A while back some doof over at NFL films was trying to come up with one of those catchy titles NFL Films always uses for team capsule films for one about the Cowboys. What they came up with was "America's Team" and since then those damn cowpukes have latched onto it like a pit bull on the mailman's butt and won't let go.

You can't just claim another team's nickname. If thats the case then why can't other offensive lines be called the hogs? Hey, how about this. Why don't you call your defense the steel curtain?

It's not a nickname, it's the name of a movie. It's like the Giants calling themselves Starsky & Hutch...

I'm not jealous... I'm just saying to claim that title is bold and for a 6-9 record... it's kind embrassing to America... yes we're 5-10... but we're not trying to represent America either

We never claimed that title. It was given to us by a writer/reporter with NFL Films in the 70's before doing a television peice on the Boys.
Most Cowboys players hated being called "America's Team". Though it was based on the success the franchise has had, it had alot more to do with the huge fanbase the Cowboys enjoy via MNF, Merchandising, and just overall exposure in general.

America's Team is kinda like Spider-Man..
It is our gift..

(A high title that we will never lose no matter how bad we are- hence 1-15)
...it is also our curse

(No matter how good or bad we are, people hate and want to beat the crap out of "America's Team")...especially Green Bay, they were the most pissed when we got that nickname. But it was based upon the fact that the Cowboys sold the most merchandise, and seemed to be the most popular team in the land. So it's not as if it was just a catchy stupid movie title. In 1977, it made perfect sense!!
and it still does

Awww, that's okay.
Somebody has to take them. Why not America ? After all, as it says on the Statue of Liberty...
"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The
wretched refuse of your teeming shore,
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
C'mon. That's
all about them Cowboys !

We never claimed that title. It was given to us by a writer/reporter with NFL Films in the 70's before doing a television peice on the Boys.
As I remember it, Tex Schramm (sp?) decided that "America's Team" would be the Cowboys' marketing catch. It was team advertising.
The immortal George Allen laid it down perfectly: The Washington Redskins represent the Nation's Capital. The Redskins are "America's Team", if any NFL team is.
Let's put it this way:
When I was a kid, we drove up North Capitol Street every Sunday to cross the 14th Street Bridge and see my grandfather in Alexandria. I'm sure that the big building on on left, just past Union Station, was the US Capitol.
I've also been to Texas, and the closest thing to a Capitol is a building in Austin. I don't think that Austin bulding represents the USA.

I couldn't agree more. "marketing", what a joke.

The Cowboys aren't "America's team". They used to be, when they were good. A lot of people are bandwagoners and like to follow the best team in the NFL. Back then, the Cowboys were the team to follow. They were "America's team". Not anymore though.
Right now "America's team" is supposedly the Patriots because all the bandwagoners jumped on the Patriots bandwagon because they're the best in the NFL and they produce year after year, like the Cowboys of the old days. "America's team" changes depending on whatever team is producing year after year.
Oh yeah and the Washington Redskins, in my eyes, are America's team because they are the wealthiest franchise in the nfl, meaning most sales, most fans, etc. However you wanna put the Billion dollar franchise baby.

Go check again, fool.
Whether 1-15 or 15-1, the Cowboys will always have that title.
Like stated before, it wasn't Tex Schramm's idea, but he damn sure capitalized on it, just like any smart businessman would. Don't go knocking Tex because he did things Allen could only dream about doing.
...the green eyed monster strikes again.

I can see why the Cowboys would be called "America's Team." I mean, it is the most valuable franchise in all of professional sports...
Oh, wait. No it isn't. The most valuable franchise in all of professional sports is based in D.C. and is owned by a Mr. Daniel Snyder.

They had a board, but then their Boss on the board, named Mirvin, was caught with drugs and the forum fell apart.
