Fred Smoot To Be Franchised?

Although there is at least one coach on the Washington staff who does not want Fred Smoot back in 2005, the Redskins may designate the standout cornerback a franchise player if a contract extension cannot be reached.

I wonder what coach Lenny thinks doesn't want Smoot to come back.

Great shades of Bailey ! I don't want to be around Smootie if that comes to fruition, I'll tell you that !

I'll laugh if he takes the route that bailey took and get way too hyped up when he is traded. Then we'll all get to see him get burned by a bunch of no names

Smoot is waaaaaaayyyyy tougher than Bailey ever was. This is a blue collar worker we're talking about.
I'm thinking, "draft picks". You ?

Are you guys kidding me?

Franchise Smoot?

I love the guy and everything but you do understand that IF you franchise him you are AGREEING TO PAY HIM AN AVERAGE OF THE TOP 5 DB SALARIES IN THE LEAGUE -- right?

No way Freddie is worth that kind of coin... 6+ Million a year?

... and no way Smoot's one of the top 5 DB's in the league... no offense intended at all.

He thinks he is. C Bailey and Neon D. told him so... :)

I agree with Boss, Fred is a great player, but not worthy of the tag.

we will definitely franchise Smooty if it comes to that. It would only be 6 mil for one season. You know there are tons of teams who would give up picks for him. Good ones even. You gotta franchise a player like that to get draft picks....

Why would anyone else pay 6 M?

With all due respect to Freddie... why on earth would you give up two first round picks for him when if you needed one that badly... you'd probably just draft Antre Rolle with one f your picks and STILL have a pick and some cap money left?

I think Fred being franchised is a pipe dream. I don't think anyone would run the risk of not getting anything and being stuck holding the 6M+ bill.

It's not like we have cap space to burn.

I think we are all quick to jump on the idea, and maybe some media and Redskin's staff as well. The reason is because our defense was the shining star this year, and I for one am sick and tired of finding consistancy to only watch it wash away with free agency. I think if slapping him with that tag keeps our defense playing the way it did this year then it would be worth every penny it costs us, aside from Smoot's individual worth. Is there anyone else more worthy of the tag would be the question we need to ask.

... yeah... someone worth the money.

Our argument seems to be that Freddie is a 'core' guy.... that he is a team player... hard to make that same claim if he starts holding the Redskins ransom like Bailey did.

If Smoot truly wants to be a Redskin all of his career, then he'll sign a fair contract.

.... and that don't include no 6M+ to start IMO.

Smoot's package is likely to fall between the six-year, $30 million contract Springs signed with the Redskins and the deal signed by McAlister. .....

Baltimore's Chris McAlister, another top cornerback, signed a seven-year contract extension last month worth $55 million, including $17.5 million in bonuses

6 years $30 mil would put him in with the top 10 CBs in the league. I think thsts fair. If he wants more then he can get it somewhere eles.

We will NOT pay Smoot 5 mil a year..no way. He's a nice CB, a tough guy, a great team player but just not worth the money...

If we're going to sign someone for 5 mil, it will be a DE or DL free agent...

I'd let him go if that's what he wants...

If we could get him for a 10 mil signing bonus over a 5 year deal and yearly salaries of 500K, 750K, 1 mil, 1.5 mil & 2-3 mil...fine...I would not average more than 3 mil a year for him until later in the contract.

Why does Smoot play so poorly against Dallas. I like him and loved him as a 2nd round steal, we need to do everything we can to keep that entire defense together. But he shouldn't ask for too too much $$$.

Well, assuming Greg Williams stays at the helm I'm not really worried about it.

I agree with BH on this one. Franchising Smootmeister just isn't wise. He's not worthy of top-5 pay. He is marginally worth top-10 pay (although that is much closer). If he doesn't accept the Skins offer in the top-10 range, I say dump him and go after someone else.

Too bad...I think Smoot has a lot of heart. He just isn't a top-5 CB, though.

I wouldn't Franchise unless you wanted to trade him :( . Bad Idea sign him to a long term deal. 4-7 years.

Ugh. If we keep dropping people will we ever see consistancy from this team? We complain that it's not been a consistant coach but if we drop player like this when will there ever be a time when that is not an excuse? I'm not saying pay him an outragous amount, but if we need to pay him a little more and have consistancy on D then I'm not going to complain about it. Who else may be a cap casuality on Defense.
