cooley
LT Chris Samuels
RG Randy Thomas
RT Jon Jansen
WR Laveranues Coles

Defense

DT Cornelius Griffin
OLB Marcus Washington
MLB Antonio Pierce
OLB LaVar Arrington
CB Shawn Springs
CB Fred Smoot
FS Sean Taylor

This is just a preliminary list. Who do you think needs to be added to it? Do you think any of these guys shouldnt be there?

Brandon Noble needs to be added to that list. In an article I read recently Joe Bugel says that Noble is the kind of player Gibbs likes to build around. He has heart and courage and never stops. He needs to be on any list.

take "Rod Tidwell" off until we find out whether or not his "payday" is more important than his team...

and add Thrash... He has to be Gibbs' favorite player....

Ok who the heck is Rod Tidwell?? I agree on Thrash. And it may be a little early but that return guy Brown showed he could earn a spot on the list if he consistantly handles things like he did on Sunday.

"Show Me The Money" is "Rod Tidwell"

Mr. Samuels, Mr. Smoot, and Mr. Coles are all great cadidates for removal from that list....Smoot's leaving, Coles apparently can't catch a cold in a freezer, and Samuels seems to have forgotten he plays football-on Sundays-for the Redskins....
McCants or Jacobs would be good additions, along of course, with Thrash.

Great thread topic JPM. I actually think we Gibbs talks about "core" Redskins...he's actually only talking about 2 or 3 individuals on each side of the ball and a Special Teamer or two....and basically, what you've listed about is 7 out of 11 on each side of the ball... Also, if you look at past "core" Redskins...they were not necessarily the best players...just solid, worthy performers that showed up for work each and every day and set the tone for the team...

So here's my 2 cents:

"Core" Redskins on Offense:
Clinton Portis
Laverneous Coles
Jon Jansen

"Core" Redskins on Defense:
Lavar Arrington
Brandon Noble
Marcus Washington
CornGriff (my new nickname for him...hope it catches on)

"Core" Misc/Special Teams
Antonio Pierce
James Thrash

You guys will probably kill me on this for leaving off some players...but, keep in mind...a core is just that...a small central group that holds the whole thing together.

:hmm: he had 90 catches this season... he's only the third Redskin ever to have that many... :thump:

Blasphemy!!!! BTP....You had me at "take"

I like your list Diesel but I'd remove Coles and add Cooley. Jackson has nicknamed Griffin "Corny" all though I'm not sure he'd approve. LOL I've caught on to his nickname.

I'm cool with that...I was really hesitant w/Coles and Portis...so...revision: Cooley in/Coles out

Ok I should rephrase my question. Who on that list are you calling Tidwell. LOL I cannot believe BTP quoted a "girl" movie. LOL

I disagree with people saying Coles isn't a core Redskin. He is a consistently solid performer who plays through pain.

I really hope Smoot is back here next year. He is one of my favorite Redskins and theres no way we wouldve had the #1 Defense in the NFC without the coverage skills of him and Springs.

Noble is an interesting pick.

Another interesting note: 6 of the players I listed were not on the 2003 team: Taylor, Cooley, Washington, Griffin, Springs, and Portis.

Hopefully our #9 pick can lead to another "Core Redskin"

Why would you remove Coles? He had 90 catches on one foot this year... taking hit after hit across the middle.... and had to deal with Brunell?

tonto niños...

How is that a girl movie? It's got football in it!!!

:thump:

It also has mushy parts that overshadow the football.

I am just not good at narrowing down the core guys I guess. I want Cooley on there. Who would you remove? Portis?

While Portis did rack up over 1300 yards this year, I still question his devotion to his coaches and teammates. He's a wonderful talent but still comes across sometimes with a me-first type of attitude.

Obviously he will be a Redskin for many years to come, but I'd just like to be reassured that he has bought into Coach Gibbs' system and trusts that this team is progressing.

But again, he had a really good year and I guess I should just be thankful...beggers can't be choosers.

LOL Ok I'd like to see you say that to Noble's face. I think he's one of the toughest guys on that field. And you only said that to pick a fight.

As far as the Waterboy, that movie is definitely not a girl's movie. And all the football in that movie is fictional.

Closest person to being right so far is JPM36

"Core" Offense
Ramsey
Portis(NOT BETTS...IT WAS A FLUKE GOD DAMN!!!)
Cooley
Coles
Jansen
Thomas

"Core" Defense
Griffin
Arrington
Pierce
Washington
Smooooooot!!!!!!!!!!!!
Springs
Taylor!!!!!!!(future hall of famer)

"Core" Special Teams
James Thrash
Taylor Jacobs
Lemar Marshall

When it comes down to it Coach Gibbs will make the right decisions just have faith

i think some of these players will move up and become true core players replacing some of the players people think are core players now... it is going to be very interesting....

my vote is

Joe Salave
Ron Warner....

I really like these players... they hustle and seem to have drive....

That's the whole friggin' team. The only one you've left off is Ade Jimoh... Again...I stress the "core" players.

I agree with a lot of your comments. On defense, I would also add Matt Bowen.

So....

On Defense:

Griffin
Arrington
Washington
Bowen
Pierce

[I'm not sold on Smoot because he appears to be demanding top 5 money when he isn't even a top 10 CB. He'll be gone by next year because of that. Sean Taylor is too immature right now to be a "core Redskin". Perhaps next year.]

On Offense:

Ramsey
Thrash
Coles
Jansen
Cooley

[I'm not sold on Portis just yet. Yes, he's a talent...but "core Redskin"? I just dunno yet.]
